Panthers sign QB; announce top three RBs are out

The Panthers signed a veteran quarterback to their practice squad, although Brian St. Pierre is not long on game experience.

St. Pierre, who played at Boston College, has appeared in two games and attempted five passes in seven NFL seasons. His previous stops were in Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Arizona.

Carolina waived linebacker Sean Ware from the practice squad to make room for St. Pierre.

“He’s a younger player that’s had some playing time (who) we’ve got some familiarity with on our staff,” Panthers coach John Fox said Friday. “It gives us a third quarterback in the building learning our offense.”

Younger player? St. Pierre turns 31 later this month.

“He’s not a 14-year vet,” said Fox.

Retired NFL QB Vinny Testaverde was 43 when the Panthers signed him in 2007.

In other (expected) news, Fox announced the top three tailbacks – DeAngelo Williams (foot), Jonathan Stewart (concussion) and Tyrell Sutton (ankle) – are out for Sunday’s game at Tampa Bay.

Defensive end Greg Hardy (concussion) also is out.

Second-year back Mike Goodson said this week he would be the starting tailback. The newly acquired tandem of Andre Brown and Josh Vaughan will be behind Goodson.

Cornerback Richard Marshall, held out Thursday due to an unspecified team decision, returned Friday and will play against the Bucs.

Brian St. Pierre....I feel so much better now!

Dang, I was hoping for a Manning brother.

I do not believe that this QB will get in b4 Edwards. That would be disheartening. It is now time for blitz's galore; screen passes and draws on off. Appalachian packages and more creativity on offense to get a win. Throw caution into the wind!

St P will fit in great. 2 of 5 passing in a 3 year career with a 40.9 passer rating.

Jerry Richardson needs to strap on his old leather helmet and take a few snaps so he can get JACKED UP the way he's jacked the fans this year.

Thank goodness, I was worried we weren't going to sign a solid quarterback all year. I feel better now he should fit in just fine with a 40% qb rating. Is there a more sad franchise in football this year than us????? I would say no. I'm just glad clausen isn't getting beat up at bars here in town.

the panthers need to get Edwards some snaps. Pike and Edwards are the only Panther QB with any history of winning games. Give intangables a try!

He WIIL get a chance to play QB before Edwards becuse St. Pierre is a QB was drafted as a QB. Edwards will go down as THE WORST draft pick in Panthers history.

I doubt that hew will be the worst draft... let's not forget DJ.

You mean THE Brian St. Pierre!

Posted by: panthersfan567 | Nov 12, 2010 1:57:31 PM

I still think you should give AE a chance but I have never heard more hype from a player that doesnt play. Shut up about AE he isn't ready to play unless its lenoir ryne. Please just drop it app fans I've started to actually hate your fanbase because of AE. You aren't real football

Posted by: tpnay | Nov 12, 2010 1:57:32 PM

Armanti will not be able to play QB this week because he has to make sure the other players are hydrated.

Posted by: Husky | Nov 12, 2010 2:05:55 PM

They signed him to the practice squad not the active roster so i assure you that AE will get in before a never played career backup

St Pierre's best days may be behind him, but he still has plenty in the tank. Plus he brings a wealth of knowledge to share with the young qbs. Should be a stabilizing factor in the locker room. Sews numbers on his own jersey. So many positives here.

I've gotta laugh to keep from crying.

Edwards isn't the worst draft pick in history....lets see, I'd put Dwayne Jarrett ahead of him...1 TD, 2DUI's. Rae Carruth has been in prison for some time. Bruce Nelson in 2003, don't think he ever played a down. Eric Shelton, ha ha. Combine him with LeFors in the 2005 draft, thank goodness for Thomas Davis or else that entire draft sucked, none of the players are here now. I've not heard a peep out of Edwards, no DUI's, no complaints, nothing. The trade up was insane, but that was just one of the nails in Fox's coffin.

Armanti is a better football player than Clausen.

thats a fact

Posted by: lolcats | Nov 12, 2010 2:10:51 PM

I think this guy might now Flutie

Posted by: sevorg | Nov 12, 2010 2:12:33 PM

Brian St. Pierre is also going to fill in as the limo driver for the team when players get too drunk to drive home. I also heard he can really do a number on the urinal trofts.

Posted by: tpnay | Nov 12, 2010 2:12:34 PM

Can Clauston play?

He has looked lost so far.

I wish him the best but he looks more comfortable throwing the ball away than throwing it down field.

Will he ever learn to play under the center. It scares him to death.

Open try-outs take place this coming Tuesday at 7:00am at the practice field. Be there to get your chance to start for an NFL team!!!

i think they're hoping lightning strikes twice here. almost all franchise quarterbacks come by way of the draft or are discovered in their first 2 seasons/training camps.

the kurt warner/jake delhomme/doug flutie route is a little less traveled.

i hope they give pike the ball and see what he's got for a few games and then do the same for edwards barring an impressive showing from pike.

quarterbacks are going to play bad in the beginning in most cases but you can still see the light at the end of the tunnel. clausen isn't even in the tunnel. moore's light isn't that bright but he atleast has one. he's capable but he's not going to be great. if you're trying to win a superbowl, you skip on him but he would be an ideal backup QB in this league. he's come in in that spot successfully in the past and has a lot that you would want in a backup but not a starter.

pike, then edwards, then maybe st. pierre, then assess, figure out if there is anything of worth that can be had for clausen in ways of late round draft picks and move on to the next on on to the next.

So finally the traveling sideshow that is THE Brian ST. PIERRE graces the city of Charlotte with his signing. I think we got the DNC in the bag for sure now. I also heard with the signing that the MLB is now looking to expand into the Charlotte market. O yeah with the signing hunger has officially ended in the Charlotte region.

a123louie and panthersfan567

Do you two morons have any better ideas? before you run your mouth lets analyze "real football"..how is 3 back to back nat'l championships (one of which where we beat the now praised Flacco) and 10 consecutive conference titles not qualify as "real football". The panthers are standing on one leg as a team so maybe AE is the best shot we have at moving the ball right now. St Pierre might be the worst QB ever drafted out of Boston College fits hand in hand with the managerial decisions going on here in Charlotte's locker room. On the other hand, Armanti Edwards has experience in winning and playing in big games. Granted he had a rough pre season, but his ability to run the football and also pose a pass threat (because he does have an arm) places him way above the rest that we have left, and maybe even some we had before the injury/suck bug landed in Bank of America stadium. I suggest your think your comments before completely making a fool of youselves and your football knowledge.

GO NEERS!! We need a W this weekend!!
