Post-game report: Bengals 24, Panthers 13

THE GOOD: Cam Newton showed off the running form that made him so dynamic at Auburn and that will extend a lot of plays at this level. Newton was the Panthers' leading rusher with 49 yards on four carries and a touchdown – a 16-yarder that gave the Panthers a 7-0 lead after a takeaway.

Olindo Mare banged all four of his kickoffs out of or deep into the end zone. He also was true on field goals of 42 and 38 yards.

Thomas Davis did not look like a guy coming off two ACL surgeries. The weakside linebacker had a game-high 11 tackles, including 8 solo stops. Davis moved well laterally and did a nice job finishing off ball-carriers.

THE BAD: Newton continues to have trouble getting the ball downfield to his wideouts. Newton threw to Steve Smith eight times and completed just one – for 9 yards.

As Newton said of his struggles to consistently move the offense (203 yards), “That's unacceptable.”

For the second week in a row, the defensive interior was gashed in the first half. Last week it was Reggie Bush. Thursday it was Cedric Benson, who had 68 yards on 16 carries.

The Panthers started both their rookie defensive tackles, and Sione Fua and Terrell McClain were getting rolled up often in the first half.

Other than Mare, the special teams were pretty bad. Too many penalties in the return game, and an Armanti Edwards fumble of a punt.

THE UGLY: Just when we thought Edwards had gotten over his punt-fielding woes, the former Appalachian State quarterback muffed another. Making this one worse: Ron Rivera had the Bengals re-kick to Edwards following a penalty. One play after Edwards' miscue at the Panthers' 12, the Bengals had a touchdown and a 21-7 lead.

Are you really watching the game? The Cincy running backs were routinely making it past the front seven. Number of tackles is not always a good indicator, because Thomas Davis made several tackles after the Bengal RB's were 7 or 8 yards downfield. Newton is throwing the ball poorly to receivers who aren't open anyway. The Offensive line is just giving OK protection. Severa of Cam's bad throws were when the DL was on him or coming fast.

it wouldnt matter if we could get a QB named Peyton Montana Brady...the rest of the team is just not getting it done --- yet. the play calling was vanilla which is understandable at this stage for severa reasons.

This is the second week in a row, a much-maligned QB has shined against the Panthers. The Panthers only got the ball for one possession in the first quarter. Lots is wrong and I was a huge optimist after the Giants game.

Cam's accuracy is an obvious problem. However, it doesn't help that the WRs never seem to get open. Also, we have what is probably the most overrated offensive line in the NFL. These guys rarely open up holes for the RBs and get pushed back into the QB on passing plays. A big part of the team's problem is that all of the money is going to average players. Guys like Gross and Kalil are being paid like they are at the top of their position but the reality is that neither is even top 10.

i thought cam would struggle that happens when you have a rookie qb in the begining but i honestly love the fact that hes not turning the ball over. that being said the offensive line and defensive line really blows. jordan gross wouldnt start for most teams im glad people are now starting to see this point.

Over hyped Newton SUCKED !!! Smith SUCKED !! As expected ...

Smith already trying to fight on the missed pass since he knows he is a non-factor & washed up. Hang it up !!!

Stop sugarcoating this god awful worst ever no passing confused inaccurate NON-QB who couldnt hit the broad side of a barn. Defenses saw him take advantage of the big gaps to run when recievers covered like it mattered. No more easy runningt. LBs watch game film & await that next time. Serious injury awaits.

Without doubt the absolute WORST #1 draft pick pretender ever scamming his way to the top with sleaze tactics that would make Al Capone shudder.

Poor Clausen Anderson & Pike. Its a rig for Newton killing the franchise.

Now fans know how terrible the defense was last yr for Clausen plus Smith telling the OL not to block or win to extort more millions out of JR. Half azzez need to be all fired !!!

Newton is a pure WR not a QB. He would win games with his speed catching passes since Smith has been done. Switch out & start Anderson ex-All Pro at QB.

Houston we have a problem ...

Time to cut the idiot media social engineering & play players in their best suited positions rather than trying to hype them somewhere they dont belong.

Anderson is an all-pro at perfect 28 yrrs old who can win 50% or more of his games immediately. Clausen is backup.

Trying to experiment with a non-passer in actual NFL game situations is no different than allowing a Cessna pilot to fly a 747 or a nurse to perform a heart transplant.

Aint gonna work knuckleheads ...

davis not worth the 8 million risk? are you effing kidding me? the guy lines up weak side and was making every single strong side tackle. our defense looked pourous but we are going to be really really good if we can find some studs out of the young'ns at d-line and corner. a young defense is a good thing. guys figure it out. guys get stronger. guys get better technique. guys like chris gamble go away.

Just once I would love to see a reporter have the nut sack to call out Marty Hurney for this pathetic group of players assembled on the field. The local media is running out of people to blame this debacle on. Won't be long before they turn on Rivera. Hurney was a sports writer so all sports writers give him a free pass and will never call him out for anything. It's truly pathetic and gutless. Hurney is a huge reason this team is so bad.
