Panthers work rookies during bye week

The Panthers' rookies -- at least those who haven't played much -- took a bunch of reps Tuesday during the first of two practices scheduled during the team's bye week.

Cornerback Brandon Hogan, the team's fourth-round pick, got some work with the first-team defense, as well as the return teams. Hogan started the year on the physically unable to perform list when he was slow to recover from offseason ACL surgery.

Hogan said he still wasn't sure whether he would be activated next week. The Panthers must put him on the active roster by Nov. 9 or place him on injured reserve.

Several veterans were given the day off, including offenisve linemen Jordan Gross and Travelle Wharton, receiver Legedu Naanee (who is nursing an ankle injury), linebacker James Anderson and defensive end Antwan Applewhite (who has a thigh bruise).

Tight end Jeremy Shockey and receiver Steve Smith took limited reps.

Ron Rivera also wanted to give a break to rookie defensive tackles Sione Fua and Terrell McClain, the third-round picks who have started all season. Rivera said Fua hadn't missed a practice rep before Tuesday.

"He's taken a lot and he's probably one of the guys you notice that looks like he's a little heavy-legged, a little lethargic," Rivera said. "This week could be really good for a kid like him to rebound."

We need Fua's heavy legs to start moving into the gap and tackling running backs.

I have been beyond concerned about fua and after 8 weeks it doesn't look good. My concerns started in the Miami Preseason game when I saw Reggie Bush pull him for 2+ yards before he could get him down.

Rookie, Technique etc. I don't think any is going to make a difference. He looks like a big man that does not have the raw power you think he would. hope I am wrong!

Newtons agent in talks with winless Miami owner Ross for a 5 year 100 million deal since according to NFL insider sources Newton and Pappy want OUT of the Carolina market in a bad way and believe his talents are far superior wanting a bigger jazzier resort coastal city and out of plain jane. Miami boasts 7 million metro Dade and the playground for the rich and famous. Plenty of shisters so it would be a good fit.

Gonna be hilarious when Newton stabs the local media and his fans and hauls azz to South Florida. JR has said there is no way in hell he will pay this loser more money.

Face reality. Scam the Ham gives a rats azz about CP or the media or its fans and thinks he is way too good for the joint. Its the typical arrogant boss Atlanta attitude.

It could be a Newton-Smith double deal to Miami. If JR is wise he will bargain for Luck and trade the oversized loser since it appears Miami will get the #1 pick. Good riddence since most fans secretly ready to get rid of the terrible stench over BOA and desperately want Luck as their QB.

why is mike goodson not playing special teams..he is our best kt and pt..what did he do??

Aside from the better TE's and offensive scheme ,i am having my doubt's about Rivera ,because this team still commit's penalty's by the dozen and can't stop the run...Even more disturbing the last draft was a total bust with Cam being the only NFL player ,and he keep's turning the ball over as much as he scores TD's..This team other than faces is as bad as last year's team...Just not coached well ,and drafting WORSE!..Please no more Big east player's!

I agree with the goodson comment. I don't remember him doing anything wrong and certainly he is better than who we are using now.

Yo Dude, calling yourself "Insider" now. You still can't help but make irrelevant comments. Like I have said before, let us adults discuss football and leave your imaginings to the sandbox where they belong. Oh, by the way, "Rae Carruth" is in jail for a reason. He needs to stay there.

To the real Panthers and/or Football fans on these posts. Just ignore the ignorant idiotic statements... Acknowledging them gives them credence and power.

Rookie "Head" Coach; Rookie QB... Two things that are undeniable is that 1)We are scoring more points and 2) Cam does not play on Defense.

He has to decrease the number of turnovers he commits, but he still finds ways to march us down field to put up 20+ pts.

Insider rookie contracts cant be redone till 3rd year of deal with new cba. Shows how much you know huh.

Goodson should be doing kick returns as he is more explosive. Cam is already dedicated to this team and I hope he stays here for his whole career. if so, i see some big things in the future.

I will take Goodson fumbling over Pilares anyday! I mean come on. A decent position coach can teach him how to hold the ball.

Hey, at least Goodson would be fumbling out near the 40 instead of Pilares back at the 15.
