How much will Cam Newton play against Pittsburgh?

Head coach Ron Rivera said he won't decide until after Tuesday's practice how much rookie quarterback Cam Newton will play Thursday night when the Panthers play their final preseason game against Pittsburgh in Bank of America Stadium.

Typically, starters don't play much during the final preseason game but it's different in Newton's case as he adjusts to the NFL without the benefit of OTAs and minicamps.

"What I'm hoping for is we got the extra day of practice this week so I'd really like to see how we come through tomorrow's practice," Rivera said. "We'll have some first bunch against each other and see what kind of tempo we get out of that. That will help gauge how much we play them.

"You always worry about the last one. We'll see."

Rivera said he expects second-year quarterback Jimmy Clausen to play against the Steelers, provided doctors give him clearance. Clausen suffered a thigh injury when he was hit from behind in the Miami game last week and missed a day of practice. However, the injury wasn't serious and Clausen has been sharp in practice.

"He got a few reps today and he looked pretty good actually. We expect if Jimmy gets the go ahead to play, we expect to play him," Rivera said.

   In other matters:

-- Rivera said offensive guard Duke Robinson suffered a concussion last week and is following the NFL protocol in his recovery. Robinson was sent home Sunday and returned to the team facility Monday but did not practice.

-- Offensive guard Mackenzy Bernadeau missed Monday's practice due to a turf toe while running back DeAngelo Williams was given the day off to rest a tender foot.

"(Williams) has had a really good camp," Rivera said.

-- The Panthers must trim their roster to 80 players by 4 p.m. Tuesday. Their 89-man roster includes cornerback Cletis Gordon and defensive tackle Ron Edwards who are on injured reserve, effectively putting their roster at 87. Under NFL rules the Panthers can't add receiver David Gettis nor center Zack Williams to the injured reserve list until after the final cuts are made Saturday.

Posted by: pacific nw | Aug 29, 2011 5:16:20 PM

Yea, Give Derek Anderson a chance, since the rest of our quarterbacks suck! (especially Cam)

Let Scam start the fourth quarter.

For everyone saying Cam ran a simple offense at Auburn is competely stupid. Auburn has one of the most complex offenses in all of college football. Give the guy time.

With out offensive line I just don't see how any QB can be succesful. Was watching Tom Brady Saturday night and did you see all the bad throws he mad because his line was giving him enough time? This is a wake up call for all the so call panther fans on here who want to criticize our QB's.

Robby, obviously you didn't keep up with flash card Newton in college.

Scam learning the system isn't the problem anyway. It's the fact that he's inaccurate passer and won't get much better. What he did in college won't work in the NFL, because he's not Vick fast, and Inaccurate. He's overhyped and was oversold.

Panther Fan are you serious????

I hope Newton plays every snap going forward. He'll have one of the worst seasons in NFL history, and he'll be exposed for what he is: a physical freak who can dominate college kids with his athletic ability, but who will be totally dominated by the elite ranks of the NFL when mental aptitude is required to excel.

The o-line will play better once they stop this stupid QB swap meet that is the preseason . Practice that we pay to watch!

I guess will see how fast cam can run. Because he will be doing it alot against Pittsburgh.

Posted by: MBP | Aug 29, 2011 7:44:50 PM

Michael, it sounds as though you would be very happy to see Cam fail. Why such a negative attitude? Which team are you rooting for? What makes you think Cam doesn't have the mental aptitude to correct his mistakes, get better, and compete with the elite of this league? Is it because he is black? Or do you know him personally?

Posted by: Willy | Aug 29, 2011 7:47:00 PM

Bagger logic: We don't care if the Panthers we love lose every game, as long as the Cam fails with them. "Our stated goal is to bring Cam down." Sound familiar?

Posted by: qdog112 | Aug 29, 2011 7:48:28 PM

Cam needs to work on his ACCURACY. Period. Most top quarterbacks throw with a 60% completion rate. You think Cam can improve on his current complete rate??? NOTHING right now shows he can...I sure hope he improves, otherwise, it's another in a long string of failed draft picks by GM Hurney.

I am just begining to wonder do the Panthers have any other players other than Cam Newton? In the last two games both our lines have been manhandled like middle school kids. Our secondary got burned like they were covered in kerosene. Our best player just had screws put in his foot....yet all we keep hearing about is Cam this and Cam that. Enough already!!! We have bigger issues.

Hello Andrew Luck; the 1st pick of the 2012 draft, made by the Carolina Panthers.

Posted by: riggo | Aug 29, 2011 8:03:47 PM

Cam will get better and so will the Panthers. There are a lot of new moving parts that will take time to operate well together. Success in the NFL is never instant, and true sports fans (ex. Steeler, Raider fans) support their team all the time. People need to stop getting on here to complain and hate like bama's- not Alabama. It's embarrassing.

Posted by: Willy | Aug 29, 2011 8:16:24 PM

I have to admit I was not in favor of drafing Cam #1 overall. I thought we should have gone defense. That being said, I have to hope the Panther Brass knows more about football then I do. They went "all in" with Cam and as a Panther fan, I am willing to play the cards I was delt. I'm willing to give him the benefit on the doubt. He didn't have the added practices and OTA's and is behind the learning curve. Let's give him a chance when the live bullets are flying before any of you never played the game middle age fat guys pass judgement.

I could be wrong but I doubt it! Make it a great day!
