Shockey signing with Panthers
The Panthers have found their tight end.
Jeremy Shockey, who had drawn interest from Carolina and the Miami Dolphins, announced on his Twitter feed Thursday he was headed to Charlotte. Shockey has agreed to a 1-year deal with the Panthers, according to a league source.
“Looks like I'm signing with Carolina. Time for the next chapter,” Shockey wrote. “This is a great opportunity for me, and I am excited to play football. Let's hope we all have the chance to play this season.”
Shockey, who made four Pro Bowls in his first six seasons with the Giants, will be reunited with his position coach at the University of Miami – Panthers offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski.
At his introductory press conference in January, new Panthers coach Ron Rivera said he wanted to employ one tight end rather than the committee approach used by John Fox last season. Rivera and Chudzinski worked for Norv Turner in San Diego, where the Chargers' passing offense featured a heavy dose of tight end Antonio Gates.
Shockey, 30, has struggled with injuries in recent years. He missed 10 games due to injury in three seasons with New Orleans, which released him last month.
Shockey posted career lows in receptions (41) and receiving yards (408) last season with the Saints.
Dante Rosario and Jeff King, the Panthers' top two tight ends, combined for 51 catches and 385 receiving yards in 2010.
The Panthers placed restricted free agent tenders on Rosario and King on Wednesday, but the tenders are not binding. In fact, the tenders are likely to be moot when a new collective bargaining agreement is in place.
Look for more on Shockey later today.

According to other sources its a 2 year contract...

I just hope this doesn't turn into one of those classic Panther signings of the late '90s - a veteran, big name, and beyond the time frame where he is able to play.
Speaking of signings, Robert Gallery is leaving the Raiders. Sign him. Pay him whatever he wants. Even though he has never played worthy of being the 2nd pick in the draft, he would, on the day of his signing, be the best left guard in Panthers history. Our 2010 O-line was the worst line ever assembled in the history of football. This unit is in much more dire of need of upgrade than QB or receiver.
But then again, this is the organization that re-signed one of those underperforming 2010 stiffs for $10 mill. I won't hold my breath...

To bad Gary B, Jeff K, or Dante R haven't gotten a chance to show their true potential when Fox was coach. Fox used his TEnds as blockers when they had the talent to at least to be solid.
I don't know how Shockley will get along with Clausen. Well at least we all know Clausen will check down alot, so he will produce here.

Hummm, we have no O-line, no DT, no kicker, no signed middle linebacker, no QB, no idea what we have at RB, no CB, yet we sign a 3rd TE. Yea, nice move.
If anyone thinks this coming year is going to be any different than the last one, you are delusional. We are the laughing stock of the NFL, and Richardson is the Court Jester!

Everyone else is reporting that it's a 2yr deal

@ J which your name is John always writing the same quote of the 2010 Oline being the worst ever assemble. How long how you been watching football?
This yrs Oline was bad, but not the worst in history. I can name many Oilnes who was much worse such as the Bears and Cardinals this yr. The 2000's Lions, Bills, 49ers etc etc.

Robert G is a bum, you would bash him as well if he was to have a bad yr. I guess whoever has a bad yr ends to be let go? Not giving them another chance to rebound to have a better season. Thank goodness you aren't the GM of the team, you probably would have let Beason walk into Free agency.

"no signed middle linebacker"
Beason contracts runs out after 2011.

At the end of the day, what can we expect from a team that goes 2-14 and has three out of 53 positions committed to the kicking game between Kasay, Lloyd and Baker?

No matter what the team does, someone will have to whine about something lol. As injury prone Shockley has been, I wanted to see if Dante R or Gary B can be that TEnds Ron R and Chud C wanted.

Jeremy Shockey...kind of reminds me of a deal we made with Atlanta a few years back for a certain defensive end that never made it on the field.

Word on the street is that we are about to sign an "inside the 20" punter, a second long snapper, and a third kicker that specializes in onside kicks. Keep doing us proud Marty!!!

"Coach Rivera, steee-rike one!"
I take it you don't like the signing lol.

Love the signing, Panthers haven't had a great do it all tight end, since Wesley Walls!!!

Shockey is excited about the possibility of being the east coast version of Antonio Gates.

What is wrong with you people? It's a start! Yeah, it's just one guy, and there other needs. Yet, it just one move. Give Hurney some credit. What the matter, does Shockey not fit the Charlotte image? So he was injured; please name me a current Panther who has not been injured? That's what I thought!
This gives Clausen another weapon in the middle of the field.
Today's the last day to perform any transactions (at least that I'm aware of), so appreciate it, you dopes! Yeah, like Jeff King and Dante Rosario are Pro-Bowlers, whether they got a chance or not.

This guy is always injured, bad choice

Shockey is your #1 TE, let King and Rosario go off into FA and Barnidge still under contract is your backup. Barnidge is the closest to a "do it all TE" the Panthers have on their roster.
Shockey could be a good stopgap to find their TE of the future.

OK people it's a good signing. Shockey isn't the long term solution he's only gonna be here to help the Panthers get the system down. Look for them to draft a young TE within the next 2 drafts.

I sure hope they keep Gary B, the guy is a freakish athelete, too bad he can't block worth a damn though. Great speed, solid route running, good hands.

The last aging tight end that we got from New Orleans didn't do too badly.
