Halftime blog: Panthers 9, Redskins 6
The Panthers cashed in on a Redskins fumble near the end of the half to take a 9-6 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Olindo Mare's third field goal of the half – a 45-yarder – gave the Panthers the lead with 2 seconds left. The kick came four plays after James Anderson recovered a fumble by Redskins receiver Jabar Gaffney at the Panthers' 34-yard line with 21 seconds left in the half.
The Panthers' red-zone problems continued earlier in the second quarter.
On first-and-10 at the Redskins' 11, DeAngelo Williams was stopped for no gain. On second down, the Redskins came with a blitz and linebacker Brian Orakpo drilled Cam Newton from the blindside for a 7-yard loss.
A short completion to Legedu Naanee brought on the field goal team, which picked up penalties on successive plays to turn a 30-yard attempt by Olindo Mare into a 45-yarder.
Mare made three kicks in the sequence, including the last one, to give the Panthers a 6-3 lead with 5:02 remaining in the half.
But Graham Gano's second field goal of the quarter made it 6-6 with 1:02 left. Gano hit from 31 and 49 yards.
The Panthers were penalized nine times for 70 yards. The team record for most penalties in a game is 16, set in a 12-9 overtime win over Tampa Bay on Sept. 14, 2003.
