Panthers claim Darius Butler

The Panthers have claimed third-year cornerback Darius Butler, who was waived by New England earlier today.

The Panthers will have the first waiver claim for the first three weeks of the season because of their NFL-worst 2-14 finish in 2010.

Butler, a second-round pick in 2009, started the Patriots' first two games last season before getting benched. Butler, 5-10 and 180 pounds, had three interceptions as a rookie, including one he returned 91 yards for a touchdown.

The Panthers have been looking for cornerback help, but first-year coach Ron Rivera said the players available after the weekend cuts were not an upgrade over those on the roster.

Veteran Chris Gamble, who was benched by John Fox last season, and Captain Munnerlyn, a seventh-round pick in 2009, are Carolina's starting corners. R.J. Stanford and Josh Thomas, a rookie claimed off waivers from Dallas, are the backups.

Butler is expected to practice with the Panthers on Wednesday.

Decent pick up but what about the pathetic dline aka The worst dline in the history of football? I swear that hillbilly Marty Hurney has no clue what he's doing. I bet he's a republican

What's up with Pat Williams from the Vikings. Is he available? And isn't it Kevin Williams, not Pat who's up for a suspension?

I'm surprised the Panthers haven't had DT Tommie Harris in for a workout. He has had some injury issues but when he is healthy he is a probowl DT.

This pickup could be a missing piece the secondary puzzle. Butler is a good corner, just didn't pan out for the Pats. Ready to see how he works for us!

Seen this coming. Good pick up! This should be an interesting addition. Captain has a PrimeU teammate now. They should play well together!

Tommie Harris is a pro bowl DT when he's healthy?

Lee Roy Selmon is a Pro Bowler too when he's healthy, but you might have heard... he died!

Nice pick up,but we need 2 qaulity DT.

No...Marty is definitely a democrat. Only a democrat could do their job so poorly for so long and still manage to keep their job!

Pat Williams will serve a 2 game suspenion as well once a team picks him up. Not surprise that they would claim Darius Butler.

Wow...so we didn't pick up Hanson or others because "we've already got that guy." How the hell is Butler (who got beat out by undrafted Kyle Arrington in New England) any different than that guy?

@Smith. Let's see... historically high unemployment, record debt, record budget deficit, pathetically weak economy, US bonds reduced to AA status, US dollar plummeting in value. Yeah, that puny, chain smoking democrat who can't speak without a teleprompter is doing a hell of job, huh? BTW.....you can't get any more hillbilly than Bill Clinton or Jimmy Carter.

I have a political compromise I'd like to suggest if both sides will admit (dems and reps) that they are both equally f-ing up this country! Maybe we could get back to talking football!!!!!!! you're all idiots!

@ Procton. I agree with your comment. It makes no sense to me neither. To be honest, a few of the moves made and some of the things said by Rivera thus far are not helping me build confidence in his ability to lead this team. I hope I'm wrong.

Nice pickup! Go Panthers! Lets do this!

Dont worry about the Dline, im sure RR and SMot have some 3-4 packages ready for use this weekend. Connor, Beason, Davis, and Anderson all on the field honey!

Posted by: Dusty | Sep 7, 2011 12:16:20 AM

@Dusty. The only problem with that is none of those guys have the size to play 3-4 linebacker.

Posted by: PantherFan34 | Sep 7, 2011 12:30:35 AM

We could use McClain, Fua & Neblett...only praying they don't run lol

Posted by: Nate | Sep 7, 2011 12:42:12 AM

"@Dusty. The only problem with that is none of those guys have the size to play 3-4 linebacker."

I think it can be done with C. Johnson, Fua and McClain plays front and Hardy, Beason, Connor and either ( Selvie, Norwood or Davis) plays LBs. Just saying though...

Procton, good point. I think is very obvious that Rivera is dim-witted, and that he and Hurney must not communicate at all. Hurney should program Rivera to say what he wants, as Richardson does with Hurney.

What's really pathetic is that we as a fan base have been reduced to getting excited about picking up trash players from other teams. Pathetic. Thanks Marty.
