Panthers claim Kentwan Balmer off waivers

The Panthers took a low-risk gamble on a former first-round pick from North Carolina to try to fortify their defensive interior.

Carolina claimed defensive tackle Kentwan Balmer off waivers Thursday, giving the Panthers a wide body to compete at a position that was weakened by the season-ending triceps injury to free agent pickup Ron Edwards in training camp.

Washington and Denver also put claims in on Balmer, according to a league source. But he was awarded to the Panthers, who will have priority on all waiver claims through Week 3 of the regular season based on their last-in-the-league record in 2010.

Balmer, 24, a native of Ashoskie in eastern North Carolina, will play for his third team in as many seasons. San Francisco drafted Balmer 29th overall in 2008, and traded him to Seattle before last season for a sixth-round pick.

Balmer, 6-5 and 315 pounds, started 11 games at defensive tackle and defensive end for the Seahawks last year and finished with a career-high 43 tackles. But he was released this week after failing to lock down a position.

The Panthers placed cornerback Cletis Gordon on injured reserve to make room for Balmer. Gordon has been out with a shoulder injury.

Balmer was linked to the UNC agent scandal last year when former Tar Heels player Cam Thomas said Balmer paid for a trip to California for Thomas and ex-UNC defensive tackle Marvin Austin.

need somebody... I thought Fua was going to be something special. Last week and this week he is getting "WORKED". I got nervous last week when I saw Bush pull him for a Yard, before Fua got him down.

True, we all knew this hours ago. Seems like there are plenty of other places to find current panthers news. This site is almost off my favorits list, been using this site since 1998 and I click it out of habit.

You haters are morons, Cam was one of the only bright spots of the night .. The only reason Dalton is playing better is because of a veteran coaching staff and an oline that is playing a hellavulot better than the Panther's oline right now.. They've run the ball spectacular against our Dline, MacBern is a revolving door .. Did you expect Cam to be Jesus Christ and levitate to the endzone ? That's what he would have had to do tonight w/ our oline play ..

Go ahead and give him a big contract too. Just like all the other LOSERS we have on the field. Money well spent Richardson...you tight wad!!!

You guys are morons.Just like my man said, cam was the only bright spot tonight. Dalton looks better bc there's no defensive pressure. Are defense is what needs help!

A.J. Green doing his thing. Too bad we didn't draft him instead of an inconsistent passing quarterback.

"A.J. Green doing his thing. Too bad we didn't draft him instead of an inconsistent passing quarterback".

Even if they did drafted Green, who in the hell would throw him the ball? Clausen? Mr. Captain checkdown. Derek A? He's not in the race to start at QB.

Ugh. The o and d lines are awful. Almost unwatchable except for Cam. He wasn't great but who could be working behind that line? Painful as a toothache.

Hey Rod, add the 40% completion for all of the preseason and you got yourself a deal. Newton didn't throw a pick, but I'm not sure how the way he was throwing the ball most of the night. He has a lot of work to do and I'm not sure I can sit through another 2-14 season.

Cam is a great running back!!

Posted by: Bozo's Father | Aug 25, 2011 10:52:37 PM

Well, let's see here, OPD...how about Clausen, who's outperformed Newton by a mile in EVERY GAME?

Posted by: Michael Procton | Aug 26, 2011 2:10:13 AM

how about something called patience. our fanbase is so fairweather that we don't give our young'ns time to develop before they are getting boo'ed and despised.

eli manning went 1-6 as a rookie.
freeman 3-6. elway went 4-6. vick was 1-1 and completed 44 % of his passes over 8 games. dilfer went 7-11 over his first 2 seasons. mcnabb 2-4. peyton effing manning went 3-13.

have patience, he's a rookie. have patience with clausen, he was a rookie. the difference here is that clausen doesn't have the same physical tools that newton has and that's why you get behind newton because the ceiling is higher. best case scenario with clausen is a solid backup or a mediocre to bad starter. newton has the possibility to be elite. it might not happen, but it definitely could. we saw that last night. he made a lot of good reads and just missed the throw. that's fixable. that's not him being unable to throw the ball, that's him being unable to handle the pressure at this point. he'll get used to it.

be a fan and not a critic.
