Panthers pick Newton

With the first pick in the 2011 NFL draft, the Panthers selected … the controversial Heisman Trophy winner they hope will lead them out of the darkness.

The Panthers ended months of hype and public debate Thursday night by picking Auburn quarterback Cam Newton No. 1 on the first night of the draft at New York's Radio City Music Hall.

Newton won the Heisman and a national championship in his only season at Auburn. But he endured an NCAA investigation looking into a pay-for-play scheme that the NCAA later determined Cecil Newton orchestrated without his son's knowledge.

Newton also was arrested at Florida and faced allegations that he left the Gators' program after multiple instances of academic fraud.

But the Panthers checked out Newton's background extensively and were satisfied with what they learned.

Newton, 6-5 and 248 pounds, threw for 2,854 yards and ran for 1,473 yards at Auburn last season after transferring from Blinn Junior College in Texas. He has won national titles for each of the last two teams he played for.

we are officially on the way to having a QB with rare talent, size, speed, arm strength. Gald the Panthers had the nerve to dare to be great.

This could potentially be a great pick. I see him being a Donovan McNabb player in the NFL. Not sure why he hasn't gotten that comparison more.

Richardson pushed ahead of the line to get a new heart and let some poor person die as a result....guess what Jerry...you'll die before your beloved team ever breaks .500 again...serves you right you greedy no good jerk!

Newton will be an inmate at CharMeck jail within 365 days...book it. He has no morals, and will pay for hiding behind a religious cloak and lining his pockets with mammon.

This is a brilliant pick. Risky? Definitely. But a risk worth taking. Newton has that indefinable quality that separates superior athletes from the rest of the pack. It is an attitude of WINNING.

With the new QB coach and some additional good picks the Panthers may surprise a lot of folks in the not too distant future.

He won't have to worry about winning a championship for us in his first year. We'll have to beat the Cardinals the first game of the season to 1 - 15.

thats why they need to sign McNabb to mentor the kid

We can change the pick. Maybe somebody down the line drafts somebody we really need and a trade is made.

Why does no one remember that Charlie Casserly in Houston was right. When you're this bad, you pick an anchor, not a project or even a skill position player. hate this pick, hate it. And I sincerely hope I'm wrong.

Anyway, it's not like we traded away picks to get an undersized d lineman and a project QB/WR...oh wait...

This Team is Stupid Now who Mentor him and are you going to cut Jimmy after 1 year Like I said this Front Office is Stupid

Posted by: HUH!!! | Apr 28, 2011 8:28:39 PM

Give him a chance? This guy will be rushed on the field to early because the panthers sux. Then he'll be crucified for all the losses. You all have no clue. We needed a dynamic football that won't take years to develop, any of the other 3 would have been a better choice. PANTHERS BLOW IT AGAIN.

You will see the fake fans from the real ones by how negative they post. No faith in the team or the new coaching staff. Just the same ole same ole.

Now grab mcnabb to mentor

Congrats to Newton, wish you the best throughout your career here.

So what will happend with Clausen? Hurney again waist a 2nd round pick, could have had an impact player who would be with the team more than 1 season. Hopefully a team( west coast offense) will develop Clausen the right way, sure didn't happend here.

Plenty of empty blue seats for Jerry to stare at in his hateful senility. Hopefully blackouts on tv so we can watch some real NFL football for a change.

The Panthers pick of Cam Newton will set this team back for years to come.He has shown time and time again that he has absoloutely no morals. I wonder how much the Panthers had to pay his dad just to pick him!!

"Now grab mcnabb to mentor"

McNabb will be paid $15 million this yr if he isn't traded. The Redskins aren't going to release him, they will trade him to the Vikings when they are allow to. McNabb is at the point of his career where he should contend for a title, not come to a rebuilding team.

Posted by: jerome | Apr 28, 2011 8:34:22 PM

I Wonder How cam fan will be if the Panthers finish with the 2nd or even 1st pick in Next year draft. This is a blown pick Hurney wll be gone next year and now I know why no other team hired Rivera hes like John fox he doesnt know talent just hype poor poor Panthers the Other teams know this organization has no clue how to build a team..... A winning 1

Let the Cam Newton era begin...I love it...All you haters...No need to keep flap'en you gums...We don't need you or want your support...Let's Go Cam...God Bless you...Proud of you....(Hope'en I can get a better seat since all the haters will be gone...How sweet it is)

How does marty hurney and the rest of their scouts keep their jobs? Doesn't anyone in that draft room have the BALLS to stand up to Hurney and tell him that he is wrong!! Lessons are repeated until Learned! The panther obviously haven't learned their lesson.
