Panthers: Live updates from the stadium

Live updates from Bank of America Stadium, where Day 3 of the great remaking of the Carolina Panthers is under way. Check back here for live updates, hit refresh for the latest news, and follow @josephperson and @rongreenjr on Twitter.

11:46 a.m.: Linebacker James Anderson on ESPN's Smith report: "I'm quite sure if he publicly said that he means it. So it makes me happy to know he's coming back. He's a heck of a player, a great commodity to the team."

11:45 a.m.: Outside linebacker James Anderson, a day after agreeing to a 5-year, $22 million contract, says he's pleased the Panthers retained their core players, as they said they would. "We brough back a lot of great quality football players," he said. "Marty said he wanted to keep his core guys together and they are doing it, so I feel like we've got a good nucleus of a team that can go out there and make some things happen."

11:42 a.m.: Secondary coach Ron Meeks is asked whether the Panthers might bring in outside help in the defensive backfield. Meeks says that's not his area.

11:35 a.m.: Armanti Edwards arrives at the stadium, says he has not spoken to Steve Smith or heard the ESPN report that Smith "wants to be a Panther for life."

11:30 a.m.: Panthers punter Jason Baker leaves BofA Stadium, saying he was heading home to enjoy his last day before reporting to training camp in Spartanburg Friday.

10:48 a.m.: Adam Schefter of ESPN talks to Steve Smith, who says he's staying.

10:41 a.m.: Lots of chatter about Steve Smith saying he'll stay with Panthers, but as yet no credible links to put with that thought, so we'll offer it for what it's worth.

10:00 a.m.: Pro Football Talk wonders if DeAngelo Williams' deal with the Panthers complicates the situation with former ECU star Chris Johnson and the Titans. Doubt DeAngelo or the Panthers care.

9:57 a.m.: In case you missed it, the list of today's Panthers links, including a story about Greg Hardy's near-death experience in a Knoxville motorcycle wreck.

I would say Steve Smith coming back (www.profootballweekly) pretty much trumps the 1st 2 updates!

Smith story also tweeted by Michael Lombardi of NFL Network. Huge coup by Rivera and Hurney to keep all the core players!

I think ESPN is a credible line, and they have this story. C'mon, CO! Get up to speed! http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/6812000/carolina-panthers-steve-smith-wants-retire-team

Anyone else find it interesting that before the NFL draft, we were likely to lose Steve Smith and DeAngelo Williams (since he told a Miami radio station barring a bad draft). Cam Newton comes in, grabs a playbook the only day they could, impresses his teammates in volunteer practices, is showing a great deal of maturity for his age (and reputation in college), and Smith and DeAngelo reverse their decision and decide to stay?

I'm a huge Gamecock fan, so naturally I hated Cam Newton, but I have to say that he's at least growing on me this offseason. Granted he can prove himself on the field--the biggest test--the Panthers might have found their guy.

Now that steve is not going we need to get him a another play maker actually we need to do it for Cam. I think steve smith from the nyg or Edwards would be a good pickup even take a chance on Roy william he might come cheap I just know we need 1 more playmaker that will make smith more happy and will also take less presure of cam

Newton drops back, looks down field, finds Smith wide open......... TOUCHDOWN Panthers!!!

Roy Williams? He would have to come SUPER cheap!

I would take another receiver like Randy Moss, Plax, Edwards, Roy Willams, Any of these and we will be alot better on Offense.

Awesome, I didn't know Rivera retained Coach Meeks!

And if you want Roy Williams, you're an idiot. He is god awful.

The Panthers should go after Darren Sproles or Brad Smith to bolster our return game, which has been awful in the past couple years.
