First quarter blog: Panthers 7, Texans 0
The Panthers led 7-0 and were driving at the end of the first quarter Sunday against the Texans.
The Panthers got on the scoreboard early following a fumble by Houston running back Arian Foster on the second play from scrimmage.
Linebackers Jordan Senn and James Anderson hit Foster after a short gain, jarring the ball loose. Anderson recovered at the Texans' 26-yard line.
Four plays later, Cam Newton hit Steve Smith down the right sideline for a 26-yard touchdown pass, giving the Panthers a 7-0 lead with 12:02 left. Smith beat cornerback Johnathan Joseph on the play.
The Panthers' defense did a good job getting off the field on the Texans' next two possessions, holding on third-down completions that came up short of the first-down marker.
Neil Rackers tried a 49-yard field goal with 2:12 left in the first quarter, but pushed it right by a wide margin and the Panthers retained their 7-0 lead.
Jordan Gross was back at left tackle for the Panthers after missing last week's loss to Atlanta with a sprained ankle. Gross did not practice last week, and was listed as questionable for the game.
