Goodson inactive; Panthers will have new returner

Ron Rivera revealed Friday that Mike Goodson would not return kicks against the Saints.

It turns out Goodson didn't even get a jersey.

Goodson, who missed a practice with an illness last week, was the most interesting name among the Panthers' seven inactives. The others: QB Jimmy Clausen, CB Josh Thomas, LB Thomas Williams, DT Andre Neblett, OT Lee Ziemba and DT Frank Kearse.

Goodson is the No. 3 tailback behind DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, and has not been getting any action on offense. He was used as a third-down back last year under John Fox.

Rookie wideout Kealoha Pilares or safety Jordan Pugh will handle kickoff returns. Pugh averaged 25.5 yards on two returns last week against the Bears after replacing Goodson, who was pulled when he mishandled a kick.

LB Omar Gaither is expected to get the start at the weakside spot over Jason Williams. Gaither is more adept in coverage than Williams, and is expected to see the bulk of the reps against Drew Brees and the Saints.

Both of the Panthers' new additions – DE Antwan Applewhite and S Jermale Hines – are active and expected to play on Carolina's struggling special teams.

I would like to see Pilares get more of an opportunity to run back kick-off. The team needs to utilize his speed.
