First quarter blog: Panthers 7, Falcons 7
The Panthers and Falcons traded short touchdown passes in the opening quarter Sunday as the NFC South rivals entered the second quarter tied at 7.
The Falcons scored on their second possession on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Matt Ryan to Roddy White, who had a big series.
White, who got behind Captain Munnerlyn in the end zone on the score, caught four passes for 32 yards on the drive. Two of the receptions converted third downs.
But the Panthers responded on their next drive by marching 74 yards on nine plays before Cam Newton found tight end Jeremy Shockey for a 6-yard touchdown pass with three seconds remaining in the quarter.
Newton completed passes to four different receivers on the drive, which consumed 5 minutes, 26 seconds. Steve Smith made a juggling, 18-yard catch that left the veteran 6 yards shy of 10,000 for his career.
