Shockey: 'No games will be missed'

Caught up with Panthers first-year TE Jeremy Shockey this week for a story that will appear in Sunday's editions.

Shockey's had an eventful offseason. He was released by the Saints in February, signed with the Panthers about a week before the lockout started, and recently returned from Great Britain, where he competed in an adventure race in the Scottish Highlands and vacationed in Ireland.

Shockey said the 100-mile race -- he was part of a four-man team that included three endurance runners from Texas -- was a unique challenge. Shockey did some longer runs to prepare for the 2-day race, but skipped the mountain-climbing portion of the event.

Shockey is back training at home in Miami, where he works out with a number of former University of Miami players. He said he's seen more results from his offseason program this year than he did during the three years he stayed in New Orleans during the winter to work out.

Shockey won't make it to Charlotte next week for the start of the informal workouts that Panthers' offensive linemen Jordan Gross and Travelle Wharton are organizing. But he plans to be there for at least some of the seven scheduled sessions at Charlotte Christian.

Shockey understands the importance of getting familiar with his new teammates. He already is well-versed in the system of Panthers offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski, who was Shockey's position coach and offensive coordinator at Miami.

"It's really important for this lockout to end so we can start installation," said Shockey, who made four Pro Bowls in six seasons with the Giants. "But again, it's not such a complex offense like coming from New York to the New Orleans Saints. Sean Payton's offense is very complex."

Shockey said "a lot of people are panicking" about the work stoppage resulting in lost games. But he's convinced a deal will get done before any games are scratched.

"Both sides want a deal. They want a football season. I know the players want a football season. I know the owners want a football season," Shockey said. "We'll come to an agreement. There's not a doubt in mind that no games will be missed at all."

Shockey, 30, was diplomatic on the Panthers' quarterback situation. He said he's spoken to both Cam Newton and Jimmy Clausen on the phone, and expects a good competition.

"I know (Newton) is ready to compete with Jimmy," Shockey said. "I know Jimmy's a competitive person, as well."

Much more from Shockey on Sunday.

Shockey is just another washed up injured greedy union scumbager living in his own little fantazy world and clueless as usual.

Owners are pizzed as hell and want these scalawags all axed who will clearly do nothing but continue to create but problems.

These spoiled rotten brat thugz play part time 4 mos a yr 16 reg season games 3 hrs each 1 day a week on Sundays. The 15 minute quarters or 1 hour is furthur broken down to an average of 50 plays per game at 8 seconds each or 7 minutes of real live play time between whistles. All this for mega millions each? Please.

One million a year is all any pro sport athlete is ever worth. Time to revamp.
MLB plays 162 games, NBA plays 82 games and NFL plays 16 games. What a joke.

Force the "new" NFL to play 32 reg season games twice a week so fans can get their moneys worth. That could be bumped up to 64 games or 3 times a week in the near future.
Unions are outlawed.

GO JIMMY C GO! ,If Clausen beats Cam out decisively with a rookie cap then it's goodbye Cam...There is NO big guaranteed money anymore to buy him time like in years past...rookies don't perform it's CUT ,with no big paycheck to take with them anymore....GO JIMMY GO!

Posted by: Rae Carruth | May 28, 2011 10:44:45 AM

What exactly did Clausen do to make anyone feel that way about him? Name one game or even one play that was a sign of a good future with him at QB. His only improvement was less fumbling and throwing the ball out of bounds on 3rd downs. At the end of the year he took the sacks and threw incomplete on 3rd downs. Not a winner! His rookie contract is the only reason he will still be here next season.

anybody who post comments under the name rae curruth must be an idiot, so many idiots on these blogs, i just hope the lockout ends soon, and til the dummy that say the nfl need to play 32 games, what type of drug do u smoke, crack or met??..

Posted by: panther nation | May 28, 2011 12:39:53 PM

@Panther Nation - I agree..Also, the lockout will probably stretch into late July and August..

Ray it seems to me that either you play too much madden and want the NFL to be just like it, or you have never played football before. The toll that the game of pro football has on the players body would mean that in your world players would retire after about 4 seasons or teams would have to have well over 80 players on the roster. Sober up and think about what you posted man, you're better than that.

NHL plays 82 matches 3 periods of 20 minutes each.

NSA or National Soccer Ass plays 34 matches a season nonstop action run and gun with two 45 minutes halves or 90 minutes on a field 110 yards long and 50 yrs wide.

European Rugby plays 40 games a season and the forefather of American football. NO pads or helmet and its all run pass block and tackle.

The pussy US game of football was invented in 1848 at Cambridge combining Rugby and Soccer. Todays modern day football is the a total joke. The NFL especially with only 16 games a season and 7 minutes of play action time is laughable at best.

Todays arrogant wus cocky NFLers make mega millions strut like gods for the tv but are inferior athletes out of shape fat obese hogs weighing up to 350 lbs.

NFL players wouldnt last 5 minutes playing Rugby or Soccer or Hockey.

Todays NFL is a JOKE. They should be required to play 40-50 games miniumum. America getting ripped off by these overpaid bums.

Take off the pads and helmet too. Wussies.

Ray have you played football? I will give you the credit and say that you, even if just recently finding it, have good knowledge on the scheduling of other sports. I cannot speak on Rugby because I never watched it but from what I have seen, it doesn't appear that they run at each other full speed and hit with the ferociousness that American Football does (i.e. blindside hits, defenseless receiver, etc.) but again I have yet to watch. On the other hand I do watch soccer and NO, it doesn't compare physically, perhaps stamina yes, but physical play is nowhere close to that of American Football. I only ask if you have ever played because if you had, then you would understand there is a reason for the protection used. I'm sure if you were to want to get hit by a small car on purpose you would want protection as well.

Stop defending the indefensible.
NFL = WWE

Sports entertainment extortionism ripoff. The only difference between the fakery cheap shots in both is and non-athleticism is the WWE is year-round with 200 events. The NFL 16 games is laughable at best.

Neither are in the Olympics where the real athletes and events are because the World Olympic Committee does not recognize either.

ps Long live amatuer football at all levels as long as they dont work the system.

( 50 games in the NFL required )

Ray ,Soccer/Rugby sucks and will NEVER be relevant in the US...They are for dudes that can't make a NFL/NCAA roster...My god NEVER post anything about those jokes of a game please ,they are for kids and beer league fatboys.

Go ,go go Jimmy go!..your my pick Jimmy C!

Had it not been for those terrible boring soccer/rugby sports American football would not exist in 2011. Such ignorance.

And to think rugby is much more rugged than football but they dont have to any wear body armour pads or helmets. Why? They are dedicated real skilled athletes and not narcistic crazed ego maniacal theatrical NFLers with inferiority complexes seeking attention and millions for themselves. Real athletes and sports are naturals without the fanfare. Check the Olympics.

The bad part is America is the ones getting ripped off here with their own uninvited PSL ft row tv seats as 90% of NFL revenue comes from cable tv & the advertisements.

Obv some dont understand business or how the markets operate. The NFL business model with the union crooks = capitalist socialism. Its not spread the wealth but spread the costs.

Better stop while you behind. You in way over your head...

LOL @ the rugby comments.
Don't get me wrong I love rugby, and soccer is a very energetic sport. Professionally they are both inferior products atheletically to the NFL. I love how you would compare a 350 lbs Lineman with a athelete in soccer or rugby. A more comparable subject for rugby would be a Jhonathan Stewart at 6'1" 240 lbs with maybe 2% body fat running a 40yrd dash in 4.48 seconds, and he would smash the faces and bodies of any rugby athelete on the planet into a pretty red mush. Soccer is not a collision sport and I dare you to put one of those tinkerbells in as a slot reciever and see them get torn in half by a 200 lb defensive back running a 40 in 3.34 second. What you are comparing are the absolute most impressive atheletic specimins on the planet with premadonnas. I would also like for you to revisit your fat sloppy remarks by looking up former NFL and arena football ofensive lineman Donny Thompson, or rather the stongest power lifter on the planet, who by the way is American and lives in Columbia South Carolina. He could no longer play football anymore as his knees just could not take it, but he can squat 1235 lbs. Go to school kid, your in way over your head.

Besides the un-athletic phonyazz NFL players union being a total joke they have gotten so greedy brazen arrogant and brash to hold its own fans hostage for ransom in the form of extorting more billions for themselves using the long outdated defunct STRIKE is so laughable it defies logic proving they are nothing less than criminal thieves who should be not only terminated but also arrested.

Todays "instant replay" NFLers are pigs who showboat for their conned fans while America foots their billions in salaries with 4 dollar a gallon gas and everything else priced out of the ozone.

This is what happens when you put a bunch of lowlife thugs on a pedistle as semi-godlike idiots who are in reality the worst form of athleticists on the planet.

Vince McMahon tried his XFL knowing his WWF was the same type of sports entertainment. It only failed because the NFL and tv cable put it out of business using its monopoly powers. The Europe league failed. Canadian pro football is also a joke.

When will America wake up to this major scam?

NFL football = "wrasslin"

Amatuer kids, middle & high school plus college football where they dont cheat is 100% GREAT for America. Leave it alone.
