Starters will play briefly against Steelers

After wrapping up the final scheduled practice of the preseason this morning, Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said he intends to use the starters for two series in the final preseason game Thursday night against Pittsburgh in Bank of America Stadium.

"We'd like to see things function where things are going well, we're communicating, we're doing the things we're supposed to. That's the biggest thing we want to take from it," Rivera said.

"I'm not concerned about the outcome obviously. I'm concerned about the way we play more than anything else. I want to see good communication, I want to see good operations and then get them off the field."

That means rookie quarterback Cam Newton will likely see limited playing time with second-year quarterback Jimmy Clausen likely playing the bulk of the minutes.

Rivera said offensive tackle Jeff Otah will play as will defensive end Greg Hardy, two projected starters who did not play in the first three preseason games.

With cuts coming Saturday to pare the roster to 53 players, Rivera said he will pay special attention to the defensive line and wide receivers.

Rookie defensive tackles Sione Fua and Terrell McClain struggled at Cincinnati last week and the Panthers will get their first look at Kentwan Balmer in a game situation since adding him to the roster last week.

Rivera also said he's been pleased with the young wide receivers in practice but wants to see them do more in game situations.

Defensive tackle, wide receiver and cornerback are positions where the Panthers could add players when teams cut to 53 on Saturday.

Also, Rivera said rookie wide receiver Kealoha Pilares is nursing a high ankle sprain suffered in practice on Tuesday. He did not participate in the walkthrough today and will be evaluated again Thursday.

"We're a little concerned about it," Rivera said.

Is chicken little Rivera showing his true colors only starting his BUM with the "starters" for one quarter ? Why only 1 quarter? Why is RR scared of the Mighty 6 time Super Bowl Champ Steelerz?

Why not play him 4 quarters & lets fan see what a real team does to pretender Qbs with a weak inaccurate arms. No safe TE dumps either. Can you say 40-zip? Steelerz D got something for "franchise" Scam too if he even thinks about running. Just keep the ambulance engine running.

Cant hide any longer ... gobble gobble gobble ... 0-16 ...

I love the hate you have for Cam... anyway on to real football talk, Cam will probably play through half time and.Jimmy in the third maybe fourth then Anderson. Don't judge our team off preseason play.. we are evaluating.. obviously we will run a lot more in real games and you never show your hand in preseason. Of course we will struggle as a "whole team" not just Newton. New defense, new offense, new coaches, new head coach, new QB. Can't expect everything to jell instantly.

Shouldn't you be in school learning something about grammar?

Scam is a joke. Rivera is a joke. And it wont even be one quarter if you read closer. It said only briefly. That may just mean one set of downs.

Wow. I have never seen such haters....Do you remember what the last few years were like with John Fox and the lamest offense?? Give this new scheme and team a change before you go bashing on them. HATERZZ

Didnt these same douchebags trash Delhomne Fox Richardson and Clausen unmercibly past 2 yrs?
So why are they whining?

@ Actual and Real...the idiot "Yellow Detector" thankfully isn't a Panther fan. He's a wannabe who probably will always be a fan of whichever team is on top, and right now the Steelers are one of the best. He gets off on spouting his fake superiority as if he actually plays for the steelers. My bet is he used to be a Cowboys fan. Then a Falcons fan. Same sort of below-100 i.q.

they bashed fox going INTO last season and he was one of the winning-est coaches going into last year.

panther fans lack intelligence as a whole.

Biggest questions are, will Ben be out in Charlotte that night serving up roofie coladas and will Hines have a DD this time? Model franchise my @$$!

You haters are out of this world. No body wants to hear your negativity and ignorance. If you're not gonna come on here and support then go on espn and post your comment. This is a FAN site to support our team, it's not a site for impatient dumbasses to go on spew bullshit. I speak on behalf of panther nation when I say go SUCK A DICK AND CHOKE ON IT.

Yeah I bashed Fox and thank god "fox had to go"!!.

However I am more than excited about this season and the future without John FOX.

Some People are not nearly as smart as they think they are. Just because you can make negative comments about other "posters" does not make you smart!!

Winningest coach-- Some people are emotionally attached to indidviduals and cannot be objective.

Everyones knows what Big Ben can do you knuckleheaded idiot. Hes the best. Thats been proven years. No doubt. He is a neanderthal. A rabid beast but hell on wheels & a deadly passing machinegun.

Fans of the Panthers still do not know what this one hit wonder at Auburn can do because up to this point he has shown not a damn thing. He has sucked badly. Def not of NFL starter quality.

Rivera does not want to see Scam go 0-3 with a 3rd blowout. He is being disingenious but everyone knows he and the disturbed at the Disturber picked the starting QB back in Jan 8 mos ago.

Clearly RR not only fears another astrocious performance but also fears a serious injury by a bone crushing ferocious terminator defense machine.

RR taking a such a wus lame weak pathetic puny gay waterboyish cowardly approach to being a HC.
Makes some wonder if Scam or Rivera are up to the task at hand.
Gutcheck time.

It is common knowledge starters barely play in the 4th game. This game is to see who makes the practice squad or special teams and who hits the streets. It has no other purpose for either team.

Posted by: Sportsdon | Aug 31, 2011 5:27:18 PM

Not worth my time to drive a hour to go see the starters for a couple of series and then put in the rest for evaluation! I'll just stay home, watch the game on TV and get rested myself for our first home game against Green Bay!

Go Panthers!!!

First off, lets ask Aaron Rogers how sweet big ben is since he's got the belt and he went through the steelers to do it. no guts no glory, when did you start watching football? do know this is still preseason? Do you know that how things have been ran in preseason since the league probably started? No Ron Rivera isn't scared to play him because of a blow out. in fact if you learned how to read and read this article, you would of noticed this Ron Rivera quote. ""I'm not concerned about the outcome obviously. I'm concerned about the way we play more than anything else. I want to see good communication, I want to see good operations and then get them off the field."

You don't need to be doing any gut checks, you need to go learn how to think for yourself. Not recite the same things I hear on tv from people that only watch highlights. Let me break down why Cam Newton has struggled, It's called being a NFL Rookie QB and not having played a real down of your career yet. He's barely seen over a games worth of action in PRESEASON, meaningless games. Not having a lot of valuable weapons to use because a lot of vets don't play in these meaningless games. he's played behind a make shift, banged up offensive line and no steve smith. Your comments make you sound like an idiot that's never watched a game in your life. You sound like my girlfriend when she picks teams based on their uniforms and team names. So i've come to the conclusion that you have brain damage or you've been drugged by your hero big ben and is bent over a table ready to feel just how great big ben really is and what he excels at.

#1 You're an idiot moron by default because u took the time of day to come on here , boast about the steelers "has-beens" and their fearless loser roethlisberger, and then bash a new coaching staff, team and rookie QB that hasn't even played 1 regular season game, let alone had the luxury of play action w/ little or no run game due to injuries on the online/adjustments to a proven offensive scheme.

#2 anyone with a half a brain would realize all of the above and keep their stupidity to themselves, but you failed on both accounts.

#3 have a nice day
