Who is No. 2? Baker says, who cares?
Jason Baker was assigned the No. 7 when he was traded from Denver to the Panthers in 2005.
The number has no special meaning to the Panthers' punter, but he intends to keep it.
It's not a big deal to Baker – and he hopes the team's quarterbacks feel the same way.
There was a little subplot that developed a few weeks ago after the Panthers selected former Auburn QB Cam Newton with the first overall pick. Newton said hoped to keep the No. 2 he wore at Auburn, which currently belongs to Panthers second-year QB Jimmy Clausen.
Clausen said No. 2 was his “right now,” and smiled when asked if he had set an asking price for it.
“We'll see what happens,” Clausen said.
Newton told WFNZ recently that the number was meaningful to him because he is the second of three sons. When Clausen was drafted in the second round last year, he wanted to keep No. 7, which he wore at Notre Dame.
Baker wasn't interested in giving up No. 7 – then or now.
“I have no intent to change jerseys and haven't been approached to do so,” he said this week in a text message.
Baker, one of the team's NFLPA reps, thinks too much has been made of the situation.
“I certainly hope that the guy who takes the snaps this fall at quarterback is more interested in the playbook and running an offense than he is the shirt that he wears over his pads,” he said.
“I'd like to win some games this fall,” Baker added. “It's more fun that way.”
But given Newton's high-profile stature, there are money and marketing issues in play. His jersey figures to be one of the league's top sellers, and the NFL doesn't want to put it on store racks with a question mark where the number should be.
But the league has a few more pressing issues to deal with at the moment. And until a new CBA is reached or the lockout is lifted, Newton's jersey – like free agency and trades – will have to wait.

If they pay him all that money he shouldn't care what his number is for that matter he shouldn't care if they put scam newton on the jersey for the type of money he's going to be making.

As long as Cam Newton doesn't wear #1 or #6, I could care less.

Baker Cough the number up! These Prima Donna QB's let this type stuff get to there head, I will be the middle man 25 G's and its yours Jimmy, Cam Takes 2 and you nail down some cash and since numbers don't matter pick one.....

baker could make all the cash he would need as a result of missing any game checks from the lockout and that would be a way better business decision than (a punter) saying i have no intention of giving up my number.
baker gets paid.
clausen gets his college number (and doesn't have to look stupid giving up #2, it is more of he is getting the number really wanted to start with, so he can save face)
newton gets what he wants and the panthers get to sell a lot of new jerseys.
i wonder how many people will rush out to buy baker's jersey with a new number on it? i'll put the over under on that at 2.5

This will be a non issue once Clausen gets traded haha!

Did Baker really say it was of no significance to him? He wore #7 at Iowa where he set a couple school records. So it can't be that insignificant to him I would think.

Newton should take Number 18 and be like Peyton Manning. Manning could also give him pointers on filming commercials.
If you wanna be the best, dress like the best.

So Baker says the number should be no big deal to the QB's, yet he refuses to give his up and makes a big deal out of it despite being just a mediocre punter.
What a douche.

Newton is a douche for making such a big deal about this. Most players have to do this and if he were serious about this he would take a derivative of the number and talk about being under center. Newton has to learn how to take snap.

Newton should wear 0 or be crafty and wear 00. That was the value the Panthers got in picking him. Seems only right.

Who cares? The merchandisers that are waiting to make a killing on Newton jerseys, punt boy. If it isn't that big of a deal, why don't you just give #7 to Clausen and worry about punting Carolina to a winning record?!

Who the hell cares what jersey number they wear....their performance on the field won't change because of a number.

Cam doesn't care what number he wears. He will win no matter what the number is.

Most of you morons never played this game you bet your @$#!!!! I'm taking my number from a f'n punter Jason Baker you suck the only reason they brought you in is because Sauerbrun was an idiot.

Baker deserves to keep his number from Clausen. He did made the best play for the Panthers in 2010, with that ankle tackle on Seattle's Leon Washington during a punt return. Preventing a touchdown; only for our defense to allow it on the next play lol.

Carolina please try very hard to bring in Ricardo Lockette Fort Valley State when the lockout or free agency is granted. PLEASE!!!!

He wore the # 1 in his rookie card photo. I'm sure he'll become happy with that number, because in his mind he is NUMBER ONE anyway.

Wow, a lot of hatred over a non-issue... I cannot believe someone said Baker should be cut for... I guess for his opinion on jersey numbers... WOW. "Hey, you, what's your opinion on the weather? You don't care? I disagree - fired!" Lol, you cheeky devils you...

Baker must be sad that Coach "sometimes a punt is a good play" Fox is gone. I mean you do need a decent punter on the team, but who can even name the punter of any team other than their own. The reason that punters and kickers can have all of these extra jobs like player reps is because they have all that free time. I wonder how hard it is to learn the punter play book?
