Early thoughts on Newton

Obviously we'll have more on this later, but Auburn QB Cam Newton just finished up his media session, the most heavily attended and scrutinized of the combine so far.

Newton began by reading a statement, distancing himself from the "icon" comments made earlier in the week.

He took many questions about his issues at Florida and his father, admitted some mistakes, and generally came across as forthcoming. There were a few first-person references, but the kid has an undeniable star quality.

There were no references to the Panthers specifically, but he did mentioned meeting with the Dallas Cowboys last night.

We'll have more soon, but considering the flaming train-wreck Arkansas QB Ryan Mallett had put on moments earlier (avoiding all questions about rumors of drug use), Newton came out well.

The CAMolina Panthers bringing the pain!

Just seen the interview on nfl.com and Newton handle the questions pretty well to be honest. Hope he has a good combine, funny how Blaine G doesn't want to perform in the combine. Guess he is loving the hype up so bad, it doesn't matter if he has a good or bad combine, he know he will be the 1st Qb taken.

If Gabbert thinks he will be the first QB taken he is sorely mistaken. If he really wanted to prove he was the best he would have thrown here.

he brings a swagger this team needs! I think he is not the right pick but I love the attitude! he talks the talk can he walk the walk. Reminds me of deion sanders.

Come on Observer, it's called a third person reference. Cam did this or Cam did that! Did you guys not watch the actual press conference! After watching it live on NFL Network, I am totally sold he is NOT our pick!

The NFL has edited out his 3rd Person Reference, but he said it: not here!

I'm white and I really want Cam Newton. Swing for the bleachers Hurney. I think you got to look at it from Rivera's perspective. He basically only has time to swing and miss once on a QB. If it's a miss we will most likely be bottom dwellers and he will be canned quickly. If he hits a homerun it allows him the first young franchise qb we have ever had. I don't count jake. I just always think if you're picking first its due to bad qb play. Just playing the odds we won't pick first again next year. So if you think cam can be it, you go for it while you have the chance to pick first.

Don't trust rookies - go get Kolb.

The Panthers have to use their #1 pick to try and get a franchise quarterback. This would create the excitement needed to fire up our fan base and perhaps slow the exodus caused by a terrible year and a worse economy. 99.9% of the championship teams have a great QB.

This Newton is too good to be true so no way will we get him. 6'5". That is a dream QB. Some team will be lucky.

By the way Cam Newton did well in the NFL interview. Very confident and straight forward.

Kevin Kolb will be difficult for us to acquire. I'm for it if we can pull it off without giving them anything more than two of our most valued pieces of trading merchandise. If we do not get Kolb, I say Carolina strongly consider taking Cam Newton #1. He is a freak of nature running the ball and will be the most difficult QB to take down. He has the big arm, mobility, mid/high-release@6'6", and the winning attitude on the field.

I would like Newton, but not #1 overall? He is at best a 2-3yr project, he isn't a day 1 starter( as the rest of the Qb's this yr). As quick this fanbase like to "give up" on player after 4-7 games( as Clausen). Wouldn't be surprise the same happends to Newton after wanting him to jump on the Luck bandwagon.

Go get a veteran, we already have the youngest Qb roster with the fewest starts in the league. So why draft anoter one? Try to develop the Qb's already on this roster. Because if Newton doesn't lived up to the hype, he will be thrown under the bus.

Its Cam Newton Carolina. Like it or not get ready. If they don't pick him we will be the stupidest team in the NFL and the world will know it. Newton has the goods no one else has. The NFL world is watching Pick Newton he is the real thing. If not we suck!

So we want a guy who steals from teammates, refers to himself in the 3rd Person and cheats....You guys are flat out dreaming if you think Richardson will go for that!
