5th round: WR Kealoha Pilares to Panthers

The Panthers went with a wide receiver in the fifth round of the draft, taking Hawaii's Kealoha Pilares (5-10, 205) with the 132nd pick.

Pilares, who grew up in Hawaii, caught 88 passes for 1,306 yards and 15 TDs for the Warriors and was a second-team all-WAC player last season.

He tore his PCL playing in the Hawaii Bowl, but recovered enough to go to the NFL combine in Indianapolis.

Another guy with a torn up knee? Are the Panthers attempting to corner the market?

Posted by: BarelyCareAnymore | Apr 30, 2011 2:10:03 PM

I like the pick

Posted by: Jimbo | Apr 30, 2011 2:13:16 PM

Thanks for letting me post, David.

A 5'9 receiver, that is a possession receiver with smaller hands than LaFell... I give up. The FO is a freaking joke

Posted by: Nate | Apr 30, 2011 2:19:44 PM

Just looked him up in some pre-draft rankings and it seems he was not projected to be drafted at all. Wow, another great value pick, Hurney!!
What a disaster! Can't imagine what they're thinking. Maybe they're purposely planning to tank the season?

Posted by: Wayne D | Apr 30, 2011 2:20:15 PM

look these haters good god.Let the kid put on a pear of cleats first.

Posted by: james | Apr 30, 2011 2:24:38 PM

Lmao they should have drafted Marcus cannon to address the offensive line, now he is a Patriots. Better hope the oline can stay healthy, the back up are horrible. Does this mean they are giving up on AE? If so talk about waisitng a 2nd round pick. If this draft is horrible in 2-3yrs, this should be the end for Hurney.

Posted by: Lol | Apr 30, 2011 2:24:58 PM

Cannon, Love and DJ Williams would be better picks.
House would've been better than a short CB that has a torn ACL that Hogan has. These scouts, this FO is a complete farce. I'm tired of mediocrity.

Look man none of you have done anything but pick up a magazine. You don't know anything. These guys haven't even gotten in a mini camp, let alone a preseason game.

Patience grasshoppers.....

Wow, why don't you guys cry a little more? "Wah, they didn't pick my man crush, I hate our FO!" Some of you guys put waaaayy too much stock in the pre-draft rankings. Have a little faith in the team scouting and a little less faith in the talking heads. There are guys every year that are off of everyone's radar and end up being great players. The sky is not falling, and unless you've done your homework on these guys as thoroughly as the Panthers (I mean way more than just googling them) then you shouldn't develop such a strong negative opinion so early. So far, each pick has addressed a perceived need on the team, so what's with all of the tears?

Another WR. What are your intentions concerning A. Edwards?

Posted by: Lewis | Apr 30, 2011 2:32:55 PM

The WR does not have any of the intangibles of a wide out. He's undersized. He had a slow 40 time. He has small hands which lead to an increased drop production. He wasn't even predicted to be drafted by anyone because he has too much going against him.

Posted by: Nate | Apr 30, 2011 2:34:11 PM

man i stopped looking at the draft a long time ago. I don't expect much out of most of these guys(except Newton) to do much for us. Look for next year's draft to get the weapons we need for Newton, especially since we gave away our 2nd pick this year.

Cmon guys! Are you gonna give any of our picks a chance. I live in Hawaii and have had season tickets for about 5 yrs. The kid can play, return punts, kicks, etc. I dont think they are giving up on Armanti, I think you can never have too many quick, young wideouts. This kid will suprise you, strong work ethic. You guys should just really pick a different team to follow. I would like to see how you guys do in a fantasy league and that's "fantasy".

Pilhares was converted from running back, and has a solid build at 5'10" and 199 lbs. Think Steve Smith only heavier. Ran two 4.42 40's after recovering from his PCL injury (yep, 4.42 with that build, bowling ball anyone?). Projected as a solid slot receiver. Runs over most DB's. Finished last year with very solid stats...88 receptions for 1,306 yards and 15 TD's. Stock is lower because of the injury, but if he is fully recovered is well worth the pick. I wouldn't worry about O-line depth just yet, really good rotational lineman can still be found in te later rounds, and you can be certain that Carolina will address the need.

If this guy and Hogan are Rivera's type of players that he thinks can help him win, it's easy to see why he's been passed over for 77 head coaching jobs. Between him and Hurley, they have a dream team of fail.

I've watched him play. Has true burst, elusiveness, separation, piles up YAC even tho he's not a straightline burner.

MUCH better than Salas, the other Hawaii guy who piled up numbers, got a lot more buzz.

What Davone Bess does for Miami, Pilares could do as much or more for Carolina.

When you measure ACTUAL productivity, Pilares production is off the charts.

That's why at least one reputable number-cruncher rated Pilares as the top "mega-sleeper" wideout in the draft, likely to be picked by "smarter" franchises, incl. Indianapolis, San Diego, New England. [ http://bit.ly/mjLiC2 ]

Stop watching guys. You cant handle it. Seriously, why pain yourselves. I cant wait until these guys start playing and winning. As bad as we were last year, a QB and original play calling could make a huge difference. Our offense could actually be really good pretty quick if these guys work hard. Also, the D will step it up I believe. Got a new DC from Philly that will play aggressive. I'm excited! If you guys are really fans, this is the time to be optimistic. You can't wait until we start winning, that's called bandwagon fans!

The amount of whining on here is incredible. So far we have used every pick to address a need. People need to get off their high horses and stop pretending like they know more than the coaches and scouts making these decisions. Support the process. Yes, not all of these picks are going to work out but when does that ever happen? The important thing is that every year a few of these picks do work out, and I for one am excited to see which of these guys turns out to be players.

Posted by: ND | Apr 30, 2011 2:56:00 PM

I love how all you idiots think you're some NFL Draft expert. You obviously watched a lot of film on these guys. You obviously interviewed them, watched them work out. You obviously know a lot that the Front Office doesnt. 90 percent of you guys on this site just sit here and bitch and moan. Don't like the team? Then stop spending money and go like another one. I'd rather have no fans than you horrible Sh*tty ones.
