Panthers acquire another tight end

(Update: The Panthers did not have to trade a player in the Olsen deal, as originally reported. Just their third-round pick in 2012).

The Panthers made a trade Thursday.

But it wasn't the one many expected.

Hours after Steve Smith backed off his trade demands and decided to stay in Charlotte, the Panthers traded for Chicago tight end Greg Olsen, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The Tribune reported the Panthers will give up a player and draft pick to acquire Olsen, but did not identify the player other than it is not believed to be Smith.

A Panthers' spokesman said general manager Marty Hurney does not comment on trades until they are official.

Like Jeremy Shockey, who signed with the Panthers before the lockout, Olsen played at the University of Miami. Both played for Panthers offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski, who was the tight ends coach and offensive coordinator for the Hurricanes.

Olsen, who is in the final year of his rookie deal, caught 41 passes for 404 yards and five touchdowns last year in a Mike Martz offense that did not utilize the tight ends downfield.

That will not be the case with the Panthers. At his introductory press conference, Ron Rivera, who watched tight end Antonio Gates exploit defenses in San Diego, said he wanted to find a tight end who could be productive in the pass game.

Now the Panthers have found two, although Olsen has less mileage on his legs than the 30-year-old Shockey.

They also signed blocking tight end Ben Hartsock, giving them a complete overhaul at the position.

Check back for updates.

King was already gone - he signed with AZ a couple of days ago.

I still can't believe Chicago let him go.. Talk about taking the pressure off of Smitty, Cam now has yet another serious weapon to throw to in Olsen. This is the best off season ever. Smitty must be absolutely thrilled about this signing. I'm thinking the front office let him know early this morning their intentions to sign Olsen. It's no coincidence he wants to all of a sudden retire a Panther now. :D

I'm guessing we gave away Gamble. If so great he sucks

The Bears wanted a blocking TEnd( which Olsen is horrible at) as in why he was traded. Rumors has it Lafell or Gettis was part of the deal along giving away a draft pick.

Could the player be Clausen? Can't think of too many guys the Bears would want and we would be willing to give up...except Clausen. Pretty sure it wouldn't be Smith. All that retire a panther stuff aside, I wouldn't trade Smith AND a pick for Olsen. Glad to have Olsen just hope the price wasn't too steep.

Interested to see who we gave up!!!!

I would bet we are giving away either Dan Conner or Clausen ... The Bears need to start grooming their replacement for Urlacher, and need an insurance policy if Cutler takes a crap this season ... I doubt we'd give away anything better than one of them AND a draft pick ..

I'm thinking maybe we'd give away David Gettis or possibly even LaFell ? The Bears have serious holes @ the WR position, and just lost Cutler's safety net.

I'm not so worried about the player as I am the pick we gave up. That has come back to bite us before. Hopefully a 6 round pick.

It's not my fault, LOL the post button "posts" but doesn't always show your post when you click the button as it's supposed to do so it fakes you into thinking the script is dead. Obviously this site isn't fully compatible w/ chrome.

I would say no on Gettis...Gettis's game is more about speed and they've got Hester. More likely LaFell, he would fit better for them. But if it's LaFell that's gonna mean it was a higher pick we gave up. I'd rather give up Clausen and a fourth than LaFell and a second. Remember Olsen was a former first round pick and is a talented pass catching TE and he is still very young. He might not fit what they want to do there but that doesn't mean they're going to give him away for peanuts (and LaFell is kinda peanuts at this point in his young career.)

Clayton is saying it was Connor.

Posted by: Yo | Jul 28, 2011 8:00:35 PM

We didnt trade Gettis - my money is Connor or Goodson. We arent dumb enough to trade a position we already need help with (WR or CB) and get thinner there in order to bolster a position we are good not great at (TE).

Aside from all that, I love this move, now we dont have to draft a TE next year and we can focus on getting other pieces that remain to be filled!
