Panthers hold off Jaguars 16-10

Greg Olsen caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Cam Newton with 4:20 remaining, providing the Carolina Panthers with the winning touchdown in a 16-10 victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday at Bank of America Stadium.

The victory gives the Panthers (1-2) their first victory of the season and the first of Ron Rivera's career as a head coach. Olsen's touchdown catch made it 14-10, and the Panthers increased it to 16-10 when they went for two -- with Newton again connecting with Olsen. The Jaguars (1-2) tried to drive for a winning touchdown, but Jacksonville ran out of time.

The Panthers play at Chicago next week.

Very poor officating that could have cost us the game on 3 very bad calls. I luv Cam Newton the deattth but if he can't get his accurracy together we should bench him and play Anderson and let Newton develop working on his accurracy and etc until he's polished

Now we know who got the better QB and it wasn't us.
Newton has got to stop running all over that field.

u guys are sad

A QB with accurracy in the system we run would be outstanding! It always seems to be someone open but sometime we don't connect. Cam we got love for you here, but please get it together. This game shouldn't have been close. Nice job DEFENSE!!!!!

As a professional athlete in the NFL you shouldn't be having major accurracy issues if you have made it this far. Its the NFL!

All of you idiots shut up...before it was, he can't win....now he won and you are still bitching...jeesh

Yeah...Jacksonville got the better quarterback...the one who can't hold onto the ball! LOL Some of you making comments are funny...and I bet you're not even trying.

Good games Panthers. Cam struggled a bit and that is to be expected...but when at the end of the day he drove the team for the winning score....it's called growth people (@ ryan, mac and tom)....on another note thought it was some spotty play to many QB draws...gotta run stew and williams in those instances

I was not a fan of drafting Cam Newton, but everyone who posted above me is an idiot. He's young and he's learning. He had two very solid starts before this, but he is still young and still learning. Bottom line, the team won! Be happy and stay tuned for next week. There are going to be ups and downs. You have to support your QB and not panic after one game, in which he won.

Don't include me with that bunch, Sean P. We'll have words about that.

that goes for me also Sean P

Considering we played in a monsoon, I think he was fine. The coches and former players on CBS post game show raved about his 4th qtr drive with Olsen. I hate haters too.

You guys are funny. If we go by your suggestions about benching Cam Newton, then New England should bench Tom Brady for throwing 4 picks. What a bunch of losers!

I'd take an ugly win over a great loss anyday and instead of whining like a bunch of high school kids, why don't you offer some congrats and constructive criticism?

Did Cam miss some wide open throws early in today's game? Yep. Did Cam play lights-out in the fourth quarter, running and throwing the Panthers to their first win? You betcha! Cam haters will focus on the early misfires. I'm a Cam fan and focus on what's important. Cam, after failing to bring the Panthers from behind late in the fourth quarter against the Cardinals and Packers, finally got over the hump today. Carolina drafted the right quarterback, all right.

If your a Panthers fan hating on Newton, then you have some serious issues. Newton played well enough to get the win when we needed it. IT WAS A MONSOON OUT THERE! Cut him some slack he's a rookie and he's doing really well! HELLO: Ton Brady through 4 INT's today...

@ Tom
"Now we know who got the better QB and it wasn't us."

Ummm, Cam had a higher completion percentage, more completions, more yards passing, more rushing yards, less turnovers, and a higher QB rating. Oh yeah, AND WON THE GAME. Where are your numbers to support your above statement?

Posted by: bboryla | Sep 25, 2011 6:50:44 PM

Some of you are hilarious....I'm mean seriously, Cam got us a "W," played turnover free ball, made the go-ahead scoring drive to perfection, and did it in this pathetic weather, and you're complaining and moaning?

I remember the days when J. Delhomme passed for over 200 yards, had a TD and no INTs, and everyone praised him and would give him an "A." And, when Jake threw a 1 TD, 2 INT game, we'd say that was a mediocre game. Gimme a break!

Wow, sure is a lotta HATE for the Panthers on their OWN blog. SMH......

fairweather city right now. this is the same city that used to sell out the coliseum for some of the worst hornet teams ever the first several years. not just sell it out but actually show up and cheer like crazy. it's a horrible sports town in 2011. and has been for about 7 years. 2003/04 was the last sign of life.

as for the game, horrible to see steve smith unable to break muhammad's record at home. almost guaranteed to happen next week.

The Panthers won.........That's all that counts.

Posted by: Todd Gardner | Sep 26, 2011 1:25:59 PM

I think the Panthers struggled on offense because couldn't control his passes but that happens sometimes. As long as he can bounce back the Panthers should be fine. The running game should be coming back week up until the bye. The Panthers have been know to have a slow running game that builds momentum however there is a new coaching staff so we will see.
