Report: Charlotte native Steve Wilks to coach Panthers DBs

StevewilksoddsizeforblogThe Carolina Panthers appear to have found their new secondary coach – and it's someone familiar both with Charlotte and Panthers coach Ron Rivera.

San Diego Chargers defensive backs coach Steve Wilks has accepted the same position with the Panthers, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported Saturday. A Panthers spokesman said he could not confirm the hire.

Wilks, who grew up in Charlotte, played at Appalachian State and for the Charlotte Rage in the Arena Football League in 1993. He worked with Rivera in Chicago and San Diego, where he had the title of assistant head coach on Norv Turner's staff.

San Diego ranked 13th among 32 teams in pass defense in 2011. Wilks replaces Ron Meeks, who was let go following three seasons with the Panthers.

Very nice hire!

He's going to need another corner and a safety.

We're becoming the Carolina Chargers haha

Now...if Morris Claiborne falls to our guys in the first round, grab him to give this new coach a good man to work with.

Mmm...nice looking guy. I might actually buy some game tickets now...lol!

@jones...LOL! I was thinking the samething! Come on Carolina Chargers...err. Panthers!

I would like to have Claiborne but if we can get Kirkpatrick to help our secondary that would be good for me. Then maybe grab Hightower from Bama in the 2nd round if he is still there, dont think he will be taken in the first but dont know if the teams ahead of us will grab him in the second.

We have two corners playing safety! Have Thomas Davis play strong safety! Hurney drafted corners and they play safety and he drafts a safety and he plays linebacker! WTF!

Ron Meeks was good. How much better can Steve Wilks be. Time will tell.

Par404 - Wilks is the best Secondary Coach in the NFL!

I called this hire on yesterday. Read above.

Sherrod Martin is lazy crap. Trade down and get another 2nd round or first round pick, draft Mark Barron. Darius Butler has tools to be a shutdown corner, just needs to work. Maybe pick up a second tier FA CB. Godfrey is good in zone and an excellent tackler, could not be a CB, not fast enough.

Posted by: Cam Newton | Jan 14, 2012 10:57:56 PM

by "another 2nd round or first round pick" I meant "2nd round or THIRD round"

Posted by: Cam Newton | Jan 14, 2012 10:58:35 PM

We'll definitely need a new corner. Munnerlyn is okay, and I'm sure will be a solid nickel corner, but I don't feel very confident when other teams throw to one of their starting receivers being covered by him.

Not a bad idea to move Thomas Davis to SS if the team plans to retain him after his 3rd ACL tear. I think his days as LB are over, and not only that, moving him to SS will not take as much toll on him as playing LB, prolonging his ability to play for a season. Can you imagine him laying a nasty hit for any WR trying to catch a pass in the middle of the field? I think he can make a very good SS, and the Panthers draft a good LB to fill his former position along with a decent CB!

Dre Kirkpatrick. Morris claiborne won't be available

Posted by: Rhyne | Jan 15, 2012 8:44:00 AM

Excellent hire...now if we can only get Dre Kirkpatrick and Mark Barron (2 guys at least 6'2' with strength and speed)) our secondary and our special teams defense will really improve.

good hire but we don't need a coach. We need to get some players. I would keep Gamble and shit-can the whole bunch. Charles Godfrey hands down is the worst player in the NFL. He can't tackle and is too scrawny to bring down people by himself. Play after play the running backs or WR's go right by him. CUT THE CLOWN!!!

Posted by: Pantherman | Jan 15, 2012 10:24:52 AM

Does Rivera hire anybody that he doesn't know? Am I suppose to believe only Rivera over his career had exposure to the greatest coaches. Get out of your box Ron, if you can....

There you go again JoeVeryUnCool, yapping while not knowing anything.

I like the Observer Blogs :), they havent banned me. lol. Good hire by the Panthers. BTW, Ive seen far worse comments than ones that got me banned from writing on Observer articles. Its a shame that when you complain about how poorly an article is written you get banned, but you make racist, sexist comments you dont

They tried Thomas Davis at safety when he first joined the Panthers, but it didn't work out and TD was looking like a bust. But the moved him to OLB in his third year and he excelled. OLB was his more natural position in college before UGA experimented with him at SS.

Posted by: PanthersD | Jan 15, 2012 1:04:50 PM

Sounds like a solid hire.

But will the new head coach keep him?

Posted by: George Hanson | Jan 15, 2012 5:55:19 PM

Well that was a good change, but Sean McDermott, is the Defenses biggest PROBLEM. They need a new Defensive Coordinator!!! Next year will be the same as this year. Why Carolina WHY!!! Make the BIG changes to become Playoff contenders. Stop being the little fish in the big pond/NFL. Make some real waves, cut Sean and get a real D.C.

Are you sure you pay attention to football
if you did you would know the only reason godfrey looked like he struggled was because he was always catching up after the corner had been beat. as for the tackling. no many people knew this until late in the season. but he along with half the other NFL players play hurt. and guess what when its a shoulder issue. then yeah tackling is going to be bad. should he not have been in . thats a case in question but when he's your best option. then yeah put him in

Posted by: PANTHERSFAN4LIFE | Jan 16, 2012 9:31:30 AM

Actually you should of put "Tebow can't change his game"! Newton is a much better QB than Tebow. Anytime your teammates don't give you an endorsement for next year then that says a lot. Tebow's teammates left him high and dry as far as being the starting QB on the Broncos for next year. Do Bronco's players believe in Tebow?
