Twitter poll: Panthers fans cool with Cam

Auburn QB Cam Newton has been a polarizing figure in the pre-draft process, more so than any player this year.

But an admittedly random and unscientific twitter poll shows that a solid majority of Panthers fans who are about to go to lunch seem comfortable with the idea of his going first overall.

For one hour (11 a.m.-noon), we took yes or no votes on twitter (@daringantt), and of the 154 replies, 90 of them were cool with the idea of Newton as the first pick (58.4 percent).

What does it mean? Who knows -- other than a lot of you would rather talk football than work.

For a guy who inspires some fairly vitriolic responses, I didn't expect a nearly 17-point swing in the polls.

Maybe it doesn't mean a thing. And maybe we'll do a Blaine Gabbert poll soon too, although honestly I'm not expecting as many responses on either side for that one.

Or maybe the people who voted yes were worried if they didn't Warren Moon would call them a racist.

Now that was just down right racist^

Posted by: panthersfan | Apr 4, 2011 1:03:22 PM

And why would people be worried about Warren Moon anyways? What's he gonna do? I honestly would fret if Cam Newton came to Carolina really. Yea, he's got questions, but questions are meant to be answered. Maybe not the way we see it, but at least their answered...

Posted by: panthersfan | Apr 4, 2011 1:05:12 PM

wouldn't*

Posted by: panthersfan | Apr 4, 2011 1:05:33 PM

The title is a little misleading. Less than 6 in 10 are cool with Cam. Had it been close to 90% then yeah, but less than sixty percent? I'd say that's mixed at best.

NO... Don't draft this guy. He will be a huge headache an bust. Please tell me these rumors are simply to drum up trade interest.

Posted by: bjiggy2 | Apr 4, 2011 1:13:19 PM

II don't care about polls, Warren Moon,or anythnig else. I just know Cam will not be a quality NFL QB. This guy will make Ryan Leaf look like Peyton Manning. People who continue to claim racism are just ignoring this guys past. I judge his actions not the color of his skin and his actions are a reason for major concerns. I am begging Marty Hurney run don't walk as far away from this guy as possible.

Posted by: Jerry | Apr 4, 2011 1:15:12 PM

I love how so many super smart people "know" that Cam will be a bust. How do you "know" this? No one, including the people who actually get paid for their football knowledge, "knows" if anyone will be a bust or not.

Maybe you could speak less about what you think you know, and more about how you feel. Maybe you feel like Cam will be a bust, maybe you feel like Gabbert is your personal hero, maybe you feel like a Bucs fan.

If only you felt confident about our new coaching staff...then maybe you would trust them to make the football decisions. Until then, enjoy looking really intelligent with all that you "know" and I'll be laughing on draft day thinking about how angry you guys are that Cam was drafted by the Panthers.

Comparing Newton to Ryan Leaf is silly. Leaf was a alcoholic, had no work ethic, no leadership. At least Cam N has leaderships skills, along a solid work ethic to better his game. Finally isn't alcoholic. Everyone makes mistakes, nobodies perfect.

I like Newton as a person( even though I never met the guy), but I wouldn't draft him #1 overall. Especially how he will need a yr or 2 to sit and learn. In which the Panthers doesn't have the luxury to sit him, so he would play rightaway.

With no training camp/ota's, what impact will he will? They can't negoitate contracts, can't contact coaches. Finally won't be given a playbook.

If the Panther's make this choice, it could be the worst move they've ever made in the draft. This kid is bad news and even without all the off the field questions, it's a gamble to think he's good enough to warrant a #1 pick. For a team that's trying to rebuild, we don't need this kind of person in our locker room. He reminds me of a T.O. type, but just not as talented.

For those of you wondering, yes I'm white, yes he's black, and no, those two facts put together don't make me a racist.

I think that Green would be the best pick for the Panthers at this stage, or maybe one of the D-line players. Just not Newton.

Cam Newton is the Reggie Bush of QBs. Beware of the hype. He will be serviceable at QB but not a top franchise QB. I hope the Panthers can trade out of the top spot and pick up a couple of good picks. If they can't trade out they should go with the best DT on their board. Then trade for Kolb when the CBA is in place.

Its clear to me that there are many posters here who are smarter than all the NFL coaches and GM's. It is clear that most of the posters here are certain that Cam Newton is horrible and will be worst thing to happen to the panthers -- even worse than Rae Caruth. I cant imagine why Jerry Richardson and 11 other teams havent gotten all you guys to work for them. Why would 12 teams schedule personal workouts/visits with Newton?? if they only had your knowlegde, wisdom, and NFL insight none of these teams would have wasted their time with all that. If only Newton hated his mom (like Drew Brees) or exposed himself to a female (Peyton Manning) or instead of flashing his "fake" smile -- never smiled (Tom Brady) or had questionable sexual assaults (Big Ben) -- then he would be very likeable. Obama reads every word off a teleprompter yet Newton seems "scripted"??? Knows where the camers are? Fake Smile...i guess he cant be a QB in the NFL but he has the personality traits to be a President or Senator....

so what are the alternataives to picking Newton? everyone says get Green, Dareus, or Patrick Petersen. so what to do at QB? Oh yeah, we'll pick up a veteran in free agency. Just which veteran? Carson Palmer? He wants to play out west and if Cincy doesnt trade him he quits -- far from a sure thing. Kevin Kolb? many teams want kevin Kolb...are we sure to be able to outbid them with our available trade material? Donavan McNabb? Really? If the Panthers had a second round pick then they might be able to get Ponder or Locker maybe and then the fans would not expect anything from them so they could bust and no one would care. Maybe the Panthers should pick Randall Cobb from KY and use him, Smith, and DeAngelo (if we can keep him) or Stewart as wildcat backs.

Posted by: McFootball | Apr 4, 2011 3:10:05 PM

I don't see any other way for the Panthers to make a good move other than Cam at QB, not their fault they only had second round pick last year and got Jimmy. And if they did pick A.J. Green or etc. who would be able to throw the ball to him, we have Steve Smith and you see how many receptions the top WR had last season???Some of you don't want to draft Cam at number 1?? Usually when people's statements don't make sense, they don't know the person or his family, and make very prudent remarks about his ability or his character, black people have no choice but feel it's racist b/c there's no other reason for it is all. But like they say nobody is talking about Blaine Gabbert's drunken bar brawl are they?

Posted by: Big Money | Apr 4, 2011 3:22:48 PM

" But like they say nobody is talking about Blaine Gabbert's drunken bar brawl are they?"

Did you actually read the article?

"A police report says the players and the others involved likely had been drinking, but no one was ticketed or arrested."

Furthermore, Gabbert's role in the incident was not discussed

Scam Newton will not be picked at #1 by the Panthers, nor will any other QB. Hurney & Co. are guaranteed to trade down, and, given their M.O., will probably get swindled in the process. Bank on it.

Posted by: JR | Apr 4, 2011 4:11:37 PM

No I think he will bust and I still have faith in clausen I mean look what Peyton did his rookie year IM NOT SAYING HE'S THE NEXT PEYTON but I think now that he's played in the NFL he can only get better and if we can bring in a veteran QB that would help even more I want to see the panthers take Darius or trade down

Another article by Gantt trying to sell Newton to the Panther fan-base. I wonder what Gantt stands to gain if the Panthers pick Newton. He should get paid more than Newton's agent considering Gantt has tried to sell Newton harder than Newton's agent. I think it's a BIG mistake to trust in Gantt with the Panthers 1st pick.

Posted by: Out of town Panther fan | Apr 4, 2011 4:17:12 PM

Gantt is in love with Newton now, but if he doesn't produce. He will be the first of many so called Newton supporters to throw him under the bus. Countdown until Newton is throw under the bus and the Luck fans popping out of nowhere asking for him. It will never end.

Posted by: mark j | Apr 4, 2011 4:29:28 PM

Man you guys are crazy. I'm not saying Newton will be good, but I'm not saying of all things he's a bust either. Come on now, lets think rational. He does have tremendous upside, but he does have questions about character.
Rationally, do you guys really think with Ron Rivera as head coach this guy will provide problems or any other QB for that fact? Trust me if Rivera decided to draft Cam or even Gabbert, this means Rivera is comfortable and can mold these QB's STOP with the bust crap, that's just ignorant, really.

Posted by: panthersfan | Apr 4, 2011 5:08:44 PM

If any player is a bust it's due to coaching. When coaches set examples for their players, players follow. Or well, lack-there-of in case of last years Fox Clausen ordeal.

Posted by: panthersfan | Apr 4, 2011 5:10:45 PM

Not looking good for picking up a free agent QB. None of the QB's this year will contribute. Trade back, pick up a 2nd rounder and snag Locker.

if he was white they would be calling him the next elway!

Posted by: joe cool | Apr 4, 2011 5:52:24 PM

Why not put a poll on Charlotte Observer (for more than an hour) and see how many people say no.....I find it odd that a poll was put on Twitter for an hour, and not on Charlotte Observer.

Posted by: CarPanFan1 | Apr 4, 2011 6:17:29 PM

Hey "joe cool" you're a complete fool!!

If Cam was white he wouldn't be now talked about by media and fans about being the #1 pick in the draft. Tim Tebow had just as good of numbers in college, he won a championship too and the Heisman, he could also run, and Tebow did it on the national level for more than 1 year. Tebow also has an outstanding character, not a thief, cheat, etc..and nobody talked about him being the 1st pick, most stated he wouldn't even be a 1st round pick.
