Out of Luck: Star QB staying at Stanford

The Carolina Panthers got even more bad news Thursday, as if they needed it.

Stanford announced that QB Andrew Luck (above, with Stanford fans after the Orange Bowl) was staying in school, meaning he won't be the Panthers first pick in the upcoming draft.

Now their options are muddled. Tuesday, owner Jerry Richardson said the intent was to keep the pick, but that's when many within the building though Luck would leave school early and enter the draft.

If the Panthers stay at No. 1 now, their top choices could include Auburn QB Cam Newton, Georgia WR A.J. Green or perhaps Clemson DE Da'Quan Bowers. More to come.

Yea! Now focus on getting Clausen some o-line help and a beast of a DT!.

Oh, and AJ Green would be nice too!!!

Posted by: Panthers4Life | Jan 6, 2011 3:02:21 PM

well there goes our last hope for this team...a dollar store coaching hire, no QB, no chance to get one...anyone want to buy some PSLs cheap?

DO NOT GET CAM NEWTON!!!! The Heisman curse should be evidence enough not to get him. I'd go after another QB in the free agency and pick up Bowers, Green, or Fairley.

We are done. This division has three top QB's and we are still going to go the cheap route. Could be a long time before we are competitive

And Jimmy Clausen sighs a sigh of relief!

Nick Fairley, DT from Aubrun looks pretty good right about now. 6-4, 315 pounds, 4.9-40.

Without Luck in the draft the first pick will be impossible to trade. There isn't anyone in the draft that can help you like he could. Remeber also that the Panthers don't have their second round pick (#33 overall) in this years draft.

I would rather get Vince Young than Cam Newton (and I don't want Vince Young)

Posted by: Bunkdog | Jan 6, 2011 3:06:37 PM

Have faith! We can easily tank next season just like this one and still get to pick him!

Posted by: Baghead | Jan 6, 2011 3:07:35 PM

Im guessing God isn't a big Carolina Panther fan. But don't get me wrong, lets go get AJ Green and put some weapons around Clausen and see where we can go from here. I still think well struggle next season considering everyone else in this division has a proven QB. Richardson better re-sign D Williams now cause were going to need him.

Clausen sucks. I don't care if he had 5 pro bowlers blocking for him, he just doesnt have the "it" factor to be a winning QB in the NFL, and probably wont for a while. Hopefully Pike puts on 30 pounds so he can be able to take a hit and our new coach puts the best guy out there, not the guy making the most money.

Just move this joke of a team out of my state. I am so tired of being embarassed by them. Mr Richarson please comitt suicide you useless son of a bitch.

Trade down to the 5-10 range and pick up a 2nd rounder and take the Best Player Available, assuming it is a beast DT, CB, or WR. If we can't beat them with quality, let's at least get some quantity.

This sucks. The 2-14 season was tolerable when this was a race for Luck. With that gone, the pain is unbearable. He will come out next draft, star for someone else (Cardinals, perhaps?) and I will die a little each time he plays, knowing he should have been a Panther. Unbearable.

JR, please have another heart-attack. This time, I'm begging you, don't recover. Thanks for setting us back you crinkly faced bastard.

It is this year or next buddy.

Clausen will continue not to pull the trigger on throws, throw from a bad arm slot and a wind up that makes Oil Can Boyd blush. And when he does throw it, he will throw it into Jordan Gross's helmet. The guy sucks.

I would move down in the draft, accumulate additional draft picks for next year, get best player available. Get Vince Young for a year cheap, then have enough ammunition for next year to draft Andrew Luck next year. More than likely odds are that he will not be the #1 pick next year, I think the odds are totally against him staying #1 in 2012 draft, and he is going to lose a ton of money by putting off going pro. This year there was a good probability he would get paid 50-60 million, after the owners/players agreements are settled, the next draft picks will get considerably less. Huge, Huge mistake for Luck not going pro, he will eventually regret this decision...and he really better enjoy his days in college.

Impossible to see a light at the end of the tunnel with Clausen and Moore... Newton, Green and the rest of the class also seem hopeless. Why not trading No.1 pick for a legitimate NFL QB? (for example Kevin Kolb)

Posted by: Terry The Turk | Jan 6, 2011 3:16:54 PM

I was afraid this might happen. Maybe we should still try to trade the pick and get a lower first rounder if poss. and maybe a second rounder. We don't need to waste the pick on a defensive player...we need the help on offense. Maybe a free agent pick at QB is the answer (not V. Young either). Of course there are other college QB's available. What about Mallet or the kid from Va. Tech? Not sure either is worth a #1 pick though. The choice for new coach and offensive coordinator could and should have a lot to do with it.

With Luck not going pro, I still hope that Harbaugh moves to the NFL....that would really drop Lucks draft status next year.... because I just don't think Stanfords team will be as good with many of the Offensive Line guys graduating. Man that news really upsets me....

With Luck out of the draft, Carolina WILL trade the #1 pick.

Luck was supposed to be the 'most NFL-Ready' QB in this year's draft. Clausen was supposed to be the most 'Panther-Ready' QB in last year's draft due to the similar system he ran.

Picking any QB in the draft behind Luck in this year's draft would equate to 'rolling the dice' to find a QB better than Clausen, a QB who will still need to be developed because they won't be ready (or able) to carry the offense on their shoulders any better than Clausen could. Carolina won't gamble like that again - they will trade down, pick up another 2nd round pick at least, will look to pick up a top DE, DT, or CB, and will go after a Veteran QB to play and mentor Clausen next year.

Clausen will be the franchise QB, give him time.

Bulger time.

Posted by: Frieda's Boss | Jan 6, 2011 3:34:26 PM

who is going to trade for the number 1 pick now that luck isn't in it? Were dead stayed there now for sure...thanks Richardson for all you've done for us this year(sarcastic)
