John Fox back in familiar position

INDIANAPOLIS

John Fox said having a high draft pick is great, except for the losing you have to do to acquire it.

Fox should know. The former Panthers coach suffered through the worst season of his two decades in the NFL when Carolina went 2-14 in 2010 in his ninth and final season.

Fox landed in Denver, where the Broncos own the No. 2 pick – right behind the Panthers – after going 4-12 last season in Josh McDaniel's swan song.

"I think other than the record part of it, you'd like to have the No. 1 pick. I think with the second pick, obviously, you're going to get a heck of a football player,” Fox said. “We're counting on that.”

Fox reminded reporters that when he arrived in Charlotte in 2002, the Panthers held the No. 2 pick after a 1-15 finish under George Seifert. The Panthers used it to select North Carolina defensive end Julius Peppers, a pick that turned out pretty well.

Fox said he has enjoyed working with John Elway, the Broncos' icon who re-joined the team as the executive vice president of football operations.

I obviously followed John as a player and competed against him on the wrong end probably, more than I liked. But he's all in. This isn't a PR move,” Fox said.

“He's burning the midnight oil, he's working hard, he's very willing to learn. This isn't rocket science. I don't think anyone's going to find the cure for cancer. ... Standing in the huddle and doing the things he did as a team leader and football player at the quarterback position, I think he understands what a football player looks like.”

Look guys...its over..he isn't our coach anymore. I pray to God that you aren't going to milk him like you did Jake when he left. Please, write about the current Panthers, not former Panthers!

Why are you still writing about John Fox? C'mon guys. Fox is a non-story now and you need to move to the lawn and garden column or something.

Exactly why is John Fox relevant to the Panthers organization anymore? Joe and Darin, use your vast journalism skills and find something of note about the Panthers to write about...please!!!

You uptight bitchy girls may not want to read about Fox next year, but I do. I want to read all the details about bland performances and learn nothing press conferences. I can't wait to see his act grow stale and tired in a market not known for patience.

I loved hearing about Jake's last gasp, one of the greatest I told you so moments in Panther history!
