Steve Smith on Vinny, Jake and Cam

Yes, Steve Smith said this week that Cam Newton is the third-best quarterback he's played with, behind Jake Delhomme and Vinny Testaverde.

No, Smith was not dissing Newton, the No. 1 overall pick whose arrival in Charlotte has helped rejuvenate Smith's career.

Smith was merely giving props to guys who had long, productive careers. (Delhomme's was extended this week when he signed with the injury-riddled Texans.)

Cam, he's been in the league for about 15 minutes," Smith said on this week's "Dave Dameshek Football Program," which airs on NFL.com. "I think that's one of the things that the media does. They jump on a train too quick.

But Jake played for a number of years, for various teams for various reasons, but at the end of the day, he played a long time because he made plays.”

Smith said he learned a lot about route-running from Testaverde, who played seven games for the Panthers in 2007 after Delhomme was injured.

But Smith told the Observer he thinks Newton – on pace to break Peyton Manning's rookie passing record – will surpass Delhomme and Testaverde before his career is through.

“Yes, I believe that. I'm very confident in it,” Smith said. “But I can't take away from the guys that I have many years of playing with and some guys that had 16 years (of experience).”

Actually, Vinny had 20 years of experience. But Smith's point is still valid.

Gotta love Smitty. He's not doing anything other than stating facts. Jake and he made a lot of plays together, and Testaverde was around the NFL a long time. Hopefully Cam will be the greatest of them all, but he's not there yet.

Another self serving statement from Le Petit Thug. Of course he won't give Newton any compliments as that would take even more of the limelight away from his fading football career. Go get a few more late game thug penalties already Little Smith.

Little butt hurt arent we Haywood... hmmmm..

SMitty stated the facts. Cam's years are ahead of him and if this year was any proof of what he can do, watchout in the future.
Thanks to Jake and Vinny!!

Oh Haywood, just looking for things to dump on Smitty for, aren't you? He didn't say ANYTHING about himself, he was talking about the QBs... and he was absolutely right!

As for Ace Juniper... OK, what ABOUT Clausen?

where does smitty rank clausen on this list of qb's he's played with?

I think smitty made good comments, it is ok if he doesn't crown cam king right away haywood......motivates him to get even better....he says he thinks he will be.

Where's St. Pierre on this list!?

Smith probably thinks Cam has been getting enough praise for someone who hasn't done all that much yet. He probably also thinks Cam's head is big enogh and that there's no need for him to inflate it even more.

Classy comments from Steve. No need to heap more praise on Cam, and nice to see him still talk highly of Jake and Vinny.

Don't forget about Dameyune Craig!!!

Who the hell gives a flying fuck? So when the media idiots have no news they have to use their pea sized brain to write stupidity like that?
What is this some kind of popularity contest?
Get real. Newton the alltime biggest ever scammer dumb crook will be lucky to play one season maybe two. He is not mentally capable of lasting a year or two in spite of the local media mice who cant keep him off the tube.

The whole franchise is a joke run by a bankrupt newspaper who tries to dictate everything owned by a bankrupt media company. Laughable.

Haywood and auburn alumni--do you find it odd that a person would seek out an article about Cam Newton or Steve Smith and read the entire thing, just so that he can write a long, awkwardly worded negative comment? Does that sound weird or stalker-ish to you? Just curious.

I can't BE-LIEVE Smitty would leave ME out! I HAVE to be #4 then.

Posted by: David Carr | Dec 1, 2011 7:46:54 PM

I think Matt Moore was likely fourth... Too bad the dude got hurt TWICE last year. He might actually make it in Miami - been much better that Chad!

Posted by: Dirt | Dec 1, 2011 7:46:57 PM

Matt Moore and Buerlien were also better than Newton.

What about these other "quality" QB's the team was supposed to be able to win with - Brett Basanez, Rodney Peete, David Carr, Hunter Caldwell, Stefan LeFors, Keith Null and the always impressive Chris Weinke. Thanks for finding great talent Marty.

The rigged union clearly allowed Scam the Ham to pass for big yards plus run and score to the retard goofy grin kindergarten acts. He clearly has a dose of Downs Syndrone and should have been in the Special Olympics.
This is proven by his pathetic preseason 0-3 with only 300 yards YET magically the first 2 regular season games he is given over 400 yards each that has dwindled weekly. The light pussified wimp soft baby tackles are laughable. No other QB has ever got off that light. Totally rigged.

Idiots dont understand the ratpack union rigs it all and calls the shots just like it extorted billions more off the good owners in the strike. The masses are hammered with trillions in higher prices in the end.

Posted by: panthernation | Dec 2, 2011 8:37:22 AM

Hate to tell the dumber than hell ignoramous that the original who scored more points and left 8th highest point scorer in the NFL was 15 year vet Kasay who is STILL winning games for NO. Smith aint even in the running.
Kasay's demise was Richardsons fault.

PUSSYCATS = WORST FRANCHISE IN THE HISTORY OF THE NFL.
