Status of Clausen still uncertain

Unlike the past couple of weeks, Panthers coach John Fox did not have a lot of news to announce Monday.

And no news is about as close as it gets to good news for the injury-ravaged and offensively challenged Panthers.

Fox said the team would not have updates until Tuesday at the earliest on the status of its three players recovering from concussions: starting QB Jimmy Clausen, RB Jonathan Stewart and WR Brandon LaFell.

Fox did not commit to starting Brian St. Pierre again if Clausen is not cleared to play this week at Cleveland, saying only the 30-year-old journeyman “would be a consideration.”

In the fourth quarter of a 37-13 loss to Baltimore, St. Pierre threw interceptions on consecutive passes that were returned for touchdowns to turn a 10-point game into a rout. It was the first NFL start in eight seasons for St. Pierre, who signed with the Panthers 10 days before the Baltimore game.

Not surprisingly, the 30-year-old St. Pierre was sore Monday – a day after he attempted 28 passes after throwing five passes in his previous seven seasons combined.

St. Pierre said he probably wouldn’t have been able to throw Monday if the Panthers had practiced. He said he has tenderness in his lat and shoulder area that developed last week and worsened during the game.

“I didn’t have a training camp, really. You try to stay in shape at home, but it’s not the same,” St. Pierre said. “You’re not getting the volume of throws that you would normally as a starting quarterback.”

Fox said the Panthers would be “on alert” for another QB if Clausen isn’t cleared, suggesting they would look outside the organization. But given the Panthers’ unwillingness to spend much money on free agents, don’t look for them to pony up the $150,000 transfer fee to bring in a UFL QB.

Poor Jerry Richardson. He is so misunderstood. He really wants to have a good team, he just wants it to come out of the thin air, not by hard work and dedication. And the fans?? Well who cares, right?!?!?!

Heres my question and I just want someone to answer it,cause i'm not trying to be smart here but as things stand we have the 1st overall pick, does anyone think we need to get locklear the QB? Does anyone think getting the DT from Alabama would be too high here? Thats only if things stand and theres a good chance it will the way this team is playing. Cause nowadays no team wants to trade up to be number one anymore so Richardson would be stuck to pay somebody and you wonder if Locklear is the guy, cause im not sure Clausen may or may not be the guy. I've seen Bradford play lights out this year and I've seen Mckoy play with what some would say even lesser WR talent and he's looking good out there. holla back.

Hello Joe and Darin,
Are you two ever going to actually ask the hard questions of Jerry Richardson or are you going to continue to be "yes men" to his organization?
You have a job, we trust you to at least try to do it. The readers want answers. We could care less if it means you no longer get entry to the free buffet, we want answers. I have a hint, he is not going to return your calls, you might have to (YIKES!!!) get out of the office and go to his home and camp out there until he gives you what you want.
The only questions is, do either of you have the stones to do it??
Thanks,
Average Fan

Jerry lives in Morrocroft a gated community. It would be hard to camp out there Dumbass.

Hi Jeff,
I guess you are one of the slow ones, so I will explain it a little for you.

It matters not where the guy lives. There are ways in there if a reporter wants the info. I am pretty sure that Woodward and Bernstein never asked pretty please.

Oh who am I kidding, you have no idea who those people are. Hope your mom dosen't catch you on the computer when you are supposed to be doing homework.

To Tman:

Before you post maybe you should learn the player's names. First of all it's Jake Locker not Locklear. It's also Colt McCoy not McKoy. Secondly, I don't know what the answer is at QB. The next few games will probably give us that answer. If Clausen improves, there's a good chance the job will be his to lose going into next year. If he sucks, I can't see how we wouldn't use the #1 pick on a QB. That QB would be Andrew Luck from Stanford not Locker. It also depends on who our next coach is. They're going to have the biggest say in what we do at QB.

Hey Tman, at least you got the name Bradford right so don't sweat it. But I agree with rcarlson85, I think it depends on who is coaching next year and what they feel is their need. Although I'm hoping we get an offensive coach this go round, and if thats the case you might have to get a QB cause your going to bring in your guy and Clausen may not be the best choice for the new coach, remember Matt leinart?

Wow how do any one us know if Clausen is or isn't the right QB for the new head coach? Funny how opinions changes after seeing him play after 4 fucking games.

It won't be long before a Luck,Locker, or Mallet is called a bust or worst pick even etc etc. Hey lets draft a QB for the next 5 years until they get it right?

Comparing Clausen to Matt L is beyond just stupid. If Luck was drafted by this team he would fail just like Clausen, should the new coach draft another QB then?

Posted by: lmfao | Nov 22, 2010 4:54:23 PM

YOU WANT TO BELIEVE THE PANTHERS WILL DRAFT A BETTER QB FOR THE FUTURE, BUT I DON'T BELIEVE IN THIS TEAM ANYMORE, I WAS SO SAD TO HEAR THE RAVENS HAVING FUN IN OUR STADIUM, JUST LIKE A HOME GAME..WE ARE THE WORST TEAM IN THE NFL AND I THOUGHT I WOULD NEVER HAVE TO SAY THAT.WOW..WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKE, I WOULD LOVE TO BE 8-8 NOW..

I actually think Mrs. Richardson is running this franchise. Have you seen the distant stare of Jerry's face when they show him in the Press Box. This is not a joke, I do not think the man is well. I think he is in the early stages of Alzheimers.

Posted by: Morris | Nov 22, 2010 5:54:52 PM

I would give St Pierre another shot. He did not do that bad for a short timer.

Anyone caught using the phrase "it is what it is" should immediately have 25 IQ points deducted.

You think cheap Jerry is really going to fork out the money for first round pick?

We will trade it for a couple of late round picks and pick up a few of APP States players who will never see the field.

Posted by: JokeoftheNFL | Nov 22, 2010 6:08:47 PM

Hey lmfao noone is compairing Clausen to Matt except the circumstance. Bring in a new coach and you bring in a whole new philosphy. Question? Did Weinke stay the starter for Fox? Not long, and at some point Peete wasn't the guy either and in comes Jake. And as for the 4 games your right...it is 4 games and do you think in between getting yanked in and yanked out helps a young QB how? Rather you like it or not its just the way the buisness goes and if you want to get mad get mad at your owner for getting us to this shallow place to ask the question.

Posted by: everybodyhatesrichardson | Nov 22, 2010 6:17:45 PM

If the Panthers have the number one pick (duh) and Luck comes out in 2011 they have to take him. Repeat, they have to take. Regardless of what Clausen does the rest of this season you do not pass on a guy who can be the centerpiece of your team for the next 12-14 years. Luck is like Bradford, Ryan, etc. As close to a sure thing as you get with a college QB.

You really think that Jake Locker is worth the #1 pick in the draft? Let's look at his stats compared to Clausen who you are already to give up on.

Locker
YEAR CMP ATT YDS CMP% YPA LNG TD INT SACK RAT
2007 155 328 2062 47.3 6.29 98 14 15 17 105.01
2008 50 93 512 53.8 5.51 48 1 0 10 103.55
2009 230 395 2800 58.2 7.09 51 21 11 28 129.75
2010 148 267 1746 55.4 6.54 57 14 7 16 122.42
Projected 178 320 2095 55.4 6.54 57 17 8 19 122.42

Clausen

YEAR CMP ATT YDS CMP% YPA LNG TD INT SACK RAT
2007 138 245 1254 56.3 5.12 44 7 6 35 103.85
2008 268 440 3172 60.9 7.21 69 25 17 21 132.49
2009 289 425 3722 68.0 8.76 88 28 4 24 161.43

Clausen played behind the worst offensive lines in the history of ND. They set consecutive years of the fewest rushing yards in the schools history and had the 1-2-3 most sacks in the years he played. His won loss record was not impressive but that was due to the defense he was constanly playing from behind and led many 4th qtr comebacks just to watch the defense let the other team drive down the field for a score. Also those numbers he put his senior year were with two torn ligaments in his plant toe.

I think we need to give the kid a chance at the very least Locker is nowhere near as good as Clausen and not worth a first round pick. Luck I think will be good but not a true franchise QB in my opinion.

It doesnt matter what QB the new coach wants. As long as Marty Hurney is the GM he is going to want his guys that he picked which means the new coach is stuck with Jimmy wether he likes it or not.

So now the Panthers are bringing in ANOTHER QB? Keith Null? Good God.
