Munnerlyn hopes Smith stays with Panthers

We have a story today about Panthers cornerback Captain Munnerlyn serving as a volunteer assistant coach at his high school in Alabama during the lockout.

Munnerlyn, 23, said the defensive backs at Murphy High in Mobile had three questions for their new coach during spring practice.

"They were wondering when the lockout was going to be over, and wanted to know who was the toughest receiver and the best quarterback," Munnerlyn said.

Munnerlyn told his players June or July on the lockout questions, and said Tom Brady and Drew Brees were probably the best quarterbacks he's faced.

As for the receiver? Munnerlyn gave the nod to teammate Steve Smith.

"He's the best I've ever seen. I get to practice against him every day," Munnerlyn said. "He's a small guy, but he works so hard. He can jump. He can catch. He can run. He runs the best routes I've ever seen."

Munnerlyn might be facing Smith on Sundays if Smith is traded after the lockout. Smith has indicated he wants to move on, and did not attend the first day of the Panthers' informal workouts this week.

"Steve kind of took me under his wing when I first got there. So I hope he'll still be my teammate," Munnerlyn said. "But I really don't know the situation he's in. I just hope he's still wearing that Carolina blue with me."

ive looked everywhere i can think of and cant find any proof that steve smith has ever won a championship going back to high school (please correct me if im wrong). thats pretty indicative of a player that has always played this game for himself. his sideline rants and actions towards other teammates have pretty much defined his NFL career. once he retires chances are he will not have earned 1 single ring in all of his playing days. that speaks volumes considering football is a team sport. good riddance.

How many championships have you won?

Posted by: NorthKakylak | Jun 3, 2011 12:43:00 PM

You are an idiot. As if not ever winning a championship is an indication of a player's value. He is unpredictable and has made some huge mistakes, but he has always admitted those mistakes and handled it like a man should. I am so happy that we have had the opportunity to watch him all these years and will be upset if we don't keep him. If you want to know what he means to this team, watch the highlight of him catching a pass, taking a hit that broke his arm and after keeping his feet, turns into the endzone for the score. If half of the Panther's players had that kind of toughness and determination we would have won multiple championships by now.

dar456...so if you've never won a championship, it means you are a self-centered, me first player?! Most players never win a championship, that is why they are so coveted. I think very little of your post.

Steve Smith is the greatest Carolina Panther of all time. He has more toughness, team spirit and willingness to give it all up to gain 2 yards than anyone in the history of our organization. He deserves to go play with Phil Rivers or Peyton Manning and show the rest of the league he is still legit. He would make Reggie Wayne look like Dwayne Jarret. We owe it to him to cut him loose. He served his time in WR hell, with Jimmy "Pickle Boy" Clausen throwing balls into the 10th row. dar456, you are an absolute moron. Please never speak again.

Steve Smith had sex with my mom. I'm with you Dar456 - Good Riddance. Armanti Edwards is far superior anyways. Superior to Smitty at WR and Scam at QB.

Johnny Ringo, I had sex with your mother as well. Would you like me to leave town as well? And may I take your mother with me? She is a great companion on the open road.

Why Panther Blood - are we cross? Does this mean we can't be friends anymore? I just don't think I could bear it if we couldn't be friends anymore.

The people posting on here are nothing but a handful of ragtags and a few crusty bitches. Especially you Panther Blood. And if you try to rise up against me I will paint BofA Stadium with your blood. Two coats.

Steve Smith is a great player. I just wish he would take the initiative and bitch slap Jimmy Clausen in public. Preferably at a charity event. I like his work with Anthony Black. That was a really nice shot to the eye socket. Or perhaps he would go with the Ken Lucas approach and wait til he bends down to pick something up and when he looks back up crush his skull with a right cross straight outta Inglewood. I also think he looks like the late Eazy E. I wonder if they ever hung out in the early 1990's. Does anyone else wonder about those kind of things?

An unsung quiet hero good guy kicker named Kasey is by far the alltime #1 best player and leading scorer many many times over plus won many many more games than Smith or anyone else even dreamed of winning. Aint even close.

Face reality. Smith had a good year or two but was always vastly overrated. Unfortunately hes now whipped beaten and banged up so bad put together with pins and needles it aint even funny.
Obv some fools think new QB Scam will be the savior and put SS back in his younger form? Wrong. Aint gonna happen. Cheap shot Smith has not only been washed but could get seriously injured sucking for 3 yrs and scared to take a hit.
Scam wont cut it in the NFL if they ever play again.

And what happens when the owners decide they have had it with this BS and abandon the fool goons to open real legit businesses to provide millions of new jobs to America ?

So here I am in 1999, sitting comfortably in the study of my home in Utah, firing up AOL to try and find some more 13 year-old girls with pioneer hairstyles to rape and then call my wife, when I hear a knock on the door. How delightful, my daughter is home for spring break from the university of Utah, and she has brought her new boyfriend! I have my 4th wife answer the door and hear her shriek as the door swings open. I rush to see what is the matter and as I turn the corner I see what appears to be a colored boy carrying my daughters bags. Now, like any good christian, I hate me some colored folk - but there was something about the way that he spat on my unconcious wife and punched my daughter in the eye that made me take a liking to him. Now here I am 12 years later, several million dollars richer, and with several kiddie porn dungeons having been added to my vast estate. And I owe all of this to my wonderful son in law, Steve. Straight outta compton. So the next person that slanders my family on this website will be struck down my mine own hand.

To claim that a kicker is the best player in franchise history is a sad testament to the state of this franchise. Maybe he is the best at praying.Or maybe the best at kicking the ball out of bounds with the Super Bowl on the line. He is good at those two things.

We think Jon Kasay is also the best at growing a cool mustache, owning a store for left handed people in the mall, and being the best dad ever!

My destiny is to touch the sun and feel its warmth upon the skin of my fingertips. I believe that every soul in this world has a mission that they are supposed to fulfill beginning on the day of their birth. I have felt a indestructible magnetic force pulling and tugging at my spirit since erupting from the womb in an explosion of fire and passion. In an effort to release this pressure I have gone to great lengths to create a higher level of consciousness attainable only when one reaches the pinnacle of the 4th dimension. As we enter a new age of human development there is only one way to know exactly who holds the key to the inner workings of the universe. I see a bright light in the sky beckoning me to go forth and become one with the eternal flame of life. When the time is ripe to ascend into the next stratosphere I will spread my wings and fly higher and higher as my reptilian brother glides effortlessly by my side. Could this be the moment we have all been waiting for? I only have one regret before I am engulfed by the love and fellowship of the children of the sun: That I did not see my own face in the mirror. I was looking at a complete stranger and now I will never know what my physical being was during my time here. I urge you to join me in this movement to crusade against the dark forces in the world. With that I leave you. Sparkle.

this is one of the comment i ever read, you panthers fans are sure funny....

Posted by: jeuxde6 | Jun 3, 2011 5:12:22 PM

i dont care what any of yall say. weve sucked more years than not and 89 has been here for all of it. things have gone from bad to worse and at times last year he looked as bad as the rookies. claussen gets a bad rap (as deserved) but having the "greatest panther of all time" dropping balls every game isnt doing anyone any favors.

heres to cam! it camt get any worse

Brains squirming like a toad on a hot sidewalk. That's the image I get when I read the crap posted here. Not all, but most.

How can anyone put john kasey down. look at what hes done for the panthers. you are a moron if you think that he isnt the greatest anther of all time. hes the only original anther left on the roster. thank you john for all your hard work and everything youve done for the panthers and what youve put up with all these years.

I agree Steve Smith is one of the best and toughest receivers to play in the NFL. I would hate for him to get traded.
I have seen him make some amazing catches over the years, and would like to see him make more in a Panthers uniform.

I'm black and mormon (whites are a minority in this worldwide church btw) and it's not uncommon.

Steve Smith has some issues but I'd imagine you and your family have issues too. And yet, good people can still arise out of that.

Steve Smith is the fukn man! Scam Newton sucks donkey dick!

Posted by: Panther Fan | Jun 4, 2011 2:00:53 PM

Steve Smith is my favorite player in the NFL and John Beason my 2nd favorite and both play for the Carolina Panthers. So Steve, I know you've to do what's best for you and your family, but please stay in Carolina because I think Cam Newton at QB will have great dividends for you and the team. Stay with the Panthers Steve and lets bust ass!!!
