Panthers cut DE Brown, four others; add DT Harrison

The Panthers are continuing to rework their roster, releasing defensive end Everette Brown and four other players today while adding five players claimed off waivers, including former Chicago Bears defensive tackle Marcus Harrison.

In waiving Brown, it brings to an end a disappointing two-year run for the former Florida State standout. The Panthers traded their 2010 first-round draft pick to San Francisco in order to draft Brown in the second round but he never became the dominant player the Panthers had hoped. He had 3.5 sacks last season but had struggled during the preseason.

The Panthers also waived guard Bryant Browning, defensive end Thomas Keiser and wide receiver David Clowney. The team also terminated the contract of safety Kevin Payne.

In addition to Harrison, the Panthers also added wide receiver Seyi Ajirotutu (San Diego), defensive back Stevie Brown (Oakland), defensive end George Selvie (St. Louis) and defensive back Josh Thomas (Dallas) off waivers.

nice pick Hurney! Now we've picked up a S, DE and CB. What about that soft interior on both sides? We need a DT and a guard BAD!

"We need a DT and a guard BAD"

They signed a dt in Marcus Harrison, unless you want Pat W as well? If so, i'm down with that. Hurney let again waist another high draft, especially trading the 2010 1st rounder to get Brown. I'm in shock how he still the gm of the team. Clausen, AE, Norwood will be next if they don't show a thing or 2 in the next year or 2.

how in the world has Hurney kept his job....

Sorry for the double post.

@bull123

Hurney is a yes man to JR, any gm not name Matt Millen would be an improvement over Hurney as gm. Trading future 1st and 2nd has set this team back.

The Panthers are showing interest in Alex Brown, at best a rotation player. But would be a solid edition to the team. Just take him out of 3rd downs because he's a mediocre pass rusher.

pretty sure harrison is a DT

He did get a DT. Harrison claimed off waivers from the Bears. I would have claimed Cox (CB Denver) too, but there may be something to the sexual assault charge he is facing.

I am glad they let Brown go. He will be a force I think, in the league but as a pass rushing LB in a 3-4. He is just not suited to play a 4-3 DE. Good luck to him.

wonder what is really happening...maybe coach Rivera is telling JR that all the players Huney picked all suck & he is cleaning house

Can you read? Marcus Harrison, defensive tackle...its start. We're also in pursuit of Pat Williams, which would be huge. Granted we would have to deal with two-game suspension. But it'd be worth it. We're only a few hours into this waiver period. They cut alot of players at the DB and DT positions so you'll know exactly where they'll be picking players up. We'll see what they do.

Wouldn't be surprise if he really told JR that, would have liked RR being named coach a year earlier. For one to have continuity, 2 better draft selection instead of undersize, projec player etc.

Forgot to add RR convincing Hurney not to trade away future 1st and 2nd round picks. Oh btw David Clowney, Thomas Keiser,S Kevin Payne and G Bryant Browning were cut as well.

How the heck does Marty Hurney still have a job?

Why part ways with David Clowney? I just don't understand these guys! A good #2 receiver trust me!

I am very pleased with the teamn cutting Evertte Brown and David Clowney. I am especially pleased with the waiver of David Clowney aka Mr Tweet A lot. During the offseason Clowney twitted a lot of useful post that lead me to believe he was more focused on making plans with random women versus making plans with teammates to get his craft together. I say good riddance to Clowney and his questionable work ethic.

Everyone is quick to bash Hurney for the horrible trade that brought us Brown for a future number one pick.

Here's a news flash that everyone is quick to forget...the Panterhs received TWO picks in that deal and the second selection was Mike Goodson.

I would rather have seen them pick up Brandon Tate at WR than Seyi Ajirotutu (San Diego); at least Tate can be a return man. We're too thin in the secondary for Munnerlyn to be returning punts.
They need to pick up that CB from Philly...

David Clowney shouldn't have been cut. We will struggle again at WR.

Give Hurney a break we still have every 1st round pick since 2003 which is pretty impressive. He's made mistakes but so does every GM and its not all his fault.

"David Clowney shouldn't have been cut. We will struggle again at WR."

What has Clowney done in a meaningful game to be kept? Had an okay pre-season, still lacks route running etc. He's a special team guy at best, always been here or with the Jets.
