Richardson letter not required reading for Fox

Nothing too newsy around the Panthers’ practice Wednesday.

No players or coaches would ever say it, of course, but there’s a palpable sense that the end of the season can’t get here fast enough.

Carolina is 1-11. Two of the Panthers’ remaining four games are against the NFC’s best team (sorry Chicago fans, it’s Atlanta). The head coach is on his way out, and there’s a lockout looming after the season.

Not a whole lot of positive energy around Mint Street these days.

I asked John Fox about Jerry Richardson’s keep-the-faith letter that went out to PSL owners this week. Fox looked at me as if I’d asked the question in Mandarin Chinese.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Fox said.

He said it twice, in fact.

Fox had another gem when asked about the effort level in the second half at Seattle, when the Panthers were outscored 28-0 after leading 14-3 at the half.

“I don’t think our team’s results have been related to effort at all,” Fox said.

It wasn’t quite as biting as Fox’s “personnel department” comments, but it was a shot in the same direction.

Otherwise, left guard Travelle Wharton (turf toe) and CB Chris Gamble (hamstring) remained out. LBs Nic Harris (head) and Jon Beason (knee) and DT Ed Johnson (knee) did not practice, either.

Beason has been troubled by swelling on his knee, but has not missed any significant time.

How do you know John Fox is lying? His lips are moving right??? Idiot. Enjoy the last job you will ever have in the NFL, you loser.

Yeah. Spoken like one of life's true winners. Fox has more class in his finger than you will ever have jackweed.

it is what it is

That's reaching to say that Fox was taking a shot at the personnel department. I agree with him. The team's problem has not been a lack of effort. They just aren't good enough, and aren't coached well enough.

I was one of PSL owners who got a call back from the BigCat after an email We talked for 15 minutes. One mistake he made and it came out of his own mouth was the coaching staff. He figured with a staff needing to work for jobs next year, he'd get the best coaching around for a young team. He feels that did not happen and it is HIS mistake. He regrets not make a change. Interesting on what he shared on why the dump of older players, but it is true they could of helped some with educating rookies, but they would not of taken them to more then 8-8 like last year. So why not get new players in. I liked what I heard in person and respect that he called. He said "one thing you have learned from this is I (BigCat) take this serious and do care what my fans have to say. I will call you back".

A crazy idea:

1. Richardson knew Fox was a lame duck, so no lifeline, no veterans. In NC, you have to have a 1-year separation for a divorce, and I'd say Richardson and Fox are pretty separated by now. What a wasted season, but if it yields the 1st pick, might be worth it.

2. The 2003 Championship team was all out of gas, so cut the stragglers loose. (Hoov, Jake, others)

3. Why not lose all the games, and get the 1st pick? A franchise QB could make all the difference (like Roethlisberger, Eli Manning, and Sam Bradford, Luck might be just what the doctor ordered).

4. In all this, you MUST question Hurney. Trading the pick for pedestrian Everette Brown, the crazy trade for no-contribution Armanti Edwards, Jimmy Clausen who has fallen flat, and others. Hurney always seems to trade for a worse position. You MUST question this guy. There MUST be better than him.

Hurney - Armanti Edwards, Dwayne Jarrett, Keary Colbert, Keyshawn Johnson, Eric Shelton, Everette Brown passing on Anquan Boldin - things that make you go hmmmm.... Not every pick bad, but still...

One more thing -

These Black Cats need some LUCK!

Couldn't resist.

Stop picking on AE, I am not a ASU fan but I do know the guy has talent and has the qualities to be a good player. he should have been drafted as a third QB and trained for that. Everybody is an armchair QB yet you have never seen AE play in a real NFL game as a starter. Personally, I think he can be like MV of Philly, but we'll never know until we put him in there.

The problem this year is not Fox, it's JR and his stupidity of passing up veteran players. He didn't want Carolina to win this year, he got his wish.

@Ben - first Keyshawn Johnson, wasn't a draft pick. And at that time, he was a good pick up, he still had good ability to catch. And Steve Smith has said, 'Keyshawn was the one person who encouraged him to stop the show boating after he scored TD's'. And if you are going to list a few bad picks, don't forget all the good picks, where 70% of the people screamed, 'why did he pick that person.' And now Hurney looks like he made a good decision. I will list a few for you, DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart (everyone questioned why another RB), Mike Goodson, Ryan Kahli, Jon Beason (when they had signed Morgan to a new contract), James Anderson, Captain M.,just a few. The College Draft is a crap shoot every year, there a lot of players with a lot of hype, that never make it past the 1st year. This list was to long to mention, but at the top is WR's, QB's, and RB's. The Panthers need to trade down and get additional picks, rather then draft a QB with the 1st pick, that could flop and set them back another (5) years.

why doesnt everyone just shut their yap and let the year end how it ends. you all act like you could/would have done better given the situation.... let things play out and we'll see where we get. how about we send Hurney and Foxxy to your job and let them criticize you and your awful co-workers, managers, and job decisions? didn't think so. find something else to cry about... better yet, send your lame resumes to the NFL office and see who comes calling. the reason our town's fans are fair weather? you. simply, you.
what is that, you ask...? "we didnt ask to be nfl coaches."
good, then i'll come judge your life on the job, that is, if you have one. i didnt ask to work your job, so i should fit perfectly in your little "snow-globe life style."
grow up you bitter, terrible charlotte professional sports fans. how many Panthers' home games have you even been to in the past five seasons? Bobcats? Let me guess, you like baseball... Exactly.

that letter made good toilet paper

i don't mind Armanti Edwards but this weird fascination with him HAS to stop. The comparison of him to Michael Vick is absurd, Mike Vick played against Bowl Division talent at Va Tech, Edwards played mostly championship division talent. Edwards' arm is not nearly as strong as Vick's, and Edwards is only about 5'10" or so and is not close to the 200-pound mark, a good NFL qb needs some height for good downfield vision.

Did you see Edwards in preseason? He was not nearly as elusive as Vick is when playing against pro talent.

" Trading the pick for pedestrian Everette Brown, the crazy trade for no-contribution Armanti Edwards, Jimmy Clausen who has fallen flat, and others".

You do know they as well have gotten Mike G in part of trading a 1st rounder for Brown right? I guess not, getting 2 picks for the price for 1. You do know the 49ers had draft a LG in Mike I with the pick? Even if they had kept the 1st rounder, there's a 50/50 chance he select Clausen with the pick.
