Is there a QB worth a top-5 pick in draft?

WFNZ spend part of this morning's Mac Attack show talking about whether there is a quarterback in the NFL draft, Cam Newton or otherwise, worth a Top 5 pick. The show (the podcast is linked here) includes an interview with Panthers coach Ron Rivera, starting at the 33:34 minute mark.

Rivera told WFNZ he thinks Cam Newton is worth the No. 1 pick, but stopped short of saying the Panthers will take Newton. He said there are still eight players under consideration for the top pick.

Rivera said the team is still going through the process.

Do you agree with Rivera that Newton is worth the No. 1 pick?

I thought this article was about if any QB in this draft is worthy of a top 5 pick. How did it become is Newton worth the 1st pick?

Yes he is...if you are Washington. Trade this pick and grab some DTs to make our line dominant again!

Until Richardson is dead and gone it will not matter. We are the worst team in the league, remember??

Posted by: Cat nipped | Apr 8, 2011 10:55:30 AM

Short answer to both questions: NO.

Give me Cam over any other QB in the draft. The added bonus is that he will put butts in seats and generate a buzz for the franchise.

Would he be worth the top pick in most drafts? No. Is he worth the top pick in this draft? Most likely. This draft has no clear #1 pick, even to this moment when it is usually clear. The guy has so much potential (to boom OR bust), and to pick him would be a huge risk. At this stage of the game, while we lack a franchise QB, we need to take the chance to try and get OURS.

I think Cam will be a great QB for our Panthers. We won't see it until 2012 or 2013 but we need to start rebuilding this team. We can get a DT anytime.

Cam Newton is the guy the Panthers will select. Nobody will be willing to trade for the number 1 pick given the current CBA situation. Newton has too much upside for a QB needy team to pass up on him. he's the only player that is coming out in the foreseeable future that you can say this guy has the potential to revolutionize the QB position.

Posted by: T | Apr 8, 2011 11:12:30 AM

Newton has a great skill set and tremendous potential, however, he's a scrambling quarterback who played one great season from the shotgun. He's a project that will take a few years to develop.

If the Panthers draft him with the intent on playing him immediately then there is a very good chance they could end up with the number 1 pick for next season and would have to pass on Andrew Luck, or maybe they could draft another high profile QB for the third consecutive year.

The biggest tell on Newton is regarding his character. He recently told a publication that he wanted to be an entertainer and an icon. He is already envisioning himself capitalizing on his football prowess to bring attention to himself. He's planning to use his sport to make himself a star. In essence he's self absorbed. He's a guy who has shown himself to make bad choices, getting booted from UF for stealing a laptop computer, and selfish people will serve themselves first and blame everyone else for the failures.

Anyone remember Kerry Collins? The young strong armed quarterback who spent his spare time at the strip clubs. Is Charlotte really prepared to have "Willy Beamon" as the face of the franchise.

Without question Cam Newton is a special talent who should be considered as the top selection is this years draft, however, the Panthers should be prepared in understanding that it's a gamble and they'll be going all in on this guy. He could pay off huge just as easily bankrupt the organizations success for another 5 years.

The QB's in this draft are not top 10 talent. GO DT!! or trade down and get some more picks. You can always find talented QB's in later rounds.

Black, we haven't had a good DT in 5 years. Your "anytime" is a load of BS

Posted by: Nate | Apr 8, 2011 11:34:18 AM

Swag - The only people who profit from "buzz" and "butts in seats" are the owners (maybe you are one?, dunno). They already sell 90% of the seats before the season starts, ala PSLs. I'm more concerned, as many others should be, with them a building a quality team. Thats what I want for my 3 season tix worth...not "buzz". Who gives a %#@^ about that?

"He recently told a publication that he wanted to be an entertainer and an icon."

This has been vetted a thousand times over, but just for discussion sake - so what? One way of looking at this is that he won't get to fulfill that wish of being an icon if he's no good on the field. So he's supremely motivated to be great - which means, by extension, so will the rest of the team. As a QB your greatness will be a reflection of your team, you always have the ball in your hand...unlike, say a prima donna WR who is going raise hell if they don't get the ball regardless of what it means for the team. QB is probably the only position where such a desire could be a proper motivation cause to reach it, he's going to have to master his craft. Can't be a Jamarcus Russell and be great....that's been proven.

With a little patience, which a team will need with any of these draft class QB's, I think Locker will prove to be the most worthy of the draft.

A.J. Green

Posted by: mls3007 | Apr 8, 2011 12:03:40 PM

I think Cam should have said instead of the "icon and entertainer" line...he should have said..."I plan to work hard and be a good game managing QB. I want to work on my hand-offs and short passes to receivers short of the first down marker. I will work hard not to fumble or throw interceptions. I really just want to help the Panthers go at least 8-8, maybe 9-7 and get a wildcard birth to the playoffs and lose in the first round of the playoffs."

Then the Panther fans would have been happy...because in reality that is pretty much all they want.

Exactly, Mr. Football! If we want mediocrity, then just draft Gabbert or stick with Clausen (about the same). Cam is a risk, but if he turns out good, he could be Steve Young. You have to take a shot to be great!

Sorry. I meant "McFootball"

Posted by: scottinca | Apr 8, 2011 12:28:03 PM

I think it's only between three : CAM, Peterson and A J Green.

NO!! anybody that watch's football KNOWS that that's not an AUBURN alum/fan!..Cam ain't comin here MOVE ON!

I never understood why some fans rationale for drafting Newton is "he'll put butts in the seats"

WINS put butts in the seats. Sure, Newton will pack the house early on, but if he doesn't show something the excitement will fade quickly.

You go with the player that has the best chance to be something special...and that player is Patrick Peterson

Posted by: Bronx Mike | Apr 8, 2011 1:23:52 PM

pack73, when has putting butts in seats and generating buzz win any games? Panthers should take Darius or trade down. None of these qb's are worth it.

Posted by: STL Panther | Apr 8, 2011 1:30:24 PM

They said they had 8 players in mind from day 1. If they haven't narrowed that list down to at least 3 by now the coaches arent worth squat.

Posted by: Moronic Fanbase | Apr 8, 2011 1:59:22 PM

It will be Cam Newton that has the biggest impact out of this draft...so yes. He is worth #1.
