Panthers trick play: Life imitates 'art'
After fullback Richie Brockel scored a 7-yard touchdown run on a Fumble-rooskie in the first half of a 28-13 win at Houston on Sunday, his Panthers teammates wondered what to call the play.
Among the suggestions: 'The Chud-a-rooskie,' in honor of offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski, and 'the Mauler,' the nickname rookie QB Cam Newton gave to Brockel in training camp.
They settled on the Annexation of Puerto Rico, a trick play run in the 1994 comedy, “Little Giants” about a peewee football team.
Ron Rivera said Brockel's play was similar to that used in the movie, although was not necessarily inspired by the film.
“Just so you know, the unofficial name – I don't know if you guys have ever seen the “Little Giants” – it's called the Annexation of Puerto Rico. I've seen the movie a hundred times with my kids. They're grown up now,” Rivera said. “So last night we were talking about and they called it everything from the Chud-a-rooskie to the Mauler to what have you. Somebody said, 'well, it's from the 'Little Giants.''”
It's the second trick play in the past three weeks that has worked for the Panthers. In a win at Tampa Bay on Dec. 4, Newton caught a long pass from receiver Legedu Naanee to set up a touchdown.
Receiver Brandon LaFell was skeptical when Chudzinski put the Annexation in during Friday's walkthrough.
“When we put it in, I never thought in a million years that that play was going to work, let alone get a touchdown,” LaFell said.

Well if they are in the mood to be inspired from movies, why not bring in Kathy Ireland to kick field goals, they are already open to the idea of bringing new kickers.

They should use that play that the guy scored with during the Last Boy Scout.

The Panthers won 28-13, not 21-0.
