Cam Newton wearing jersey No. 1 - for now

0726camnewton

The No. 1 overall NFL draft pick has been assigned jersey No. 1, although Cam Newton still hopes to wear No. 2, currently worn by second-year quarterback Jimmy Clausen, according to sources.

Newton (above), the Panthers' rookie quarterback, wore No. 2 last year in his only season at Auburn, which he led to the national championship. But that number belongs to Clausen, who went 1-9 as a starter in his rookie season.

Clausen has not yet illustrated a willingness to give up the number.

Asked Tuesday if they had figured out the jersey situation, Clausen said: "Not yet. It's my No. 2 right now, so we'll see what happens."

Clausen wore No. 7 at Notre Dame, but Panthers punter Jason Baker would not give up the number last year, despite a request by Clausen.

Newton is said to be wary of wearing No. 1 because of the extra attention it might draw. In previous situations like this, players have purchased numbers from teammates.

A resolution is expected soon, because the team is eager to sell Newton's jersey, with whatever number that might be.

Due to his draft position, Number 1 seems fitting. Wasn't that his mentor Warren Moon's number?

This is ridiculous. Hey Baker, give up No. 7 and ask for "< 10" as in "punt inside the 10" for cryin out loud.

It is my opinion that the people who would criticize him for wearing #1 are the people who are going to hate him regardless of what he does. There is a certain unreasonable sect of people in this world that believe if you do stupid, illegal or immoral things as an 18-year-old, you are forever a criminal and evil and should be called such every time your name is mentioned for the rest of your life, that if your father does something illegal or immoral, that makes you a criminal or immoral all the days of your life, and if you ever say out loud that you want to be great, you are forever an arrogant, evil person. If Cam found a cure for cancer, these people would still hate him.

Those of us who are more reasonable, and want him to be great because he is on our team, will not equate him wearing jersey number 1 with anything evil.

It is my opinion that selecting the Post button once is sufficient.

Just teasing you J.

That's funny that Clausen got punked by the punter. Cam should just wait until next year as Clausen is more likely to be starting in Canada than he is mopping up for Cam. Guy looks like he's throwing a shot put on the 15 yard out. Get him outta here!

Baker should give up #7

He'll change jersey numbers next year.

Newton did stupid immoral illegal unethical things as an 18 year old too?? Appreciate the new info.

We know he did all those things as a 19 20 and 21 year old but at age 18 too? Damn. Where did that come from and what was it? He entered Florida at age 19. We need to know what he did to cause Urban Meyer to quit twice.

Dont forget the Heisman is coming back as well as Auburns 2010 NCAA title so all thats erased in 2 yrs max.

Also the FBI is still heavily involved in investigating and will take their time to arrest charge and presecute the guilty. We know who that will be.

Why not a traditional number like 12 instead?

"presecute"...really? How long do think that will take, 28-27 more days? You might want to head to TTown Menswear for your suit, that is if they haven't given their entire inventory to the football team.

hey phil #12 belongs to david gettis but i think he should wear a stronger number than 1 or 2 to me those numbers belong to kickers and punters i think he should wear #10 and give #1 to the loser from app state

@ J

Thank you for saying what should have been said a long time ago. He is a Panther now, he was cleared by the NCAA, and people just need to move on. Those of us who are real fans on here already have.

Bravo!

@ Chris 45
you can call him a lot of things but "loser" shouldnt be one... Player out of position, drafted too high (which he was), too short, not a punt returner (last returned punts in JR HIGH), and never given a chance by Fox (the TWO times he got on the field he had positive plays...)
Lay Off Edwards, he's a class kid, hard worker, and WINNER - theres 2 National Championship trophies and a Walter Payton Award in his back pocket to prove it. I wish the Panthers would just release or trade him, then he could get out and away from these wannabee-dont have a clue about football player fans.... God help Cam Newton. hes in for a long hard road here..

Who cares what number Newton wants to wear, he should be wearing 5 digits aross his back. T thought after knowing the Richardson's for almost 30 years I would never be so ashame as I i'm now. I always thought they had more class than to hire a crook and a cheat--I guess he will be like Edwards- to stupid to learn the playbook-thats why he had to cheat at auburn. They have lost their class as well as my money

I think the Cam-eleon should keep the #1. It could be interpreted as the "I" in "Icon".

ROD - WTH are you talking about? Why should he be wearing 5 digits and how did he cheat at Auburn to avoid learning the playbook? Please enlighten us all.

The #1 is perfect for Cam Newton. Especially from a marketing standpoint, the #1 will fly off the shelves!

Stop the debate...this makes too much sense!

I would figure Under Armour may step in, since it would be great for marketing to have some continuity in his college and pro number.
