Carolina Panthers: Live from BofA Stadium

Live Wednesday updates from Bank of America Stadium on the Carolina Panthers from Joe Person and Ron Green Jr. Hit refresh for the latest news on this blog.

4:56 p.m.: Panthers sign 1-year deals w/ DBs Cletis Gordon and De'von Hall and TE/FB Richie Brockel. Brockel and Hall have ties to Ron Rivera. All this, and it's just 5 o'clock. Hurney on the day's developments: "I think around the league it's been extremely busy (but) productive."

4:45 p.m.: BREAKING NEWS: Panthers sign Jets free agent TE Ben Hartsock to 2-year deal, which means Dante Rosario is probably gone (like King).

4:40 p.m.: Panthers GM Marty Hurney said John Kasay was victim of the new kickoff rule that moved spot up 5 yards. Didn't want to keep 3 kickers again. Hurney had red-rimmed eyes while talking about Kasay, who was told by Hurney they were going after a kicker. Hurney said Kasay took the news like a professional. Team is expected to release Kasay on Thursday. Retirement? "He's an extremely competitive individual and probably will want to continue kicking in this league," Hurney said. "It was an extremely difficult decision."

Hurney said the Panthers' dump of dead money during the uncapped year helped create the space that has allowed them to be aggressive. On commitment to Thomas Davis after 2 knee surgeries, Hurney said training staff is convinced Davis is great physical condition. Hurney: "Our philosophy has been and will be core players." Next up: LB Jon Beason and C Ryan Kalil, though it won't be this week.

4:30 p.m.: BREAKING NEWS: Panthers sign LBs Thomas Davis and James Anderson to 5-year deals. Anderson was UFA.

3:30 p.m.: Panthers agree to deal with kicker Olindo Mare. Find me one person who had kicker listed among the Panthers' free-agent priorities. How soon until the John Kasay retirement news conference? Panthers trending younger ... but only slightly. Kasay 41, Mare 38. No truth to rumor that Morten Andersen will handle kickoffs.

2:00 p.m.: Multiple reports the Browns have released Jake Delhomme. Panthers, anyone?

1:44 p.m.: ESPN insider Adam Schefter reports DeAngelo Williams gets five years and $43 million ($21 million guaranteed) to stay with Panthers. Panthers have more than $50M in guaranteed money for their 2 biggest free agents. Beason, Davis up next. Rookie wage scale coming in handy.

1:13 p.m.: Jonathan Stewart posts video from inside Panthers locker room today.

1:05 p.m.: Panthers' strategy looks clear: Spend big money on core - Johnson, Williams, Beason - and fill in with cost-effective help. It's what they've said they'd do all along. The name you've not heard mentioned is Steve Smith. That discussion comes after FAs signed.

1:04 p.m.: Ryan Kalil: "I'm sure the front office is going crazy right now with this fire sale of players."

12:46 p.m.: Scott Fowler reports that Cam Newton has told the team he will keep jersey No. 1. Read Scott's blog on the decision here.

12:36 p.m.: Panthers annual free FanFest at BofA stadium is Sat., Aug.6th. Team says it will release full training camp schedule later today.

12:35 p.m.: Panthers owner Jerry Richardson says GM Marty Hurney is talking to LBs Thomas Davis and Jon Beason about extensions today plus to free agent RB DeAngelo Williams. There's more from our interview with Richardson here.

12:25 p.m.: Geoff Schwarz says Panthers offensive linemen have been meeting with coach John Matsko, trying to learn new terminology and get a jump-start on Spartanburg. OL Mackenzy Bernadeau said it will be different with one padded practice a day at Wofford. "Two-a-days is what we've done since high school."

12:10 p.m.: NFL Network's Michael Lombardi tweets that running back DeAngelo Williams will be finalized today--Carolina, Giants Broncos all in the mix--Panthers have a slight lead

11:58 a.m.: NFL releases video of Cam Newton interview from Tuesday. Says he wants to come in and learn, and that he expects preparation for season to be "express train." Says he wants Steve Smith back, as do many others around organization. Says he hopes to be in training camp on time, but that it's out of his control.

Newton didn't speak with local media on Tuesday.

11:46 a.m.: Ryan Kalil just arrived at the stadium wearing a backpack. Still hasn't met all the coaches. "Feels like the first day of school," he said.

10:45 a.m.: Media horde more of a gaggle this morning at BoA Stadium, where S Charles Godfrey just arrived.

10:40 a.m.: Panthers have signed a DE (Charles Johnson) and NT (Ron Edwards), now working on a LB. Marty Hurney talking to James Anderson's reps today.

10:14 a.m.: Kansas City Star's Adam Teicher reports, via Twitter, that NT Ron Edwards has signed a three-year deal with the Panthers. He had 15 tackles, 11 assists and two sacks for the Chiefs a year ago, starting 15 of 16 games. He's 6-3, 315 pounds, and 32 years old. He's also been mostly a 3-4 nose tackle during his career. Adam Schefter tweets deal is 3 years, $8.25 million.

9:00 a.m.: With TE Jeff King, a good blocker and good locker room guy, headed to Arizona, will be interesting to see what Panthers do with Dante Rosario. Jeremy Shockey and Gary Barnidge are under contract, but they need a 3rd TE, and Rosario is versatile ... and young.

When are they gonna start negotiating with DeAngelo? I think he is a much larger priority than James Anderson. Anderson is a great young LB, but he is no game changer the way D Will is.

They met with DeAngelo yesterday, or that's what the NFL Network reported. That probalby indicates that he is still entertaining offers from other teams.

Didn't they meet with DeAngelo's group yesterday? Did we get any feedback from that meeting?

When is smith getting traded??, any sightings of Cam????

What's really going to be bad is if DeAngelo moves to another team. Then our Front Office will even look like bigger idiots for not trading him early last season before he was hurt.

32 year old NT brought in to a 4-3?? WTF

Posted by: Fly | Jul 27, 2011 11:07:04 AM

They could bring Jesus in and people would still critizes them. Probably say he is too old...

Posted by: Debbie | Jul 27, 2011 11:12:51 AM

Hold your horses people, Double Trouble will stay intact. Rotoworld is reporting that Denver is prioritizing their D-Line and won't spend the money it would take to get DeAngelo. So he will be back for sure, just a matter of time.

I like the signing of the old Vet Edwards. Similar to what Brentson Buckner did for Dan Morgan, Edwards can eat up blocks allowing Jon Beason to destroy people.

I hate to say this, but I dont think they should break the bank for D Williams. 3-4M per year. You can have other free-agent running backs for 1-2M per year. I would rather pay 5-6M per year for a stud reciever. Everyone puts 8-9 in the box on us...we need threats on the outside !

randy moss anyone?...at all?

Posted by: yancy | Jul 27, 2011 11:54:33 AM

No

Posted by: Randy Moss | Jul 27, 2011 12:00:00 PM

Agree we need a quality WR to place with Smitty or replace him if he gets traded. I suspect any receiver signed will be a 2nd tier, as the only true stars (Rice, Holmes, Edwards) are ultra mucho $$$$$.

So has there been any negotiating going on today with the #2 jersey? I would think this would be wrapped up soon so we can start ordering our Newton jerseys. I hope he gets 2 otherwise he's going to make the switch next year right back to it and we'll all have to either buy new jerseys or not buy one in the first place this year.

If we sign Jesus, then Cam can't wear #1 either.
