Newton will start second week in a row

Cam Newton will get another start, but Panthers coach Ron Rivera was not yet ready to name the No. 1 pick his Week 1 starter.

Despite struggling last week at Miami, Newton will start and play about three quarters Thursday at Cincinnati. Rivera plans to treat this week as a mock game week, and wants to see how Newton handles it.

“We've only gone through 31/2, 4 weeks of training camp,” Rivera said today. “So to rush into a decision would be kind of absurd.”

Coaches also want to see Newton improve his mechanics. The 6-5 right-hander completed 7 of 14 passes for 66 yards in the first half at Miami, but completed only one throw to a wideout and consistently misfired on longer passes.

But Rivera said he thought Newton made good decisions against the Dolphins.

“The next part is delivering the ball on time, hitting the receiver in stride,” he said.

Jimmy Clausen played the second half at Miami and was not much better. Unless Newton completely unravels against the Bengals, it still looks like he will be the starter at Arizona on Sept. 11.

HARDY BACK

Rivera did name a starter at defensive end.

Greg Hardy practiced for the first time since his motorcycle wreck last month, and immediately was declared the starter at the end spot opposite Charles “Big Money” Johnson.

Hardy, who badly skinned the left side of his body in the wreck in Tennessee, will start as soon as he's ready, Rivera said. Rivera indicated Everette Brown and Eric Norwood were better suited as edge pass-rushers and would be used situationally.

INJURY UDPATE

--Rivera is growing more concerned about whether middle linebacker Jon Beason will be ready for the opening game at Arizona. Beason, who has never missed a regular season game, has yet to practice due to tendinitis in his left Achilles. Rivera said the Panthers have three other linebackers that can play the position if Beason is not ready – Dan Connor, Omar Gaither and Thomas Williams.

But we'll make that decision once we get to that week,” Rivera said.

--Fullback Tony Fiammetta remains sidelined after sustaining a concussion against the Giants. The Panthers are waiting for the neurologist to clear him.

--Running back Jonathan Stewart returned from an Achilles injury, but tailback Mike Goodson is still out with his Achilles strain. Rivera said Goodson's injury is not considered serious.

--Offensive linemen Jeff Otah (hip) and Geoff Schwartz (hip) and tight end Gary Barnidge (ankle) were among the others who missed practice.

--Joseph Person

The article says Otah is out for a hip, so he now has a bad hip and bad knee?? Or is that a typo? Either way, it's looking like Otah may miss more games. Schwartz has also been out for a while, we've never been able to keep Oline guys on the field, so frustrating.

I hope Jeff Otah stays healthy this season and gets traded next year because he's been injured more than he played it was a waste giving up 1st pick,2nd and 4th that is why other teams like Eagles get better because of these stupid decisions teams make to trade for one player who is not even a pro bowl type.TERRIBLE!
I dont know what they will do with Gamble
he had 0 picks in 2010 but they do need to draft CB in 2012 with the 2nd pick

(written 10:30 am - Charlotte Observer)
What Cam Newton needs outside of an intact team, is REPs. He cannot get reps on the bench. He has to play - period. That's right - PLAY! Play through mistakes and successes. He needs continuity. The vets waiting for regular season don't help, but who can blame them? But that along with missing camp time, means that Cam has to play now to make up for missing REPs in camp.

We should play Cam and suffer any growing pain associated with that. Barring a total meltdown, like fumbles and INTs, Cam should continue to play. If it becomes clear that he can't do it yet, then and only then should we consider Clausen or Anderson.

Friday we had the ball all of 2 series in the 1st quarter. We were beaten in the trenches. That cannot continue. We have paid our OL too much for that to happen. Right now Cam is OK. He has not given the ball to the other team and has shown flashes of what's to come. I expect coach to name him tonight so he gets all the reps this week.

Last season we not only had a lot of rookies but we had a lot of injuries especially on the offense of the seasoned players. Once Moore got hurt it was up to Clausen to take a beating and do the best he could. No one gave Clausen a smooth path to start out in.
One thing for sure--it proves who and what you are. One thing Newton has to prove is that he can take it and do the work that is involved. He appears often to be shaky, confused and bewildered and its only preseason. Regular games is when the booing gets really bad and he has to be able to take it.

Its psychological plus physical--not just how big you are.

For those who don't know, Gary Barnidge has a broken ankle and will miss up to 12 weeks. The Observer should have already reported this....
And something that continues to bug me: we gave up a future 1, and a current 2nd and 4th round pick for Otah. The eagles used the second pick on Desean Jackson...ouch. They traded our first for OT Jason Peters...another ouch. So we ended up with a broken RT instead pf Steve Smith 2.0( D Jackson) and a pro bowl OT. Good trade Marty...

Can someone please explain how this team has so many Achilles injuries? My word, it seems as if half of the team has or had an injury to that area.

I disagree that Newton has looked shaken and confused as one fan posted. He looked very comfortable in the first game, and I never thought he looked shaken in the second game. Even if he is confused, that's to be expected considering the lack of an off season, and the fact that he's only had a few weeks of practice.
Newton has everything that you can't teach, he's the most talented QB we have and he will cause the most problems for opposing defenses, which is why he must play, unless he has a complete meltdown.
Keep in mind, a big part of his game will be allowing him to run the ball which we have not seen at all yet. Once he starts getting designed running plays, the offense will become much more dynamic because of him.
Like any other rookie, he needs time. Unfortunately, when he makes a mistake it will be magnified by the media as compared to other rookies. For some reason, there are those who seem to want him to fail. However, that only seems to motivate Newton.

To Tvan re: the achilles injuries... national writers are noting that there are a lot of achilles injuries across the league, which means that lack of conditioning due to the lockout may be to blame. Interesting article in the Denver Post re: the Broncos instituted no lifting and no post-practice wind sprints. The article stated that they have only 1 pre-season injury although more are reported on ESPN and CBS injury reports. Welcome back Hardy and good luck, Cam!!!!

I, for one, will be happy to see Greg Hardy back. I was impressed with his playing last season.

I think they should start newton, because we can all see him fall on his face and what a stupid pick this was. So maybe 2012 we can pick a real QB-- Andrew Luck

Rod, please shut the hell up!!

Posted by: joe clark | Aug 21, 2011 8:04:02 PM

@Bozo's Father.. Beason said just the opposite. He said that he worked so hard in the off season to be in shape that he overworked it. Without having the supervision of the team trainers, I can see how that might happen..

if panthers have 1st pick next year luck will just stay in school, and then we will be were we started

Posted by: tony p | Aug 21, 2011 8:37:55 PM

Of course, Cam will start. Richardson has no choice but to start him and hope to heck he makes it. If he does not start him, he will have little trade value coming off a pitiful performance like last week. And, this is the only hope he has of exciting the fans--play that number one draft pick that costs $22 million guaranteed. The one that won the Heisman. Also the one who played only one year of Division One ball because he was going to get kicked out of Florida for stealing and cheating multiple times.
This is going to be fun to watch.

Panthers needs to sign Leonard Davis, a former # 2 overall draft pick and a 3x pro bowler. He was cut by the cowboys due to declining play and lack of salary cap room. He is starter, a versatile player who can play both OT and OG, and will definitely help the team. We need to protect whoever starts at QB. And i think they need to move Sherrod Martin to CB opposite to Gamble. He will play much better than Marshall did. Then let Sean Considine, Kevin Payne and Jordan Pugh compete for a spot in Safety. I'm just saying....

andrew luck is the second coming of david carr!

Leonard Davis is signed by the Detroit Lions

Posted by: doa2 | Aug 21, 2011 10:18:06 PM

@ Doa2...Detroit Lions have not yet made their decision to sign Leonard Davis. He made a visit to Detroit Wednesday, few days after the team released a former 2nd rd draft pick Tackle, Tony Ugoh. So, I would like to think that Davis is still available. Hey, if he is not then lets sign this Ugoh guy, i can guarantee you that he will be a starter in front of Geoff Schwartz and Mackenzy Bernadeau

Josh,
The eagles did not use the panthers 2nd rd pick on DeSean Jackson, they used their own 2nd rd pick (#49 overall.) They traded the Panthers 2nd rd pick (#43 overall) to the Vikings and picked up the vikings 2nd rounder (#47 overall) which they used on Trevor Laws.
