Gross lone Panther in Pro Bowl

Carolina Panthers left tackle Jordan Gross was the team’s lone representative to the Pro Bowl, which was announced Tuesday night.

This marks his second appearance in the all-star game, following his 2008 call.

While the Panthers struggled to a 2-13 record, Gross bounced back well from last year’s broken leg, which was likely the only thing that kept him from the honor in 2009.

“Although this season has not gone the way anyone hoped it would, I’m honored to be selected to the Pro Bowl,” Gross said. “It’s been a long twelve months coming back from an major injury and to be selected to the Pro Bowl by my peers is such an honor. I feel very blessed.”

Last year, two Panthers were named (Julius Peppers and DeAngelo Williams), but two others went as alternates (Ryan Kalil and Jon Beason), so more could be added.

Here’s a look at their past representatives to the league’s all-star game:

2010 1 LT Jordan Gross.

2009 4 RB DeAngelo Williams, DE Julius Peppers, MLB Jon Beason, C Ryan Kalil.

2008 4 WR Steve Smith, Gross, Peppers, Beason.

2007 0 No players selected.

2006 3 Smith, Peppers, DT Kris Jenkins.

2005 4 QB Jake Delhomme, LG Mike Wahle, Smith, Peppers.

2004 4 WR Muhsin Muhammad, Peppers, LB Dan Morgan, LB Mark Fields (as an injury replacement).

2003 4 RB Stephen Davis, Jenkins, DE Mike Rucker, P Todd Sauerbrun.

2002 2 Jenkins (played as alternate), Sauerbrun.

2001 3 TE Wesley Walls, Sauerbrun, Smith (as a return specialist).

2000 1 ST Michael Bates.

1999 4 Bates, QB Steve Beuerlein, Muhammad, Walls.

1998 3 Bates, LB Kevin Greene, Walls.

1997 2 Bates, Walls.

1996 8 Bates, QB Kerry Collins (played as alternate), CB Eric Davis, Greene, K John Kasay, LB Lamar Lathon, LB Sam Mills, Walls.

1995 0 None.

Total 47

What can you do about WFNZ. It has become a JOKE! It is hard to listen to many of the fill in guest. Kilgo puts me to sleep. You try hard but man you are in the right business with the print media. Producers and board ops do NOT belong on the air. If you can pull Stout away from Chele long enough how about telling him to fix this before it is too late!

james anderson didn't make the pro bowl with the stats he put up? clay mathews, lance briggs, demarcus ware? are you freaking kidding me?

Posted by: mcram | Dec 28, 2010 7:42:34 PM

Charles Johnson deserved 2 go, better stats than Peppers and doing it with alot less talent around him! Maybe he'll make it as a reserve.

Posted by: bbonds | Dec 28, 2010 7:53:27 PM

nobody deserved to go

Posted by: joe cool | Dec 28, 2010 8:03:31 PM

jordan gross sucks he didnt deserve to go with all those holding and offsides penalties he's had.

Gurley,

I AGREE! But did you have to post three times?

Posted by: Hamilton | Dec 28, 2010 8:13:41 PM

If Gross is going to be a probowler he needs to start playing like one! He is the leader of the worst O line I have seen here EVER!

i really don't feel like gross was deserving this year. i don't know if anybody tracks penalty yards and i may be wrong but it really felt like he uncharacteristically jumped early and held A LOT this year.

and while he had a horrible quarterback back there, I can't tell you how many times on replays guys just abused gross 1 on 1. I mean we didn't even pass the ball that much and a lot of times we did, it was 3 step drop type stuff. I think he benefitted from the fact that in the NFC, the best left tackles are VERY young.

if anybody deserved it, it was kasay or charles johnson.

Gross played like trash>Pro Bowl? Maybe he brings the donuts. He was the Panthers worst o-lineman, Williams was better, by far. Gross missed blocks=Moore concussion and Moore season ending injury. How can this offense have a Pro-Bowl lineman at all?

" Williams was better Olinw by far".

Has he played in only 2-4 games, not all 15 soon to be 16 games as Gross? Premature to say he is the better OLine on this team.

Andre Gurode(who was worser than Kalil)and Shaun O'Hara( miss half the season) making the pro bowl is a joke. Chris Brown(Rams), Todd M(Falcons) Kalil(even though inconsistent)

James A had no chance of making the pro bowl over Clay, Ware, or Briggs.

Even if Peppers didn't make the Pro Bowl, Charles J wasn't going to make it over Osi, Tuck, John A.

Deangelo H making the pro bowl over Tramon W or Brent G is a joke.

How many holding and off sides penalties does he have? Can you look it up, bet he doesn't lead the league in them.

Charles Johnson might have more sacks than Peppers but he still isn't the better player. Johnson doesn't put fear into opposing offensive players and coaches the way Peppers does. He also doesn't make the players around him better the way Peppers does.

No Panthers deserved to go to the Pro Bowl this year. Gross should consider himself lucky to have made it. Really, him making it just shows what a joke the Pro Bowl is. Gross and Wharton were probably the biggest disappointments on the team. They were supposed to be the anchors of the O-line but both played like garbage.

Posted by: Nate | Dec 29, 2010 2:08:58 AM

I agree with you 100% Nate. Both Gross and Wharton were a disappointment, and so was Otah. I can't believe he milked a minor injury and surgery for so long. I bet if this was his last year on contract to where he would become a FA at the end of the season, he would have been back ready to play early in the season.

The Panthers whole OL stinks, Kalil too. Actually, the entire offense stinks. They could let each and every offensive player go and sign cheap FAs to replace them all and would probably end up with a more productive offense. No wonder Jerry cut so many players before the season started, he needs to cut some more turds loose.

What a Joke!!!!!!!!

Posted by: boydsgrigg | Dec 29, 2010 5:34:02 AM

I can guarantee he (Gross) doesn't have an offisdes penalty. Last time I checked, offensive players don't get called for offsides.

I doubt Clausen, Moore, St. Pierre, Pike, DeAngelo, Stewart, Goodson, Fiametta, Smith, LaFell, Gettis, King, Rosario or Fox voted for him.

Gross in the pro bowl...laughable! it just further supports my point that I keep bringing home that the national media and fans outside this state never! and I mean NEVER! watch panther games! yet they have no problem giving an opinion about our coaches, GM and players....give me a break

Posted by: Cheven | Dec 29, 2010 9:03:40 AM

Truth be told, we played much better late last year when he was hurt. Remember wharton kicked out to LT and Bernadu went in at LG.

We beat the Vikings at home, killed the Giants (setting up J. Stew for a record setting 210 yds rushing).

This team to me is better with out him on the field. He does nothing to help the chemistry of the O line.

Posted by: Chuck | Dec 29, 2010 9:53:03 AM

Gross never gets help on that left side. Most other tackles do. With all of the shuffling going on on the line its no wonder he had to go it alone. I don't like the false starts though. Seemed like once a game. Great player though. If you single him out and focus on him, you see a nasty player who really gets after his blocks. Sometimes a little too aggresive and maybe thats what leads to a few extra holds.

Excellent point Cheven!

Let me add though that much of that opinion may have actually originiated with this tabloid though. They may have worked themselves out of a job since there is now some murmurs of selling the franchise.

It's a joke CJ didn't make it. More sacks than both princess peppers and Matthews. And more tackles than princess peppers too.

Spare me this "put fear in opposing offenses" argument. That doesn't merit a pro bowl selection, affecting psyche. STATS do. CJ got hosed, but I'd much rather have him on the roster than that she-male Julie.
