First quarter blog: Panthers 2, Jags 0
The Jaguars came out in two-deep zone coverage, forcing Cam Newton to throw into smaller windows.
Newton started slowly, completing just 3-of-9 on the first two series.
But the Panthers played a little John Fox, field-position football. The Jags' first two drives started at their 10- and 6-yard lines.
Pinned deep on the opening series of his first NFL start, Blaine Gabbert was sacked by Greg Hardy in the end zone for a safety, putting the Panthers up 2-0 midway through the quarter.
The Panthers sacked Gabbert twice on the Jags' first two possessions (Charles Johnson had the other).
As a result, Carolina outgained Jacksonville 88 to minus-1 in total yardage in the opening quarter and had a nearly eight-minute edge in time of possession.
