Jimmy Clausen inactive for Panthers; Max Jean-Gilles released

GLENDALE, Ariz.

The quarterback who ended last season as the Panthers' starter will begin this one on the inactive list.

Jimmy Clausen did not get a jersey for today's opener against Arizona.

The move was expected with the NFL's decision to let teams dress 46 players regardless of position. (In previous years, it was 45 plus an a third, emergency QB).

Still, it's quite a drop-off for a player who started 10 games as a rookie, losing nine. Clausen's lone victory came against the Cardinals, who have QB John Skelton among their inactives today.

That means both quarterbacks from last year's Carolina-Arizona game are inactive.

The rest of the Panthers' inactives: FB Jerome Felton, LB Jason Williams, OT Lee Ziemba and two injured rookies -- WR Kealoha Pilares and CB Josh Thomas.

Because the Panthers released G Max Jean-Gilles -- leaving them with 52 players on the active roster -- they only had to make six inactive.

With Ziemba down and Jean-Gilles, the Panthers only have seven offensive linemen up today. G Mackenzy Bernadeau and rookie G/T Byron Bell are the only reserves.

Richie Brockel, who plays fullback and tight end, is the only fullback dressed.

Put this elsewhere, but if the Tampa Bay score holds up, and the Panthers manage to pull out one of the more winnable games this season, we could spend a week in alone in first place! (No, I don't think it will last. But funny!)

Is the broadcast going in and out for anyone else?

Cam will be a bust. More to QB than running around. He is ranked 32nd among pro QB's. He might be a bust.

32. Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers

Analysis: Newton's mechanics functioning in an NFL offense have been average. The Panthers will live and die by Newton, who came out of nowhere to become a legend at Auburn.

Thankfully the TV is fading out. Looks like the Panthers will get another chance at Luck afterall. Enjoy the year.

If Luck really wanted to come here he would have came this year. He does not want to be a panther. One of the reason he stayed in college.

The defense is going to put to much pressure on the offense. Which is going to be too much for Newton to handle as a rookie. Not his fault.

Why didn't we try a 52 yard field goal??? We just had a 15 yard net punt from the 35. I don't understand the thought process

@ Thug, do you know what you are talking about?

If anyone is complaining about Cam's performance they should stop being a Panther fan. This is the best half of football I have seen from the Panthers in 2 years.

If you don't like it, cut off the TV and go outside.

Wow, Joe and Ron: You are now allowing comments like "teemac" at 5:40 PM? The C.O. must REALLY be in trouble to allow crap like this.
