Panthers Release Pike, Robinson; Schwartz on IR

The Panthers got down to their 80-player roster limit today by cutting ties with second-year quarterback Tony Pike and offensive lineman Duke Robinson while putting projected starting guard Geoff Schwartz on the injured reserve list.

The Panthers reached an injury settlement with Pike and put Robinson on the injured/waived list while adding Schwartz to the injured reserve list was an indication that his hip injury is more serious than first thought.

Additionally, the Panthers put tight end Gary Barnidge on the injured reserve list as a result of a broken ankle suffered last week. As expected, they added receiver David Gettis and center Zack Williams to the injured list that already included defensive tackle Ron Edwards and cornerback Cletis Gordon.

The team decided not to sign long snapper Chris Massey, who was brought in for a look last week.

The Panthers will have to reach their 53-player roster Saturday.

Rivera called the loss of Schwartz, "a tough one. We kinda hoped he would react positively to the treatment and it hasn't. We have to move forward unfortunately for this season and hopefully he can get it taken care of and be ready to go.

"It's just the situation that it wasn't getting better. They are going to continue the process. He's had some issues and trying to rehab it just didn't work."

In the absence of Schwartz, the Panthers will rely on Mackenzy Bernadeau and Garry Williams primarily at right guard with C.J. Davis also getting some time there.

Are the Panthers looking at Andre Gurode or Leonard Davis to fill in their holes on the O-line? I think they'd be foolish not to.

I'm a loyal Panthers fan, but DANG, their drafting strategy after the first round stinks..

surprised chris gamble and armanti edwards arent on that list. one would think rivera could get anybody to chase receivers and fumble punts.

I analyzed the Panthers-Bengals preseason game and Mackenzy Bernadeau stood out to me, he is TERRIBLE. He got beat so badly so often it's shocking he is one of our better options. If Otah does not come back strong (which more and more seems likely) this offense will go no where because the right side cannot block at all.

Another takeaway from the game was the strong play of DT Corey Irvin, compared to rookies Fua and McClain. I don't know if Irvin is out of shape and thus doesn't get the reps but from what i've seen he is our best DT option.

Oh, and we need Greg Hardy back, E.Brown and Norwood can't stop the run at all.

I LOVE Charles Godfrey's toughness, he is a keeper

GO PANTHERS

If Mack Bern is the starting RG, we are screwed. He is a horrible guard.

@DAR456

You are retarted. Cut the 67th overall pick after one season? When he's making a position change? Doesn't happen. This isn't madden

Berardeau played his best at LG compared to RG. I'm not sure if it's the matchup at DT, him pulling or just less comfortable between Gross and Kalil. I do agree he hasn't been impressive. Don't know if the O-line is struggling with this new blocking scheme but something has to be done! D-Will is on my Fantasy squad! I'm counting on him!

Edwards is a waste of a second pick. He'll never amount to anything. All you App State lovers out there need to wake up...especially you Daren Gantt....

I like when someone calls someone ELSE "retarted."

Can we place Jerry Richardson and Marty Hurny on that list? PLEASE?!?!?!?!

Coach made good moves.

When the Panthers went 12-4 three years ago, there were ZERO injuries on the O-line. Health has a major factor on team chemistry.

JLC you are so right, 73 and 91 are not NFL players. I will give Norwood a chance to learn DE. Panthers need a starting Nose, DE and Guard in the next week or we will be lucky to win 2 games.

I think part of the reason why Chris Gamble and our O-line is sucking so bad is because of the lack of competition in training. Steve Smith is washed up so im sure he's not giving gamble any challenge in camp. Then rememeber when Peppers and Jordan Gross used to battle ALL CAMP LONG!?!.. and Im sure that made the whole O-line better because they were actually comptiting in training. But with these horrible D-line we got now, the O-line probably thinking they're doing something untill they get to a real game and run into some real NFL defense and get expose time after time!
Bottom-line is we hired the wrong Head Coach.

Can we please stop the random AE "Hate Mail!" He has been continually lauded by Coach Rivera as being one of the top players in camp and was the Player of the Game vs. the Giants. He made one bad play (on a re-punt mind you due to a penalty, after he made a nice catch and run). This isn't the Armanti of a year ago. Remember he had NEVER retuned a punt or caught a pass in his career before coming to Carolina. He will be fine. I have never seen so much hatred for a local boy and hometown favorite. Must be some mind of agenda (WCU or UNC fans...?).

Glad to see you're giving up on a head coach with a lifetime 0-0 record.

For Heaven's sake, quit griping and let the team at least come out in a regular season game.

Posted by: KM | Aug 30, 2011 4:51:40 PM

Armanti will be a fan favorite for years to come so, you idiots out there get off his jock. Don't hate because App State fans love their team and former players because of the4 dynasty in Boone. He is a great person and very humble. Maybe you should watch this team play with an open mind and worry about the OLine & Dline and Chris Gamble's sorry butt instead of someone like AE that has worked his tail off to get better which is something taht a lot of other Panthers should've tried this past off season.

With the marked improvement in AE in this one year, I would love to see his game play next year.

We need a big time WR and CB.

Posted by: Danny | Aug 30, 2011 5:16:34 PM

I would love to see us utilize a bit of our remaining cap space and sign Andre Gurode and Alex Brown, just released by the Saints. Give us some additional veteran help on the offensive and defensive lines, two places we could really use some talent after some injuries. I'd imagine considering the way this off-season has gone, both could be brought in for one year deals as we work in our younger players.

Dear Mr. Jerry Richardson:

As a long time Panthers fan I think it is my duty to say you have totally screwed up our organization. You came out and spent a ton of money to show us that you are not cheap but sir you spent it on the wrong players. You should have never gave Charles Johnson that kind of money. He is a total loser and is already becoming a cancer to the team. Just check his Twitter account as he has been throwing it in peoples faces about how he got paid. He was even throwing it in Thomas Davis's face. You should have signed a Big Time C.B. and W.R. as we both know that Steve Smith is washed up and Gamble is a never was. I would turn this team around in a second.

Posted by: Danny | Aug 30, 2011 5:25:33 PM

@ Danny,

You're ignorant to think you're more intelligent and could do a better job than JR and/or Matt Hurney. Say you wouldn't have given Charles Johnson that pay day? 10.5 sacks a year ago minus a legit DE on the opposite side doesn't warrant that? I do agree that CB and WR are sore spots, but bottom line is the players have to play. Instead of blasting those in charge blast the lazy dudes who as some have keenly assessed have not had the competition in practice - either on the other side of the ball or pushing for their position - to make them go all out. Instead of being the twitter police for the Panthers, maybe you should check the reason why they paid him what they did.

Hey TP,

Don't think Ryan Kalil, Steve Smith, Capn Munnerlyn, Godfrey, Martin, Anderson, Wharton, etc. are too bad for non 1st rounders.

Posted by: magicman | Aug 30, 2011 6:19:41 PM

@ TP

I agree, though I wouldn't add Munnerlyn in with that group. Loved him at South Carolina, but hasn't shown me much... yet!

My opinion is that O-line and DT are the most critical needs right now! Especially the O-line, because they're more important to Cams improvement.

I like Charlie Martin and RJ Stanford. Godfrey is steady! Gonna be interesting come Fri - Sat to see the rest of the cuts!
