Panthers post-game report

Dolphins 20, Panthers 10

The good: The Panthers' fourth- and fifth-string tailbacks, Tyrell Sutton and Josh Vaughan, ran hard against Miami's second-team defense. Sutton had the Panthers' only touchdown and caught four passes for 29 yards.

Vaughan had the longest run of the night by a Carolina back. The fact that it went for 13 yards speaks to the lack of big plays in the Panthers' arsenal.

The bad: Where to start? The offensive line got little push. Receivers ran bad routes. Cam Newton was erratic and didn't get his feet set. Jimmy Clausen looked tentative and threw one pass that should have picked. And that's just the offense.

Defensively, the young corners were exposed by Brandon Marshall. Reggie Bush gashed the Panthers for big chunks of yardage. And -- save for Ugo Chinasa's sack of Matt Moore -- the front seven got little penetration or pressure on the quarterbacks.

The ugly: Had to be the too-many-men-on-the-field penalty that cost the Panthers a takeaway in the first half. The Panthers made Daniel Thomas cough up the ball and then recovered it near the goal line.

But they had an extra man in on their short-yardage personnel. It appeared to be undrafted DE Thomas Keiser, who ran off the field after the penalty. The Dolphins retained possession -- and though it took them three more plays -- punched it in.

Ron Rivera seemed especially irked by the penalty, and said it was the coaching staff's fault.

Well, it was ugly. It's also easy to see that the media is going to blast Cam every time he's anything less than perfect. He completed 50% of his passes even if you count the hail mary. Considering he had no off season and has been in camp for a whole 3 weeks, I think he's looked ok, especially considering the line is missing starters, plus steve smith is still resting and there's no #2 wideout. He's doing a great job find the TE's, he hasn't thrown an INT or fumbled. Give him some time.

Time to concider (if not already) to trade Sutton or Goodson for a decent CB. We cannot cover Roddy White and Julio Jones, or any other team with 2 decent WRs. Sutton and Goodson are both great players, but we have to make a move to stay competitive.

"Time to concider (if not already) to trade Sutton or Goodson for a decent CB"

What trade value do they really have? None in my eyes. Seems like they probably are waiting until cuts to get a cb. The cornerback class seems to be pretty deep in the 2012 draft.

I was more disappointed in the Defense more than the Offense. I understand it a vanilla game plan, but the line was manhandled. It looked like Corvey Irvin had on a pair of skates.

You cracked me up "oh man" its true though

Posted by: doa2 | Aug 20, 2011 6:45:17 AM

hey yo

"vanilla game plan" is racist !!!
it was actually a chocolate game plan homie and still sucked real bad.

NEWSFLASH !!!

Scam Alert !!! Its a BUST !!!!!

Aint even close !!!

Better use Anderson Clausen and Pike or risk 0-16.

ps. always do the opposite of the Distorter.

Newton needs benched and he needs to grow up. He acts too goofy out there on the field. Too much money in this game to not get serious. I fear Cam just don't have the stamina.

I am glad Clausen got us some points to say the least. Was good to see Matt Moore but guess it wasn't a bad idea to let him go. Seemed like Clausen did a lot better than Moore on the field.

Anybody else think that Henne seemed more mobile both inside the pocket and out than Cam?

While the media (ESPN) is having their wet dream orgasmafest over Cam, the Panthers need to ensure good, solid O-Line play or Cam will look like the 2nd coming of David Carr.

Last week's celebration is over, and the NFL is a business, not a playpen. So now is time for both Cam and Jimmy to settle down and play solidly. The problem is Jimmy still plays scared and Cam is learning. Cam has swagger and will learn the NFL, but will Jimmy ever stop being scared? Derek Anderson may have to start the first 4-8 games. The dude has NFL talent, a chip, and a career to resurrect. He's your best bet for consistency to start the season after tonight's game.

Still 2 more to go before reality though. We'll see.

Sure would of been nice to get a bonified #2 reciever with that #1 overall pick. (Especially since we haven't been able to get one, since Moose). Cam will never have the accuracy, because he's not a pure passer. He can only make deep throws, short dump passes, and screen plays. What a waste of pick. Fire Marty Hurney.

Why is Thomas Davis play not in the good? He was a beast on the goal line stand

Posted by: Tim | Aug 20, 2011 10:14:08 AM

If this preseason game is any indication of how this team is going to play, we are still in the running for Andrew Luck! I am convinced that Otah and Everette Brown are total draft busts, Newton is not ready to start (let Anderson), DT's and CB's are a disaster. We are at least 2 DL's and 2 OL's away from decent lines. I doubt we will be able to fill those voids from the waiver wire!

People, come on. The problem isn't the QB or the receivers. The problem is the offensive line. They are offensive, that is for sure. The QB has ZERO time. There are no gaps for the running backs. It is really really bad.

Posted by: the solution | Aug 20, 2011 12:22:51 PM

If Cam can ONLY make deep throws, short dump passes, and screen plays...then he's a better QB than the Panthers have had in three years.

The guy's upside is tremendous and all that hype about him being a character problem is turning out to be the biggest bunch of bull ever laid on a guy. No, he's not going to be Troy Aikman in year one, but then Troy Aikman was awful in year one.

Cam is way better early than I thought he'd be, coming out of only one year at Auburn. If he stays healthy he's gonna put us on the map, and AT LEAST the games will be exciting again. The haters need to remember last year.

Here come the sugar coated EXCUSES EXCUSES EXCUSES .. what a joke.

Hey, It is what it is. ITS A BUST.

Deal with reality. Cant pretend in sports espec with all that ungodly hype never seen before.

Coulda shoulda woulda ... yada yada yada and yakity yak dont come back ...

Some ostriches cant accept reality. Newton is a BUM and a DUD. It was all a SCAM like his whole life apparently & he is def NOT an NFL QB.

WR? TE? Its is only shot or else he will be begging for scraps in pappys church next yr or slangin nickle and dime bags on the corner this time next yr espec with no degree.

STICK A FORK IN HIM. HES DONE ...

The shortsighted fans are always the ones to yell bust right away. Part of it is due to a lack of real inteligence which is a neccessary ingredient of perspective. Same type of person that called Reggie Bush a bust, which he certainly was not last night.

That was a depressing game to watch and looked all too much like last year. The linemen on both sides were outclassed the whole game. Either Miami is real good (possible) or the Giants are real bad (due for a bad season). We look mediocre at best, but I wouldn't blame any one player for that poor showing. Anderson would not have made a big difference in the first half.

Posted by: Sportsdon | Aug 20, 2011 2:10:00 PM

What ignorance. Who called Reggie Bush a bust? Thats simply not true.

Bush was never referred to in that manner just the opposite. Are you serious? Hes the real deal & got the stuff. Nuttin fake there. Big EZ unloaded him only becuz of the Heiz and bad pub.

Why didnt the Panthies make a play for Bush? Why didnt they make a play for Vick? Oh yea , he fought rots & pits. Big deal. Oldest sport in history. Nobody got hurt.

You make your own bed & you gotta sleep in it. Nobody to blame but the man in the mirror your worst enemy.

Bottom line: Newton with his size and speed would make a top NFL WR unquestionably. He prob has good hands. Maybe another Jerry Rice TO or Michael Irvin. For real. Thats his slot & his calling. Not QB. Take a cue.

I am not a Cam "hater", I think he too needs to be given just a bit of a break--just like I still think Clausen needs to be given a bit of break. I thought Clausen did not look tentative and his mobility appeared to be a bit better than last year. He avoided the pressure pretty well, his passes, albeit some were a bit short-meaning he needs to look down field more, looked crisp and he did score. I am not saying that Clausen had his break out game by any means, but as most of you have said on here, the media is pushing hard for Cam to be the starter. Clausen, no matter how hard that guy is trying to improve cannot seem to do anything right in the media's eye. And as well, I really think they are just "shopping" Jimmy anyway. Cam is going to be the starter. They are not going to have their number one pick walking the sidelines with a clipboard. Just my humble opinion. Oh, if Cam is going to be the starter this year, he better learn to slide. He has not yet been faced with a Packer or Steeler like defense. Those guys go head hunting!!!!!! I hope its a good season--not expecting any playoffs, but hopefully a couple of nice, solid, fun to cheer for, games that wind up in the "w" column for us!

I rarely read these comments. I've just been reminded why. Mindless chatter from trolls that don't matter.

Posted by: jeff | Aug 20, 2011 3:47:07 PM

I disagree that the WR's were somehow at fault. It appeared to me that the game plan including going to the TE's. I saw the WR's open on more than one occasion over the middle where Cam decided to go to a TE that was in a deeper pattern. Im not going to trash the WR's like some, including Observer staff want to do. It appeared to me to be a matter of game planning to go to the TE's.

I have to say I love the comment about mindless trolls....what a dink!

I was against drafting Cam #1 (CB Peterson would have been a solid pick), but they drafted him... so if you're a Panther fan, you better hope it works out.

I think he'll have much more problems if started too early. We'll be blown out the first several games and fans will turn on him (which no rookie deserves). I'd make a goal of mid October. Let Jimmy get his fair shot after the raw deal he got last year. If he's not spectacular, let the #1 pick show what he's got. If both stumble then it's Anderson's show. Don't do to Newton what was done to Clausen last year... tossed to the wolves.

I think Cam will eventually be a good NFL QB. He NEEDS to learn to slide if he wants to lower the injury risks.

Newton had to set the Guiness Book of World Records as the worst performance in NFL history at QB by a rookie. TERRIBLE.
