Rookie scale gives Panthers flexibility

ATLANTA – Jerry Richardson vowed the Panthers would be aggressive in free agency, whenever it starts.

Sitting at $50 million under the proposed cap, the Panthers have the resources to make defensive end Charles Johnson a very rich man, while holding on to other core players (tailback DeAngelo Williams, center Ryan Kalil, linebacker Thomas Davis) and pursuing other team's free agents.

The rookie wage scale in the proposed CBA will help.

Richardson said Panthers quarterback Cam Newton likely would receive roughly half of the $50 million in guaranteed money St. Louis quarterback Sam Bradford collected in a record deal as last year's No. 1 overall pick.

Traditionally, if it were built off the last couple of contracts of quarterbacks, it could be $20 million to $25 million (less),” Richardson said of a deal for Newton. “But he has an option year that is a huge number that we would have to offer him. And that number is substantial.”

Richardson said he does not foresee any stumbling blocks in signing Newton.

He was less clear about the future of receiver Steve Smith, who has asked for a trade.

I have no idea,” Richardson said Thursday when asked about Smith. “I love Steve. But I'll be honest with you, Steve has not been at the forefront of my mind right now.”

Richardson is hopeful the NFLPA ratifies the deal quickly so the Panthers – with a new coaching staff that has yet to do any on-field work with its players – can get going.

Our coaching staff knows the names of our players. But they really can't put the name with the face, and don't really know them,” Richardson said. “So obviously they're champing at the bit to get there.”

It will soon be time to prowl Big Cat! Last year was rough, very rough. But the man saw this coming, and he's positioned us for some good things. Patience will still be necessary but we have some fine young talent and a big checkbook to go shopping with!

Looks like Steve is on his way out the door.

A checkbook that was paid for with the fans money. By putting crap on the field for the last two years, while raising ticket prices. Jerry is so smug that he only has to pay Cam the scam half of what he would have. All i can say to Jerry ####off, you wont get any more of my money.

Champing at the bit? Reminds me of a funny scene from Curb your Enthusiasm. "Chomping? Is it chomping? Chopping?" "I think it's chomping"

Clay, you are lying and I don't even know you. You can say that now because, you are right, we did suck for the last two years. However, I wish you and a lot of other bandwagon jumpers would stop lying to us and to yourselves when you say that the Panthers will never get another dime from you, YES THEY WILL!!!! As soon as the Panthers start winning, and winning big. As soon as they start getting closer and closer to getting the big ring, you and all the other fair weather fans will jumping up and down on Sundays yelling "THAT'S MY TEAM", and that is when the dollars will start flying, even if you get a Cam Newton shirt from Walmart.

Thanks, Real Panther...couldn't have said it better myself. Besides JR looks like a genius now with all money he has to play with this year. It was all a business move. That is why he is a billionaire, and I sit at a desk.

Cam won't make it to the 5th yr big money ,he'll make it to yr 2 cut and see ya deal...NO longer will rookies have spots on a roster for there contract size at any position by the 2nd year if you don't show pro-bowl tallent it's CUT time!

Jerry comes out looking like the smartest person in the league.

YR 2! ,he won't make it 1 yr the way Clausen was thrown under the bus...lock-out or not no excuses by next year ,because we will be picking top 3 again!

Newton is the next Randall Cunningham... remember him? You guys who hate on him are being stupid. Real Stupid. He has come in with a great attitude and from what i have read he has been working hard in the off season to become a better QB instead of just taking time off like he could... DeMarcus Russell would have NEVER worked like Newton has in the offseason. So don't compate them - they are not even close to the same player. Newton will take this team to the Super Bowl in three years.

The video on Panthers website making Jerry look like a hero is just disgusting PR garbage.

All the Panthers need is some beef in the Dline, to resign Steve Smith and keep the O-line healthy and they will be a contender again. Another WR would also help but i actually like LaFell and Gettis... And a healthy Shockey will be solid. I could see another CB - but we have some young guys who might step up there and i am still hoping the Panthers move A. Edwards to CB where he would be a beast.

Bottom line is Marty - I am coming for you job SON!

Yes, Richardson looks GREAT for punting an entire season on the fans' dime. Now we can re-sign the core of a 2-14 team! How could that not work out?

It is "champing" at the bit, not chomping.
Look it up.

@ Real Panther...when do you predict that this "winning big" will start taking place?

Posted by: George Hanson | Jul 22, 2011 2:12:54 PM

Get real. Jerry Richardson despises the bad character and manipulation of Scam Newton and has indicated so in the past.
Dont try to pull that crap.
He tried like hell to trade him but noone wanted him in the whole league.

I'm glad we have the cap space but I really hope we don't overpay our own free agents like we've done in the past (see: Delhomme, Jake & Gamble, Chris). Don't forget how we paid "Doubtful" Dan Morgan either while we let Witherspoon take a walk. Witherspoon is still cracking heads while DM is making mozzeralla sticks at Cheez Mo's on Rea Rd now if anyone is wondering. Defintiely re-sign Johnson, Williams, and Kalil but please err on the side of caution with T Davis. I love him but the guy's knees are about as weak as they can get. Oh yeah and I think Cam is going to surprise a lot of doubters this year. Kid's a stud, can't wait to see him!

Posted by: diddy | Jul 22, 2011 3:06:06 PM

@kevin - JR tried like hell to trade Cam Newton? You can't trade an unsigned player and teams can't even talk about trades during the lockout so what are you talking about? JIf there were character concerns then JR could have vetoed the pick but he didn't. Your personal grudge against the guy (who I doubt you've ever met) doesn't give you the right to spout-off with lies and hate. I just hope you're a fair-weather fan so I won't have to sit in the same stadium as you.

kevin obv means jr tried to trade off number one pick newton and its true that noone wanted to deal with him before or after the draft

Posted by: ned | Jul 22, 2011 3:54:46 PM

Prediction: Cam Newton biggest bust in Panthers history. Watch and learn people.

Posted by: troy | Jul 22, 2011 4:16:04 PM

CNewton sure has plenty of enemies up there in Charleston NC. He wasnt liked in Florida either.

I think it's a GREAT idea to re-sign all of our players from the 2-14 team, don't you? Heck, there's nothing like keeping the whole team together when you're the worst team in the league!
Then, you draft a QB with the number 1 pick for two years in a row...and they're not even given the opportunity to run the 1st team in the spring or summer! Oh, and don't forget our #2 pick Armanti...he's our savior! Why, he can't even read a playbook or stay in shape. At least he's on a team that is within driving distance of visiting his dad.
Then we have good ol' penny-pinchin' Richardson (kinda rhymes). Yeah, he's got $50 million to spend...which he has to spend only $39 million. That money will be spent on Cam, the wasted draft pick, and all of our current players that just HAVE to be re-signed. FREE AGENTS? You're kidding, of course. Maybe a Big Receiver, say a Randy Moss or a Santonio Holmes, to pair with Steve Smith (he's not going anywhere)? How about a Nnamdi Asomugha or Ike Taylor for a shutdown Corner? It will never happen, Panther fans. Jerry is a miser and he's hanging onto every cent before he dies!

I sure am looking forward to the 2011 Panther season, aren't you?
