Cam Newton Pro Bowl performance: Ugh

Cam Newton won't lose the Rookie of the Year Award based on his Pro Bowl performance in the AFC's 59-41 win, but he didn't win over any of his critics, either.

Playing the entire second half Sunday in relief of Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees, Newton completed just 9-of-27 passes for 186 yards, with three interceptions -- including one that was returned for a touchdown.

Newton was plagued by overthrows -- a problem area even as he re-wrote the rookie passing records after the Panthers drafted him No. 1 overall last year.

Newton often failed to set his feet Sunday and saw the ball sail on him. He did throw two touchdowns -- to teammate Steve Smith and Arizona's Larry Fitzgerald -- in the highest-scoring Pro Bowl in history.

The good news for Newton: He will leave Honolulu in good health. Avoiding injury is something worth celebrating -- Brees hurt his elbow in the Pro Bowl five years ago.

It appeared the AFC defense turned up the intensity when Newton was in the game -- perhaps eyeing the extra $25,000 that went to the winners. Denver Broncos rookie Von Miller twice sacked Newton, who was knocked down a couple of other times.

You'll recall that Newton struggled in the preseason, completing 42.4 percent of his passes in four exhibitions. The Pro Bowl sort of had that seem look and feel for the former Auburn star.

But Newton turned it up in the games that counted. And isn't that what you'd rather have from your franchise quarterback?

Was a bit rough, but when he gets coach and repetition all week and a game plan that suits his skills, he shines. Has a ways to go to just be a "normal" QB. Because he is not. And thank God for that.

Needs to work on his foot work in the off season

Ugly to watch, but the game was just for fun. Im sure Cam will use this performance to motivate him during his off-season training.

Posted by: CamFan | Jan 30, 2012 12:13:05 AM

It was only ugly to watch because Cam was the scapegoat in the 4th quarter than the AFC "D" turned up their juices. Even if Brees or Rodgers were in there, they wouldn't have fared much better. It was pretty clear that the NFC offensive line and WRs were still playing "for fun," while the AFC "D" seemed to have a chip on their shoulder.

Cam can run away against ANY team in the NFL, but there is no running away from the SINGLE BEST player in every team of the NFL. If you'd put either the NFC or AFC squad against NYG or PATs in the Superbowl, the score would be 120-7 easily!

Pay no minds to this game...if you think Cam has regressed because of one stupid Pro Bowl game, then you clearly don't know jack about football. If anything, this beating did him GOOD...it taught him that to BE THE BEST, you have to continue working harder and PROVE it. I think Cam will come into next season in even better form than he has this season. Don't be surprised if he lights up the stat sheet again next season!

Can't WAIT!

The pass to Smitty was worth it all. Time to get ready for next season, in our new gear! Everybody, tax return = a brand new Cam jersey by Nike!

love watching football with lineman just standing around! next year just have a 7 on 7 drill instead of a game! what a garbage event!

He shows up when the game counts. Look at the preseason and this game. Ugly, but when it matter he is lights out. Game time player. I am the biggest fan of Cam Newton in the world, he is a G and no one can stop him. Sick of haters, he is the best when it counts. F all your haters. Cam fan from the start.

Are you all serious??? really??

cam newton owes every member on the afc team 25k, the difference in pay if they had won. he struts out there laughing, joking around, taking nothing serious, he looked like a guy that hadn't thrown a ball in over a month. guy was a joke out there.

I LOVED THE PERFECT ON THE MONEY BOMB TO SMITH! IT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE WHOLE DEAL...AS FAR AS THE INT'S GOES...THE DEFENSE STARTING PLAYING AT ABOUT 80% WHEN THE 3RD QTR STARTED AND THE OFFENSE STAYED AT ABOUT 60%.

Cam was with a bunch who he was unfamiliar with and face it....MOST of the NFC guys, all the Packers and Aints players have only been out of fulltime football for a few weeks or less...Newton has not played in forever. I did not expect more than he did and I loved seeing the timing with Smith was perfect!

Uh, "EDDIE"
You make NO SENSE...Why would Cam owe every member of the AFC team $25k? Cam is on the NFC squad.

PS You must be some sad ole dallas fan all mad about Tony not making the PB and trying to hate on Cam....Yeah, Tony, Dez Bryant and felix jones hooked up all day! ON TONY'S HEART SHAPED SOFA!!! cause they sure were not playing in the probowl!

By the way I did see the Cowboys wonderful outside linebacker out there giving it the old 3/4's effort...He looked ridiculous! LIKE YOU!

The intensity between the NFC and AFC was night and day after half time. They were reporting that the AFC was mad at the NFC for all the onside kicks and fake field goals so the AFC turned it up after the half while the NFC was still in 7 on 7 mode. Brees and Rodgers had all day to throw but the NFC oline gave Cam plenty of lookout blocks in the 2nd half. Cam had some bad throws don't get me wrong there but there were plenty of times where the rest of the NFC offense was just going through the motions and not helping Cam.

Cchsol... Right on. Cam was off but had no blocking.

I don't know if you noticed, but it is the pro bowl not the super bowl the players are just out there to have fun and get it over with so they can have a vacation the week after.

Scam SUXXXXXXXXX you are a genius. Really showing that CMS education. Now get to work so I can get a Bacon Egg and Cheese.

Just like I said, publicity and PR. Cam Newton was the talk of the week at the Pro Bowl. This only helps promote the event.
Yet, Matthew Stafford was the one who deserved to play in the game, and it certainly showed. The game of stars proved to be way above Cam's head at this time...and Cam made sure the ball was over everyone else's head.
I am a monster Panthers fan, but I am also a realist. I am thrilled Cam got a chance to obtain more experience and exposure in this elite situation, yet he was NOT better than Matthew Stafford in 2011.
Just understand that the Honeymoon is over for Cam Newton.

Overthrows up the middle was his bugaboo this season and his Pro Bowl performance sure didn't show me he's learned anything from it. I know it was a half speed exhibition but the d wasn't playing all out either. Young Cam needs work.

And now a comment from someone outside of Carolina-The guy is terrible-to play this way in the Pro Bowl is an embarrasment and he got exposed for what he is-Another running quarterback-and come on tuck your shirt in-only think missing was his helmet turned sideways and his pants hangin off his butt

Anyone who took the Pro Bowl seriously needs to get a life. The results have no influence on one's career or team. Just because B. Marshal was the MVP won't help the Dolphins play any better this season. Does anyone remember who the MVP was last year? There is a lot of anger on this Blog.
Too bad hate is easily spewed

Where's all the homers that were saying Newton was a beast and deserved to be in the pro bowl? The guy was complete garbage. Matthew Stafford would have played so much better.

Posted by: LOL | Jan 30, 2012 8:14:47 AM

As Ihave been saying all year, CAM IS NOT THE ANSWER!!! Chud is responsible for the turnaround. Cam is just an oversized running back who has some frisbee catching dogs he gets to throw to.

Posted by: What goes here? | Jan 30, 2012 8:33:22 AM

Cam-where did you get that jersey? It looked like a mini-dress! Probably a prelude to the girly like performance that followed!
PS-still love ya anyway.

Bad footwork and poor machanics are major issues that Cameron needs to badly work on this offseason. He embarrassed himself, the organization, and the fans by that horrible performance in his first nationally televised professional game.

Posted by: PantherJon | Jan 30, 2012 8:49:24 AM

When Cam is off he is really off! Some of those throws were embarassing.

At the same time, I can't ever recall seeing a defensive attack like that in a probowl game before. He didn't have much time at all.

One good thing about this, the jersey hanging out will not catch on. That looked stupid.
