Panthers place Pike on IR, promote QB Null

SEATTLE -- The Panthers just wrapped up their Friday practice at the University of Washington's Husky Stadium, and they had news as wel

The Panthers placed QB Tony Pike (shoulder) on injured reserve, and promoted QB Keith Null from the practice squad. Null will likely be the backup Sunday against the Seahawks.

Also, they left LG Travelle Wharton (toe) home to get rehab, thus declared him out.

RG Geoff Schwartz (back) made the trip and practiced after missing the previous two days. He's listed as questionable, along with CB Chris Gamble, QB Brian St.Pierre, RB Tyrell Sutton and S Marcus Hudson.
RB Mike Goodson made the trip and practiced after missing the last two days for personal reasons.

Pike and his shoulder (which game did he hurt it in?) reeks of a PR move to justify the horrible choice of Clausen. Wouldn't want Pike to have a chance to show what he can do but they'll trot out St. Pierre, Null, or anyone else to keep Pike from having a chance. This organization blows.

The QB's named in this article are awesome.

I bet Fox placed him on IR because there was no way he would start this season, promote Null, open up a practice squad spot. Just tuff the rest of the season out, we will get LUCKy in the draft.

Dear Charlotte,
Don't worry. I am on my way!
Best Wishes,
Andrew Luck

Wow. Might as well put Stew on IR too. He got a couple bruises from last week. Go ahead and throw FOX on the IR too cuz i think he suffered a concusion a few yrs back he never recovered from.

Marty Hurney, MAKE THE CALL 2 HARBAUGH NOW PLZ! Tell him to bring some Luck with him!

i dont see why everyone likes this Luck kid. He is not all that. I dont think he should even enter the draft this year. He still has a lot to prove. He plays like Eli Manning when he has pressure in his face he just throws it up and hopes for the best.

Posted by: c-boss | Dec 4, 2010 12:22:56 AM

The same Eli Manning who won a superbowl already. Luck has actually been more comparable to Peyton than Eli.

im gonna be so upset if the panthers dont re-sign james anderson, charles johnson, deangelo williams, ryan kalil, at least one of our tight ends (jeff king or dante rosario), and richard marshall. these guys deserve it and are playing well. if you're gonna go with a youth movement, these guys arent old. and when fox is gone, keep ron meeks, and our RB coach. take either andrew luck or marcell dareus in the draft. and i would REALLY like to see us pick up just one good free agent this off season. they did nothing but dump last off season, so they better make up for something this year. obviously with only 1 win this year, we're gonna need it

Hurney-a must hit the exit along with Fox for any success to be attained in the future. If Hurney-a is still calling the personnel shots, we are doomed.

Ok, I can't believe I'm saying this, but... with Moore and now Pike out, may as well try Armanti out as a qb if Clausen gets hurt again. Seriously, what the point any more? In fact, you may as well start him regardless. It obviously makes no difference to the team at this point. At least during the 2001 season it felt like the front office was still trying to win. Mr. Richardson, is this really the legacy you want to leave? Is it really working that well for the Tampa fan base? Do you really expect us to come back to the team with you leading the charge to lock out the players and fans? I suppose "Jerry giveth, and Jerry taketh away." Let's just hope the prodigal sons don't turn them into the LA Panthers.

Edwards will be on IR the minute he has any sign of a winter cold, he won't play.

I'm just wondering which random quarterback they'll sign next. Akili Smith?

Since when did Pike hurt his shoulder? Maybe he developed tendinitis carrying a clip board. Why not give this guy a chance to play. The Panthers look so amateurish this year with some of these player moves.

What a frigging joke! Lets go get and some joe off the street and start them instead of seeing what the QB's we DRAFTED may be able to do!! I have been understanding thus far but Fox is a horses a** to do this.

This season keeps getting more awesome by the day.

How many quarterbacks have we drafted or had into town in the Fox era. Jake could play at one time,Vinny could but was too old by then. Who else? Why do we keep wasting picks and money on QBs when we obviously know nothing about the position or how to think out of the format box we ascribe to. Joe Montana would have failed here because he could throw. Vick because he could scramble. Peyton because he can think. Our format is so predictable I saw them running it at the middle school around the block.

Did any of you morons ever stop and think maybe Pike hurt his shoulder in practice? He isnt starting anyway, he isnt going to be a savior this season, so why not get him off the roster & sign a player that they can maybe use as a back up? & the moron that said get rid of Hurney, well, youre just a complete moron.

@Pantherz1: do you really want a college coach (Harbaugh) in Carolina? Brian Schottenheimer has done great things with the offense in NYJ and is a much better candidate. JR is more likely to promote an up-and-coming coordinator than to hire a guy with no NFL coaching experience.

Posted by: catfandave | Dec 4, 2010 10:44:45 AM

Steve, are you retarded or just dumb? We had 1 qb up until this season with Fox. You cant count Testeverde, Carr, or any others that they had to pull off the street due to injuries. When you have an injury you have to replace them and what qb do you know of that is available, that is any good, after mid season? Think about that . dsng this is the most moronic fanbase in the nfl.

Posted by: Moronic Fanbase | Dec 4, 2010 10:45:12 AM

Moronic Fanbase, do you read the post or just look for the pictures? I said in the Fox era not this season. That includes the drafts, pickups, and guys we find helping old ladies across the street. If you set yourself up with good scouting, you don't find yourself in the position the panthers find themselves in this year. Some coaches can evaluate offensive talent, ours cannot. Perhaps Moronic Fanbase should include himpself in his ouwn criticism. HMMM! Probably difficult for perfection to see past his own glowing impression of himself but go ahead if it makes YOU feel better. But you do type fast.

It sucks to be a Panthers fan right now. The whole organization sucks from top to bottom.

Honestly, it is time to move Edwards up to the 2nd spot.

The hired hand of the week approach is getting older by the week. Give player development from within a chance while there is still a season to work with.

@catfandave Harbaugh is a former first round pick who played the game at a high level in both college AND the NFL. He won a passing title and was runner up MVP one year among some of his playing accolades. The guy knows football. He turned Stanford from NCAA dumpster divers into a good program in his 4th season as HC there, and he played in the nfl long enough to know how the game works in the big leagues aswell. IMO HE is gonna do good things for some team in the NFL very soon, and i for one hope it's us. But your probably right about JR hiring from within the league. I only hope our new HC is more innovative than the one on his way out.

I'm with C-boss, why is everyone so impressed with this Luck kid?We should be looking at getting Cam Newton too or either we trade down and collect draft picks!
