Halftime blog: Falcons 14, Panthers 10
The Falcons took a 14-10 lead into halftime after Brent Grimes intercepted Cam Newton in the end zone with 30 seconds left in the second quarter.
Newton was trying to go to Steve Smith, who appeared to have a step on Grimes. But safety William Moore deflected Newton's pass up in the air, and Grimes out-jumped Smith for the pick.
Matt Ryan guided the Falcons on an 80-yard touchdown drive, that he capped with a 1-yard scoring toss to fullback Ovie Mughelli to put Atlanta up 14-10 with 3:43 left before halftime.
For the second time in the half, the Panthers were hurt by a pass interference penalty that gave the Falcons a first-and-goal at the 1. This time cornerback Chris Gamble was whistled for interfering with Harry Douglas on a play when the Panthers also had too many men on the field.
The Panthers stopped Michael Turner and Mughelli for no gain on first and second downs before the Falcons went to the air. Backup linebacker Jason Phillips was in coverage on Mughelli's touchdown catch.
The Panthers took a 10-7 lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by Jonathan Stewart with 10:13 remaining in the first half.
Newton hit tight end Jeremy Shockey for completions on back-to-back plays early in the drive, the second of which was good for 29 yards to the Atlanta 28.
Then on third-and-13, Cam Newton threw across the middle for Legedu Naanee, who made a diving catch for a 17-yard completion and a first down.
Stewart rushed 13 yards to the 1, then added the score on the next play.
