Panthers could be thin at tailback
The Panthers could be without two of their top tailbacks Friday in their second exhibition game at Miami.
Jonathan Stewart and Mike Goodson missed today's walk-through with Achilles injuries they sustained this week in Spartanburg. Panthers coach Ron Rivera said both are questionable for the Dolphins' game.
If the two can't play, Tyrell Sutton and Josh Vaughan would likely get the reps behind starter DeAngelo Williams.
Out for the game are linebacker Jon Beason (Achilles tendinitis), offensive linemen Jeff Otah (knee) and Geoff Schwartz (hip), fullback Tony Fiammetta (neck) and defensive end Greg Hardy, who has yet to practice following a motorcycle wreck last month in Tennessee.
Beason, a Miami native who has been linked to booster Nevin Shapiro in the University of Miami scandal, will not make the trip this week. Beason has yet to comment on the situation.
He is among a number of injured players who won't be going to Miami.
Cornerback Chris Gamble (hamstring, groin) is questionable. Safety Charles Godfrey, gone all week due to an excused family issue, will meet the team in Miami and is expected to play, Rivera said.
Tight end Gary Barnidge is scheduled to get X-rays on his left ankle today after injuring it during the walkthrough.
“His cleat got stuck in the ground and he went over top of it,” Rivera said. “Hopefully, at worst it's a bad, bad sprain.”
In other news …
--Rivera said again his preference is to name a starting quarterback before next week's exhibition at Cincinnati. Cam Newton will start Friday at Miami, with Jimmy Clausen expected to play the second and third quarters – as Newton did last week when Clausen started against the Giants.
--Rivera said next week would be a “mock” game week. The team will follow the same practice and meeting routines it will use during the regular season.

If they dont CUT Goodson before the season starts I'd be really surprised. Everyone makes him out to be great, but his is a HUGE liability. He had fumble issues coming out of college and they have never been corrected, it won't change now.
Sutton will do just fine at the #3 back and give Pilares or AE a chance at KR.

Man for us to have good RB's, they sure can't stay on the field long because they're so injury prone. They're barely out on the field to begin with! How do we keep having injury issues?!

Goodson will constantly be reminded to hold onto the ball. He is great in the open field and will remain the 3rd tailback.

Goodson is too explosive to be cut. However, if he remains afflicted with fumblitis, he'll see significantly diminished touches. He's easily on the team this year and has nothing to worry about in the short term.
I'd prefer he lose a step and protect the ball instead of running fast and loose.

Beason will not be making the trip to Miami, the team fears for his safety.

Not sure why Goodson doesn't wear those black rubbery tacky elbow/arm covers like some backs wear. They're made of the same material as palm of the WR gloves. It grips the ball, this seems it would have to help him. Anybody know why he doesn't wear these?

So with a 53 man roster i see us keeping 43 for the first and second string of all 22 Of and Df positions (except FB). Then add two kickers and a long snaper and you have 46. That leaves 7 extra spots.. I see us keeping one extra TE, RB, QB, and LB. So that leaves three spots left. Keep an extra DT and WR which leaves one spot on the roster. I would go with a LB or RB to finish the roster - whichever is better on ST.

its true that RBs have a certain amount of carries in them before they fall off. could be that stewart already used all of his up. not what i was wanting to hear at all.

Humm...Goodsen quoted yesterday he only remembers fumbling twice in college? I'm not sure about that! Tape 2 cans of stickum to his hands if that is even allowed any more??

How about Jeff Otah? I'm not sure he ever comes back...

cut the guy who will hardly play in the regular season? over a fixable issue early in his career? impulsive are we?
we don't exactly have other proven return men on the roster either. Unless Pilares or Edwards start returning kick returns at a threatening level, we would be starting every drive at the 20.

Goodson is a great asset to the Panthers and could very well be the best 3rd RB in the league. Cutting him would be a silly move. Last year, whenever the Panthers needed a spark.....who got the ball? GOODSON! Goodson will continue to run and make big plays as he is that type of player

What the hell is going on with all these achilles injuries? It's like a few years ago when we had so many hamstring issues. I seem to remember a trainer being cut after that season

Either he was told to bring every kick-off out of the endzone last week or he decided to do it himself to see the result. Either way the guy is determined to get the ball beyond the 20 every touch on kickoffs. I like what I saw. Fumblitis can be fixed. He's too good to let this bring him down. Fumbles Foster, not so much.

Is it me or does Stewart constantly have injury issues every year in the pre-season? I'm not giving up on Goodson yet, the guy was solid last year and does a lot of things the other RB's don't, like catch the ball. I'm starting to get worried with all the injuries.

goodson should stay #3 for sure i am more worried about stewart and his career long achilles problem dang he should have addressed this problem by now

Under the new CBA doesn't the league allow a 54 man roster with the 54th being an eligible emergency QB? How would this effect the roster with AE playing some wildcat? Does that mean we could have another roster spot if they said he was the designee? Or is the E-QB position still strictly regulated on game day and can't play otherwise. Just curious how this plays into the final roster mix...
