Cam Newton knows NFL 'a high level'

Cam Newton addressed the Charlotte media today, saying he expects to "pay his dues" as a rookie and that's he's "not above" carrying vets' pads, or doing other rookie traditions.

Newton said it was important to get to camp on time. He also said Steve Smith's return and the presence of playmakers at tight end and running back will ease his transition to the NFL.

Smith and Newton have been working out privately in Charlotte, and Newton said the sessions have shown him the pro game "is played at a high level," and all his throws "don't have to be perfect for Mr. Smith to catch the football."

Newton, who wore No. 2 at Auburn, said he wanted to keep the number but was not willing to meet Jimmy Clausen's asking price for the jersey number. Newton, who will wear No. 1, said he has no hard feelings toward Clausen, adding the two have been getting along in film sessions and position meetings.

-- The Panthers have released a roster, and it shows they still have a few moves to make. It lists 87 players, three short of the 90 teams are allowed to have in camp post-lockout.

One of those additions figures to be a veteran quarterback. The Panthers still need another corner, especially with rookie Brandon Hogan's knee in question.

Philly corner Asante Samuel is available after the Eagles' huge acquisitions this week. And the Panthers already have signed two former Eagles defensive players with ties to Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott -- S Sean Considine and LB Omar Gaither, a Charlotte native.

The Panthers have five Williamses on roster: DeAngelo, Garry, Jason, Thomas & Zack. Heights/weights have not been updated. Guard Duke Robinson is still listed at 6-5 and 330 pounds -- ish.

In other news:

-- Former Panthers cornerback Richard Marshall is headed to the Arizona Cardinals, joining former Panther Jeff King.

-- Veteran kicker Olindo Mare said he wasn't going to try to replace John Kasay, the Panthers kicker since their inception and the last original Panther before being released Friday. "I'm just going to be me. ... That's worked pretty well," Mare said.

Mare has lived in Mooresville five years. "I'm from South Florida, my wife's from New York," Mare said. "So it's 11 hours each way. I don't know how that worked out"

Rather than keep Rosario on the bench behind our two new tight ends, why not use him as a receiver/tight end, let Mike Shula do his job and coach Cam, bring in two good secondary pieces and another defensive/offensive piece?
I get excited about the 2011 year especially with the new moves and new coaches.
Go gettum Panthers

In an article a couple days ago, Otah was said to be 100%

Wondering what was Clausen's asking price?

Posted by: panfan1 | Jul 30, 2011 1:51:28 PM

I thought they released Rosario the other day....thnks for the update on Otah...he is very much needed and he should be healthy since he didn't play at all last year...I with you guys...this should be a fun year if we are agressive on defense...and I mean agressive....and I hope we spread the field on offense...GO PANTHERS!!!

safety is a position where there will be some incredible competition to make the panthers final 46

an autographed cam newton number 1 jersey.

We're a cornerback and another wide receiver away from a playoff run, imho. Does anyone know where we are with respect to the cap?

Panthers have the toughest schedule in the NFL in 2011. I don't think they'll hand Newton to the wolves just yet and Clausen may never be more than a 3rd stringer. Look for Hurney to sign Marc Bulger to a 1 yr deal to start and mentor the kids, mostly start and take the punches while Newton learns the Pro game.

Good for you Clausen, for not giving in to that cheapskate.

Have the panthers signed Mcclain yet?

Posted by: Jared Ross | Jul 30, 2011 3:19:33 PM

FYI on Otah. This line was in the blog post "Update: Panthers arriving at camp" yesterday:

- Offensive tackle Jeff Otah, who missed last season with a knee problem, says he's fully healthy and able to do everything at camp.

Asante is not a FA is he? Why would you say he's available?

Posted by: Roaring Riot | Jul 30, 2011 3:43:01 PM

He's considered available because of the Eagles acquiring Rodgers-Cromartie and Asomugha. Why would the Eagles pay Samuels 8.4 million to be the 3rd CB? It seems logical that he can be had in a trade.

Sign Nate Clements, a former first rounder and a pro bowler, and Jamaal Anderson (2007's 8th overall pick). I think Anderson needs a fresh start, that's all. Give them 2 years contracts and they will probably play better than Marshall and Brayton.

Are we seriously looking at Asante? That would be a beast move for the Panthers!

Posted by: DieHardCat | Jul 30, 2011 5:08:20 PM

Thou mighty Omniscient, Mr. Newton It is I humble servant of Cam-A-Lot, how gracious is the great 1, whom have come to save this city from the evil turnover machine also know as Jake trash!! Delhome...We are at the mercy of your arm oh great 1....

Posted by: cheven | Jul 30, 2011 5:21:21 PM

Who is going to be our #2 receiver, im still not sure we have one.

Posted by: SHAWN | Jul 30, 2011 6:09:47 PM

Make sure you get back whatever he carries for you. The convict will try to steal it and sell. Which college did he steal a laptop from????

Posted by: John | Jul 30, 2011 7:27:50 PM

Get over the laptop already. It was years ago, he could buy 100 laptops today and not even feel it in the checkbook. I believe his thieving days are done.
