Panthers' Jerry Richardson to Cam Newton: No tattoos, piercings

You heard it first from Tom Sorensen, but Panthers' owner Jerry Richardson shared his guide for personal grooming -- at least as how they apply to rookie quarterback Cam Newton.

Appearing on "the Charlie Rose Show" Richardson told a story of meeting with Newton at the owner's home before the Panthers selected him as the first overall pick in the NFL draft.

He described Newton as an "extraordinary young man" with "athletic ability unlike I've seen for quite a few years."

But, as he explained to Rose, "I wanted to look him in the eye, so to speak."

Richardson said Newton started to talk about his past, but the owner interrupted, saying, "Cameron … I think we need to talk about your future."

Richardson continued.

"Do you have any tattoos?"

"No sir, I don't have any."

"Do you have any piercings?"

"No sir, I don't have any."

"Good," Richardson said he responded. "We want to keep it that way."

The closed-cropped Newton then said he was thinking about letting his hair grow. Richardson's response:

"I think you have a very nice haircut."

Rose, the show's host, chimed in. "You sound like a Lombardi."

Said Richardson: "I think I sound reasonable."

Check out the full interview here.

And you can also get Scott Fowler's take on the whole situation in his "Scott Says" blog.

Oh good grief, is this really a big deal? The sports talk morons are having a hissy fit over nothing.

Some people are writing about how Jerry's a racist. To me he's paternalistic. I mean look at how much he loves Steve Smith even with all his tats! As long as there are old schoolers left, their view is that only drunken sailors get tatoos. As Jimmy Buffett sings, it's a "permanent reminder of a temporary feeling". People make the leap to racism way too fast.

Mr. Richardson is old school! Let me translate what he said! Be a man, have some class, self respect. the body is a temple of god! don't put poison in your body or ink on it! Our country is a mess because everyone wants to act like a clown and not a man!

Jerry is eliminating racism and will not allow racists to wear tattos or piercings and no dredlocks or ear lobe rocks or low pants on the ground. Thats out.

Also racist fans are not be allowed to enter the stadium with any of these banned items.

Newton is fighting for 3rd string QB with Pike in spite of his PR pre season starts although RR hopes for a bad injury to get a real QB in the slot.

Said Richardson: "I think I sound reasonable." Jerry you are very reasonable. My company has a policy for personal appearance that is very similar. I don't have a problem with this as long as they are feeding my family. Keep it up Jerry. This fan has got your back.

tattoos are desperate cries for attention in my eyes. same as fake breasts. both are for strippers and porn stars.

Ever seen UNC's basketball team ? They all looks like convicts and freakshows but its all over college basketball.
Roy Black needs to be like Richardson.

Tattos and piercings should be banned in all college and pro sports without exception.

This is what happens when you let the inmates run the asylum. Let them whine. Let them quit. You dont need that freakshow type anyway.

...thank you comment board for reminding me why I left NC. Old Republican men in khakis and knit shirts running the place, being cheered on by the next generation of republican men in khakis and knit shirts. Lame.

Tattoos and piercings are someone's own personal preference, which i dont really want any. Let each man/woman make his own decision. But if your employer says no you cant have it, it has to be across the board. Not on an employee by employee basis.

@ duke bball: i guess we should all strive to be like Duke's basketball team.
RIGHTTTTT!!!!!!!!

I'm sure if Cam got some of each JR wouldn't come down hard on him. Sounds to me if was some playful ribbing between the two. It's no different than my grandfather saying the same to me. They're old school and like to mess with the younger crowd about it. They don't approve but they'll love ya all the same.

We don't miss you sfinsf. Stay where you are and stay off the CHARLOTTE Panthers board.

I personally couldn't give a #*%@ what anyone thinks of tattoo's or piercings, or their feelings on the body. Unless it's a team-wide policy, it's discriminatory to Cam. Singling him out just makes Jerry look like an out-of-touch geezer.

Posted by: Bronx Mike | Aug 24, 2011 6:53:46 PM

Impressive, Richardson. Don't worry about whether he can play (apparently nobody on Mint's worried that he can't), worry about his image. Sweet.

"Unless it's a team-wide policy, it's discriminatory to Scam" lol

Cry me a river guy ...

Who the hell are you? You a joke. You a nobody. A waste of time.

The owner can do what he wants anytime he wants and nobody can do anything about it.

Now go play in your sandbox just dont let the cat cover you up ...

The policy should be no tattoos that are visible in uniform. Beyond that, who cares.

@roflmfao...So if you walk in your job and your boss tells you to abide by a different set of rules than every other employee, that's fine with you? Give me a break...you don't hold one person to one standard, especially pertaining to his own damn body, while allowing everyone else the freedom to do what the want. Am I so out of line for this thinking?

Posted by: Bronx Mike | Aug 24, 2011 9:31:31 PM

To clarify, I'm not a Cam fan and I'm not disputing Jerry's "right" to impose the rule...I'm arguing that it's wrong.

Servicemen vs prisoners; racism lives on because of only one of these. Let's just keep it Tarheels vs Duke. Or Vampires vs Likens.

Most importantly, I prefer winners over losers. Whether it's cam or jimmy, I want the team to win.

Not too hard to see the motivation behind his (J.Richardson) questions? You are about to make this YOUNG MAN the picture of your franchise. A solid well respected franchise. I don't want the face of my Franchise looking like Dennis Rodman. (No Offense DR but you are the poster child of the NBA) JR wants a clean cut Young Man to be that picture. I have no issues with it.

Posted by: davethepanther | Aug 25, 2011 1:39:13 AM

Face of which franchise? McDonalds? Burger King? Maybe a mug shot at the Post Office franchise?
If you are gonna play the system like a cheap 2 bit $whoredawg$ con artist then at least be proficient at the game & not a BUM plus learn to read and write.
