Final: Bengals 24, Panthers 13

CINCINNATI – If the Panthers' third preseason game was meant to approximate a real game, first-year coach Ron Rivera has a lot of work to do before the results begin to count on his record.

The Panthers jumped out to a 7-0 lead, then allowed Cincinnati to score 24 unanswered first-half points Thursday in the Bengals' 24-13 win before a crowd of 41,735 at Paul Brown Stadium.

Carolina (1-2) closes the preseason next week against Pittsburgh before going to Arizona in Week 1 of the regular season.

The Panthers' first-half performance against the Bengals' starters looked ominously like their showing in a 20-10 loss last week in Miami. The defense was gashed on the ground and through the air, the offense could not sustain drives, and quarterback Cam Newton was erratic at best in the passing game.

Newton completed 6 of 19 passes for 75 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. The No. 1 overall pick finished with a passer rating of 44.8, and completed just two passes to wideouts for 15 yards.

Bengals rookie Andy Dalton, a second-round pick who was the fifth quarterback drafted, was 11-of-17 passing for 130 yards and a touchdown. Dalton's passer rating was 107.5.

Newton fared better running. Newton was the Panthers' leading rusher with 49 yards and a touchdown on four carries.

The Panthers took an early lead after Cedric Benson lost a fumble on the Bengals' first possession. Newton, who had not converted a third down in the first two exhibitions, converted two on the scoring drive – including his 16-yard touchdown scramble on third-and-11.

Rolling right, the 6-5, 248-pound Newton cut upfield and spun off a tackler into the end zone for his first touchdown.

But Newton's accuracy remains a problem.

In three exhibitions, Newton has completed just 40.4 percent (21 of 52) of his passes. Of his four completions to wideouts, only one has gained more than 9 yards.

The Panthers hoped the return of Steve Smith would ignite their downfield passing game. But after a 9-yard catch on Carolina's first possession, Smith was shut out.

The Panthers tried to get the ball to Smith, but Newton couldn't connect with the player he joined for throwing sessions prior to training camp.

Cincinnati (1-2), which had scored 10 points in its first two exhibitions, racked up 269 first-half yards to erase the early deficit. The Panthers gave up 301 yards in the first half against Miami.

Andy D plays similar just like Clausen and they couldn't even stop him. Mostly all checkdown plays, but made few good plays going deep. No pass rush from the other DEnds( besides CJ and he was double team). No pass rush from the DT's, both McClain and Fua should sit and learn.

Gamble was taken to school by a rookie in AJ G. Gross needs to move to right tackle after this year along restructure his contract, move Othan to right guard. Mackenzy Bernadeau needs to be cut, horrible at every postion he plays on the OLine.

Is it offical to call Everette Brown a bust? Sure seems like it to me, can't stop the run. Lack pass rush moves( all he has is the crappy spin move. Try and see of you can't get a draft pick for him lol. 4-12,5-11, or 6-10( probably going to far) at best.

Boy! First Henne, now Dalton, looking like all-pros. And now the fact is, it's too late to get a good DT or CB that the Panthers desperately need. And Newton, he is what he is, a very good running back. I had been hopeful we could win 7-8 games this year, but nope, we've got pretty much the same team (thanks to paying out the wazoo for our core players) as last year except for Newton, Shockey and Olsen.

"Andrew Luck, Steve Smith, & A.J. Green. Now that would of been a good combonation!"

Qb are a hit and miss in the draft, have u even heard of Luck until last season? Any player could be a bust, stop treating him like the savior when he isn't even in the nfl let.

Can't you Cam haters just geted bored already and go away? We have given Cam no running game at all, we can't protect him, and our defense can't even get off the field against the bengal's second stringers. Cam is the least of our problems!! Dalton had all day to throw the ball, and a runing game that made us look pathetic.
Cam was clearly the best player on our offense tonight, it's sad but true. Imagine how many times Clausen would have been sacked tonight with our O-Line.
Until Otah and Schwartz get back, it's going to be ugly. Until Hardy gets back and we get a starter quality DT, it's going to get worst on defense, plus we're still missing Beason.
Bigger issues than Newton on this team, and please stop bringing up Luck, he's still in college and will never be a Panther, and even if he had played tonight, he would have struggled with no running game and an O-Line that looks like melted butter.

Outside of CAM,, is not the "CURE ALL" of the problems..............

However Cams Accuracy is F^&*I*G!! UNBELIEVABLE..
Jake D.... bad AND WORSE,, IS OH my god, NOT GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Smitty talking to a receiver(venting).. Not good!!!!!!!!!

I AM SCARED. As in not happy, not that I will not "Chop BLOCK YOU"!!

or this.... is SMITTY not what we thought he was from years ago "stretching the field"??????????????????????????????

Sure Smitty would blame everyone else!!!

Posted by: 10-4! | Aug 25, 2011 11:23:43 PM

I love Steve and i guess cam(plays better I love)!!!!!!

Posted by: 10-4! | Aug 25, 2011 11:25:29 PM

I will say this and "rip" as you may, But tonight as I watched! There is a problem with "The Delivery"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Holy Sh!t did Jake look like a genius!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: 10-4! | Aug 25, 2011 11:42:30 PM

Kenny is right on, the offensive line didn't look good at all they couldn't even give a good push for the best running back duo in the league and you would think that Cam scrambling would give the line more incentive but it didn't.

I hate to say it but Dan Connor is a liability unless with somehow switch to a 3-4 defense, because he can't keep up with running backs or receivers in passing situations. I would have rather seen Gaither instead.

Guys nothing will change unless Hurney gets the boot (hope you are reading Fat Cat). HYes we had the 1st overall pick but no 2nd rder thx to Mr. Genius and that is not how you build a team. I was absolutely shocked to see the amount of $$$ invested by the Fat Cat b/c it just made no sense to poor that much moolah with a team like this one. As much as it pains me Smitty should have been traded (like last year) to get as much value as possible for him for a team that a blind person knows it needs to be rebuilt. Newton's accuracy is def a concern but that is not the quality we brought him in for; however having said that why would you bring another inaccurate QB made no sense. The defense sucks and we should have made Darius or even Peterson that top pick and get an accurate passer on a later round to be developed this year. Instead Mr. Fat Cat there's no one responsible but yourself for allowing a clearly inept front office man like Hurney to run your team...to the ground. BTW DeAngelo should have been traded too, lack of cojones in that FO!

"The defense sucks and we should have made Darius or even Peterson that top pick and get an accurate passer on a later round to be developed this year"

How many dt selected in the top 5 ever pans out? PP is having a hard time even cracking the starting lineup for the Cardinals after DRC was traded. Sure seems like Richard M and Toler will be the starters there. I wished a trade down to get AJ G and then a QB in next year draft.
