Panthers promote QB (updated)

With Jimmy Clausen suffering a concussion last week, and only one other QB on the 53-man roster, the Panthers promoted QB Brian St. Pierre from the practice squad.

St. Pierre, who'll turn 31 in a week and a half, was brought in last Friday after QB Matt Moore was placed on injured reserve.

If Clausen isn't cleared, sixth-round rookie Tony Pike would be the starter by default, since he's the only other one available. This is St. Pierre's eighth year in the NFL, but he's only played in two games and thrown five passes.

The former fifth-round pick from Boston College has spent time with Arizona, Pittsburgh and Baltimore.

UPDATE: The Panthers will also promote G C.J. Davis from the practice squad, his agent says. No word yet on cuts.

UPDATE 2: The Panthers announced the promotion of St. Pierre and the release of RB Andre Brown, who was claimed off waivers last week.

They'll re-sign LB Sean Ware to the practice squad. He was cut last week to make room for St. Pierre.

Some body please ask Jerry Richardson "Why did he allowed this to happen"?

But with vaguely better grammar, please.

What about Armanti Edwards? I watched Michael Vick last night and I wondered why the Panthers passed when Vick was interested in coming to Charlotte. I know that Armanti Edwards is not Michael Vick, but would Michael Vick be "Michael Vick" if he had been put at wide receiver?

...and the Team Armanti silliness continues. Look, I'm sure he is a very nice guy -probably smart, and gifted with some leadership skills that will serve him well in life. But when it comes to being able and ready to play in the NFL (much less QB) Armanti Edwards is more like Ellen DeGeneres than he is Michael Vick. Assuming Clausen can't go, if Pike gets hurt then Edwards is our guy. Ray Lewis would push his head in! The OL would get him killed! They are not ready to block for some free-lance rook who rolls out of the pocket at the count of 2.

Ellen DeGeneres??? When She did QB a team that beat Michigan at home? And the Ravens QB Flacco? And set all types of FCS records? She sure is talented! Can't wait to see him on her show, they must have so much to talk about. I'll make sure I DVR it that day!

Give Armanti Edwards a chance. He surely can't do any worse. He may be a Vick in Doug Flutie's body. He is a natural and his sheer passion may be the spark this team needs.

This shows you how tough Jake really was. Wow, he survived 8 seasons behind this offensive line. It's never been more evident how tough and valuable Jake was to this team.

Play Armanti. Either two things will happen. Either he'll do well and continue to start, or he'll get driven into the ground into a bloody pulp by Ray Lewis. Either way, the Armanti bandwagon riders will stop posting about him starting forevermore.

The new Harris Teeter halftime contest will now consist of fans throwing footballs into shopping carts for a chance to play in a real NFL game. Winners get a $250 Harris Teeter gift card, a clipboard, and a meet and greet with Matt Moore.

You can't expect a backward dolt like Fox to recognize the potential of Edwards. We'll have to wait for another head coach to say out loud the guy has no potential as a receiver but at QB, maybe.

Armanti Edwards is NOT an NFL QB. We never should have traded up to get him. As to comparing him to Vick. Vick Played D1, first rd pick is 6ft 215lbs. Edwards somehow was picked 3rd rd(by an idiot of a GM) D2, 5'11" 182lbs. He is a gimmick QB. Put him out there and he may make the crowd go ohhhhh.... ahhhhhhhh once or twice but after that he'll get pile driven into the turf.

Hey C4 and the rest of you AE haters...have you even seen Armanti play QB? I'm sure the answer is NO, because if you had and you know anything about football, then you would know what he brings to the table is exactly what the other Panthers QB's and offense lacks...SPEED, ACCURACY, SUPERIOR DECISION MAKING SKILLS AND PERHAPS MOST IMPORTANTLY, HEART! Does he know all the plays? Of course not. Will he be perfect to begin with? Aboslutely not. But he will win if you give him a chance! If you watched last night's game, you saw an incredible performance from MV. You know why, because the Eagles coaches are smart enough to know how to utilize his gifts...the same type skills that Armanti possesses. They rolled Vick out 75% of the time making the defense choose...defend the pass or the scramble? It's tough to defend and that's what the Panthers could have if they would get their heads out of their...! Instead, they are satisfied to let slow, no-moblie QB's sit back and get sacked, picked and hurt! What are you people so afraid of?? Being wrong? It's obvious that Fox is! By the way, Armanti doesn't have to prove his ON THE FIELD leadership skills to you or anyone else. He's a proven himself as winner in the past and he will do so in the future AT QB given the chance!

they passed on VICK because CAROLINA has a problem w/ their quarterback being "of color"

Posted by: JeffDavidsonhater! | Nov 16, 2010 6:27:03 PM

Big Cat is smart.....he wants Andrew Luck too, and Jim Harbaugh, while keeping Ron Meeks as the assistant head coach and defensive co-ordinator. Smart JR, very smart!

I promise John Fox had nothing to do with the drafting of Edwards. He knew that Edwards belonged in the UFL.

I hear Ray Lewis is coming to town and he isn't taking any prisoners back with him.

Good luck to whoever is going to be the quarterback this weekend.

haha @ procton. hilarious.

the guy "allowed" this to happen so that they would be in a good position to win immediately after next year's supposed lockout. there's going to be a lot of teams with old guys under contract being owed a lot of money and a lot of young guys with no experience and we will have a young team with a full season's experience, high draft picks coming in and money to spend.

richardson played the cards perfectly yet the majority of his fanbase doesn't have the mental capacity to see the moves he's actually making. they can't see past tomorrow.

if we kept all the veterans and added a few more were we in the mix for a superbowl? no. we were 8-8 last year with those guys. we weren't one piece away. we weren't 2. and with fox in the last year of his deal, the timing was right. he did what needed doing. where he messed up was raising ticket prices (although it wasn't anything like what time warner cable and duke energy have done or tried to do in the same time frame) and not being more transparent or explain his motives to his fanbase. mostly because it would be a waste of time with the amount of idiots that are his fanbase.

these are the same people that were crying for a delhomme for cutler trade last year. or mad that we didn't make a play for a washed up WR.

think people think. i know its hard but atleast try.

I wish they would hurry and put in A. Edwards so everbody can see HOW MUCH HE SUCKS. give it a rest, he ain't worth a crap and is just another wasted draft pick like that idiot Jimmy Clausen. Edwards is better than Clausen but neither will make it in this league. We need real QB, and offensive coordinator, real coach, real fans. I love my Panthers and it sucks but I am telling you Edwards won't make it and is not the answer.

if Clausen can't go, there is a VERY good chance Armanti is our #2 and CAN play. That would be a huge step up for him...

but gah, I hope Clausen can play...

ps: anyone who has decided that Edwards and/or Clausen can't play in this league is a hopeless anti-homer and needs to go away. Both are rookies, both have multiple years left before we can really label them busts, at any position.
