Panthers trying new kick returner

Ron Rivera continues to make changes to the Panthers' struggling special teams.

The first-year coach said today Jordan Pugh or rookie Kealoha Pilares would return kicks Sunday against the Saints in place of Mike Goodson.

Goodson missed a practice this week while ill. But the Panthers used Pugh last week against Chicago after Goodson mishandled a second-half kickoff.

Rivera said he would make a decision on the returner during Saturday's walkthrough, but it sounds like he could be leaning toward Pilares, the wideout from Hawaii who was bothered by a high ankle sprain last month.

“I am eager to see Kealoha. The unfortunate thing for him is he'd made a lot of progress and was doing real well until he twisted the ankle pretty good. But now that we have him going, kind of excited to watch him,” Rivera said.

“He's got a nice, quick burst, a good first step, and he does have some good top-end speed. So hopefully if we can give him an opportunity I think he might be able to do something for us.”

Goodson is 20th in the NFL in kickoff returns with a 22.4-yard average and a long of 31 yards. Pugh averaged 25.5 yards on two returns against the Bears.

In injury news …

Every player on the Panthers' injury report is listed as probable for Sunday's game: CB Chris Gamble (head), TE Jeremy Shockey (head), right guard Geoff Hangartner (back), right tackle Jeff Otah (back) and Goodson.

Rivera said he expects all of them to play.

Wow! Finally a healthy lineup! Gonna be nice to actually see all our starters out there for once. This must be the first time in 2-3 years.

Go get a W!

Not a healthy lineup! When Beason & Davis returns next year then we can say we gave a healthy lineup!

Im guessing we weren't smart enough to see your post the first 5 times, You'll see! By the way, it's good to see a coach shake things up for once.

I think Otah makes the injury list for broken finger nails!

There is no such thing as a 100% totally healthy lineup in the nfl.

4 FG's makes 12 all the same....just saying....

as for the KR....i'm all for pilares, i'd like to hear edwards getting a look, even if goodson ends up returning kicks again, hopefully he's more motivated.

Hopefully, we'll only have one kick off return the whole game. I predict Brees' mole will wake from its slumber and remove itself from his cheek and devour his head. Cam Newton breaks Marino's single season passing record in the first half. Beason plays on crutches and records 12 sacks.

Panthers win 142-0.
