Rivera: Playing well not good enough

Ron Rivera had no problem with what linebacker Thomas Davis said Wednesday about being "tired of talking about Aaron Rodgers" and that the Panthers "should come away with a victory" Sunday against defending Super Bowl-champion Green Bay.

Rivera said Davis was not disrespecting the Packers, just pointing out the Panthers -- despite a young team and last year's 2-14 finish -- should not be satisfied with close losses.

Davis also expressed his dismay with fans who were excited about the Panthers' showing in a 28-21 loss at Arizona, which was 5-11 in 2010 -- including a loss to Carolina.

"Don't be surprised when we play good, I guess is the message he's getting at," Rivera said. "Yeah, it's great people want to support us for that. But the bottom line is we didn't win. We take losing very personal. Thomas takes it very personal. ... Just being good or exciting is not (enough)."

Rivera also liked Cam Newton's reaction after the Cardinals' game, in which he broke Peyton Manning's record for passing yards by a rookie in his debut.

"Cam said it best after the game: This feeling's not very good," said Rivera, the former Bears and Chargers defensive coordinator. "It isn't. It sticks with you. I've been on a lot of winning teams lately. And when you lose, it's tough. I have six years in a row being on a winning team, and this is going to be a work in progress. I expect to be on a winning team this year."

Gotta love the confidence from Rivera, whose last losing season was with Chicago when the Bears went 5-11 in 2004 -- two years before making it to the Super Bowl.

In other news ...

--Rivera left open the possibility that right tackle Jeff Otah (concussion) could play Sunday against Green Bay. But undrafted rookie Byron Bell told reporters earlier in the day coaches had told him he would make his first career start Sunday in place of Otah.

Otah declined comment Thursday, saying he had been told not to talk to the media.

OK, so delusional was obviously among the things Richardson was looking for in hiring a coach. Check. Explains why the first eight interviews landed him not so much as a sniff.

Has anyone noticed that Mike Goodson does not make plays in crucial situations. I actually think that he is a risk to fumble everytime he touches the ball. Why on that last game drive was he even in the game, instead of Williams or Stewart? That is the kind of in-depth reporting we need during the week. My two cents: trade Goodson for a defensive back and pick up a good back-up RB off the waiver wire.

Is Michael "I pucker my lips for proctologists" Procton at it again? The ultimate hater and know it all nothing and why I rarely post here anymore. I imagine him as a 18 year-old fat boy who has no redeeming social skills and alternates between all male porn sites and the sports sections of various publications while pooping his zits and picking his nose. You go kiddo.
